Why
do
Americans
struggle
with
watching
their
weight,while
the
French,who
consume
rich
food,continue
to
stay
thin?Now
a
research
by
Cornell
University
suggests
how
life
style
and
decisions
about
eating
may
affect
weight.Researchers
conclude
that
the
French
tend
to
stop
eating
when
they
feel
full.However,Americans
tend
to
stop
when
their
plate
is
empty
or
their
favorite
TV
show
is
over.
According
to
Dr.Joseph
Mercola,a
health
expert,the
French
see
eating
as
an
important
part
of
their
life
style.They
enjoy
food
and
therefore
spend
a
fairly
long
time
at
the
table,while
Americans
see
eating
as
something
to
be
squeezed
between
the
other
daily
activities.Mercola
believes
Americans
lose
the
ability
to
sense
when
they
are
actually
full.So
they
keep
eating
long
after
the
French
would
have
stopped.In
addition,he
points
out
that
Americans
drive
to
huge
supermarkets
to
buy
canned
and
frozen
foods
for
the
week.The
French,instead,tend
to
shop
daily,walking
to
small
shops
and
farmers’
markets
where
they
have
a
choice
of
fresh
fruits,vegetables,and
eggs
as
well
as
high-quality
meats
for
each
meal.
After
a
visit
to
the
United
States,Mireille
Guiliano,author
of
French
Women
Don’t
Get
Fat,decided
to
write
about
the
importance
of
knowing
when
to
stop
rather
than
suggesting
how
to
avoid
food.Today
she
continues
to
stay
slim
and
rarely
goes
to
the
gym.
In
spite
of
all
these
difference,evidence
shows
that
recent
life
style
changes
may
be
affecting
French
eating
habits.Today
the
rate
of
obesity—or
extreme
overweight—among
adults
is
only
6%.However,as
American
fast
food
gains
acceptance
and
the
young
reject
older
traditions,the
obesity
rate
among
French
children
has
reached
17%—and
is
growing.
1.In
what
way
are
the
French
difference
from
Americans
according
to
Dr.Joseph
Mercola?
A.They
go

frequently.
B.They
squeeze
eating
between
the
other
daily
activities.
C.They
regard
eating
as
a

their

style.
D.They
usually
eat
too
much
canned
and
frozen
food.

In
1991.Keith
White
was
at
the
centre
of
a
14-vehicle
pile-up
when
a
truck
crossed
the
central
reservation
and
hit
the
van
in
which
he
was
a
passenger.
White
survived,
but
his
left
arm
was crushed
beyond
repair,
and
he
lost
his
memory
for
two
years.
His
pilot
license
was
removed
and
he
could
no
longer
follow
his
passion
for
diving.But
he
had
been
sailing
since
he
was
16.
and
so,
in
2004,
he
decided
to
buy
a
boat,
fitting
it
out
so
he
could
sail
it
single-handedly.“I
didn't
know
at
that
point
if
I
could
sail
with
one
hand."he
says."But
at
the
back
of
my
mind
I
had
always
thought
I
could
do
anything
if
I
put
my
mind
to
it.”
Within
a
year,White
had
taken
on
the
challenge
of
being
the
first
one-armed
sailor
to
circumnavigate
(环航)
the
British
Isles.
Then
he
crossed
the
Atlantic
alone
in
2008.Last
year
he
became
the
first
sailor
with
a
disability
to
circumnavigate
the
globe.
Sailing
single-handed
for
weeks
requires
mental,as
well
as
physical,strength,especially
when
you
are
alone.
So
how
does
he
do
it?
It's
a
question
that
makes
the
yachtsman
(帆船运动员)
laugh."When
you
have
seven
children
it’s
lovely
to
have
a
little
time
on
your
own!
It's
awesome,”
he
jokes."I
do
a
log
every
hour,
and
my
diary,
and
I
read
a
few
books.
I
have
very
little
sleep.”"I'm
a
sociable
person:
I
do
like
lots
of
people
around.
Answering
emails
and
chatting
over
Facebook
can
help
stop
any
loneliness,"
he
adds.
When
White
made
his
first
Atlantic
crossing,
he
was
disappointed
to
have
his
peace
and
quiet
broken
by
his
arrival
on
land.
But,
he
says,
he
threw
himself
into
meeting
new
people.
In
between
adventures,
he
likes
sailing
with
people
who
haven't
tried
it
before
or
get
involved
in
yacht
races
with
friends.
Perhaps
the
main
reason
for
his
success
in
adjusting
to
life
after
a
big
adventure,
he
says,is
that
he
always
has
an
idea
for
a
new
one
in
his
back
pocket."It
keeps
me
ticking
over—there's
always
something
new
to
do.
I
just
like
challenges
and
one
leads
to
another.”
28.
Why
couldn't
White
continue
his
passion
for

his
left
arm.

