A
Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers (青少年). But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut.” Joanns noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (蜷伏)with me on the sofa and talk ,” said Mark . “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something, Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact , parents are first on the list .” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers . “This completely changes during the teen years.” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their
children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their
children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them .

Mike Ingram had been a guard on the Ohio State football team in the late 1950s. I believe he may have been captain in his senior year. He is a tough-looking guy, a hero in Columbus, a brave fighter in a red-and-gray uniform.
One holiday season Jack and I had been at the F & R Lazarus department store downtown, and we saw, carrying a tall pile of boxes, someone who clearly was working in the Lazarus stockroom (仓库). It was Mike Ingram, post-Ohio State football player.
We stared—how could we help it And Mike Ingram stopped in his track, looked right back at us, and said, with bite in his tone: “ Yeah, it’s me.” Meaning: Go ahead and stare if you must.
Couldn’t really blame him. There was nothing wrong with what he was doing--- he was earning some money in the stockroom. But he was out in the world now, he wasn’t where he had been when everything was bathed in sunlight; he was in Ohio Stadium, hearing the supporting shouts from 78,000 people who loved him and his teammates. He had moved past that first of life’s roles, as everyone does. It was his misfortune to have been famous very early; there must have been dozens and dozens of men in their twenties working in the Lazarus stockroom, but Mike Ingram was the one sure to attract curious passers, because he was no longer who he was supposed to be.

Even though she’s just 5 years old, Cindy Smart speaks five languages. She’s a good reader. She can tell time and do simple math, including multiplication and division. Cindy looks like an average doll, with long, blond hair, baby-blue eyes, and a button nose.
But loaded with some devices, Cindy is the first doll that can see, think, and do as she’s told. The eagle-eyed Cindy follows in the path of other breakthrough toys like Sony’s barking Robot
Aibo, which was the first to popularize voice command in the late 1990s. Cindy takes Aibo’s innovations(创新) one step beyond: she not only follows instructions but also recognizes shapes, colors and words, and remembers. The effect is a doll that appears to be learning.
The toy company which produced Cindy Smart spent a decade trying to see how much human nature it could breathe into an inanimate(无生命的) object. Its engineers began creating minibots that sense light, sounds, and pressure. However, without the sense of sight, their toys seemed to be lacking in one of the abilities that life-forms use to react to their environment.
So how do the engineers make a doll actually see In Cindy’s case, it’s a multistep process. When presented a text like “I love you” and asked “Can you read this ” Cindy identifies it as one of 70 preprogrammed commands. Then the inbuilt digital camera scans a 15-degree radius in search of number- or letter-shaped objects. Buried in her stomach, Cindy’s 16-bit microprocessor compares the text with her database of 700 words. If it’s a match, “ I love you,” she says.

书面表达:(共20分)
Ladies and gentlemen,
I'm Li Hua. Today, I'm greatly honored to speak here on behalf of my school. I'm going to talk about the high school education of my city.
From Chart 1, we can see high school students are from different family backgrounds. Besides local students, who make up 91 percent, eight percent of the students are the children of non-local workers. There are even 1 percent foreign students.
According to chart 2, the students' choices after graduation have presented a wider variety. Sixty percent of them intend to go to university. Thirty percent choose to enter vocational schools, and the rest ten percent plan to go abroad for further studies.
(1) I think we have more freedom to choose what we would like to do after graduation. Going to college is no longer the only choice for most of us as it was years ago.
(2) I think our city government has made more efforts to help the non-local workers. For example, their children can enjoy the equal right of a good education with the city students.
(3) I think with the economic development of our city, more foreigners are attracted to set up businesses here and they are happy to send their children to local schools to learn more about China and Chinese culture.
I believe the future of the education in our city is promising!

What will people die of 100 years from now If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in bio-technology(生物技术). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today's leading killers, such as heart diseases, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memory.
In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells(细胞) are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs(器官). The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on---in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.
It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic conditional human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future.