His
license
was
due.

He

a
new

was

time
at
sea?

awake.

visiting
old
friends.
C.
By
keeping
himself
busy.
D.
By
attending

30.
What
mainly
leads
to
White’s
successful
adjustment

after
a
big
adventure?

Socializing
with
new
people
.B.Scheduling
new
adventure
C.
Coaching

31.
Which
of
the

D
Have
you
ever
spent
an
afternoon
in
the
backyard,
maybe
grilling
or
enjoying
a
basketball
game,
when
suddenly
you
notice
that
everything
goes
quiet?
There
is
an
old
phrase
“calm
before
the
storm”,
often
used
in
a
situation
—
a
quiet
period
just
before
a
great
activity
or
excitement.
According
to
our
own
experience,
we
know
there
is
actually
calm
before
the
storm.
But
what
causes
this
calm?
And
is
it
always
calm
before
the
storm?
A
period
of
calm
happens
in
a
particular
kind
of
storm,
the
simplest
kind
of
storm
—
a
single-cell
thunderstorm.
In
this
type
of
thunderstorm,
there
is
usually
only
one
main
stream
of
current,
which
is
warm,
damp
air
and
drawn
from
places
near
the
ground.
Storms
need
warm
and
damp
air
as
fuel,
so
they
typically
draw
that
air
in
from
surrounding
environment.
Storms
can
draw
in
the
air
that
fit
their
need
from
all
directions
—
even
from
the
direction
in
which
the
storm
is
traveling.
As
the
warm,
damp
air
is
pulled
into
a
storm
system,
it
leaves
a
low-pressure
vacuum(真空)
coming
after.
The
rising
air
meets
the
cold
dry
air
that
has
already
existed
in
the
storm
clouds,
thus
the
temperature
of
the
warm,
damp
air
drops,
and
the
water
vapor
in
it
changes
into
tiny
drops
that
are
a
precondition
of
rain.
These
drops
accumulate
and
build
on
larger
particles(颗粒)
like
dust,
until
they
grow
large
enough
to
form
raindrops.
This
warm,
damp
air
keeps
moving
upwards,
but
it
becomes
cooler
and
drier
during
its
trip
through
cloud.
When
it
reaches
the
top
of
the
cloud,
the
air
is
squeezed
out
at
the
top.
This
air
is
sent
rolling
out
over
the
big
thunderclouds.
From
there,
the
air
goes
down.
Warm
and
dry
air
is
relatively
stable,
and
once
it
covers
a
region,
that
air,
in
turn,
causes
the
calm
before
a
storm.
Most
thunderstorms,
though,
don't
start
with
calm.
That's
because
most
are
actually
groups
of
storms
with
complex
wind
patterns.
There's
so
much
air
moving
up
and
down
storm
groups
that
the
calm
before
the
storm
never
happens.
Instead,
before
the
storm,
it
might
be
really
windy!
32.Which

C.cold

In

how
can
you

Many
researchers
view
emotion
regulation
as
the
ability
to

or
reduce
your
emotions
as

define
it
as
a
set
of
skills
that
help
keep

healthy
and
functioning.We
can
learn
to
adjust
what
emotion
we
have,
how
intense
it
is,when
we

it,and
how
we
react
to
it.

activated.
Goals
are
highly
individual.
They've
what
we
picture
in
our
heads.
Your
goals
can
be
activated
by
your
environment.
You
may
regulate
your
emotions
to
influence
a
change
in
someone
else,38
For
instance,when
your
boss
treats
you
poorly
at
work,you
act
as
ifit
doesn't
bother
you
because
you
're
hoping
for
a
job
promotion.
Mindfulness
is
the
practice
of
being
present
in
the
moment.Mindful
people
learn
to
be
aware
of
the
breaths
they
take,
the
tension
in
their
muscles,and
even
their
pulse
rates.They
can
objectively
observe
themselves
in
difficult
moments,confident
that
even
these
times
will
pass.39
In
and
of
themselves,
emotions
are
not
good
or
bad,
though
they
may
be
scary,
especially
when
they're
intense.40
But
the
more
you
do
it,
the
more
natural
it
becomes.Mindfulness
skills
can
help
with
this
too.
A.Learning
how
to
accept
your
emotions
takes
practice.
B.
Being
mindful
can
help
you
to
deal
with
your
emotions.
C.
There
is
no
one
agreed-upon
definition
of
emotion
regulation.
D.Emotion
regulation
goals
vary
strongly
from
situation
to
situation.
E.
For
some
people,though,
emotion
regulation
is
much
more
difficult.
F.
Emotion
regulation
refers
to
the
ability
to
control
one's
own
emotions.
G.
Sometimes
you
may
regulate
your
emotions
to
achieve
another
end
goal.