Danielle Steel, America's sweetheart, is one of the hardest working women in the book business. Unlike other productive authors who write one book at a time, she can work on up to five. Her research time before writing takes at least three years. Once she has fully studied her subjects, ready to dive into a book, she can spend twenty hours nonstop at her desk.
Danielle Steel comes from New York and was sent to France for her education. After graduation, she worked in the public relations and advertising industries. Later she started a job as a writer which she was best fit for. Her achievements are unbelievable: 390 million copies of books in print, nearly fifty New York Times best-selling novels, and a series of "Max and Martha" picture books for children to help them deal with the real-life problems of death, new hobbies and new schools. Her 1998 book about the death of her son shot to the top of the New York Times best-selling list as soon as it came out. Twenty-eight of her books have been made into films. She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for one of her books being the Times best-seller for 381 weeks straight.
Not content with a big house, a loving family, and a view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Danielle Steel considers her readers to be the most important resource(资源) and has kept in touch with them by e-mail. While she is often compared to the heroines(女主人公) of her own invention, her life is undoubtedly much quieter. But, if she does have anything in common with them, it is her strength of will and her inimitable(独特的) style. There is only one Danielle Steel.
41. Children who have read "Max and Martha" picture books may know ______.
A. how to deal with affairs at school

43. We can learn from the passage that Danielle Steel _____.
A. lives an exciting life
B. value her readers a lot
C. writes about quiet women
D. is pleased with her achievements

Most rain forests lie to the equator(赤道), where the climate is often mild and there are long hours of sunshine. The warmth of the land heats the air above, causing it to rise and tiny drops of water to fall as rain. The rainfall can reach at least 98 inches a year. This wet, warm world with plenty of sunlight is perfect for plants to grow, so the trees grow fast with green leaves all the year round. The trees themselves also have an effect on the climate. They gather water from the soil and pass it out into the air through their leaves. The wet air then forms clouds, which hang over the treetops like smoke. These clouds protect the forest from the daytime heat and night-time cold of nearby deserts, keeping temperatures fit for plant growth.
Rain forests slightly farther away from the equator remain just as warm, but they have a dry season of three months or more when little rain falls. Tree leaves fall during this dry season and new leaves grow when the wet season or monsoon(雨季) begins. Thus these areas are known as the "monsoon forest".
Another type of rain forest grows on tropical mountains. It is often called the "cloud forest" because clouds often hang over the trees like fog.
The rain forest is the ideal place for the growth of many different trees. Most of them depend on animals to eat their fruits and spread their seeds. When the fruits are eaten, the seeds inside them go undamaged through animals' stomachs and are passed out in their droppings. The seeds lying on the forest floor then grow into new trees.
44The climate of the rain forests near the equator is ______.
A. mild, wet and windy B. hot, rainy and foggy
C. hot, wet and cloudy D. warm, wet and sunny
45. We can learn from the passage that ______.

B. there is a dry season in the cloud forest on tropical mountains
C. clouds help the plants in the rain forests near the deserts to grow
D. the formation of climate in the rain forest has little to do with the trees
46 According to the passage, ______ play the most important role in the spreading of seeds.
A. animals B. droppings C. fruits D. winds
47 This passage is most likely to be found in _______.
A. a travel guide B. a story book C. a technical report D. a geographical book

All her life, my mother wanted busy children. It was very important that her house should remain at all things clean and tidy.
You could turn your back for a moment in my mother's house, leave a half written letter on the dining room table, a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had "put it back where it belonged." as she explained.
My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother's house, placed a packet of biscuits on an end table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet had been removed. Confused(疑惑的), she set down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. Up to then she had guessed that everyone in my family held onto their drinks, so as not to make water rings on the end tables. Now she knows better.
These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all inclined to (有......的倾向) forgetfulness, and it was common for one of us, upon returning from the bathroom, to find the every sign of his work in progress had disappeared suddenly. "Do you remember what I was doing " was a question frequently asked, but rarely answered.
Now my sister has developed a second-hand love of clean windows, and my brother does the cleaning in his house, perhaps to avoid having to be the one to lift his feet. I try not to think about it too much, but I have at this later time started to dust the furniture once a week.
48. Which of the following is TRUE about my mother

C. she forgot where she had left them
D. someone in my family was holding them
50. The underlined part to the fifth paragraph suggests that my sister _______.
A. is happy to clean windows
B. loves to clean used windows
C. is fond of clean used windows
D. likes clean windows as my mother did
51. This passage mainly tells us that _______.

B. my family members had a poor memory
C. my mother helped us to form a good habit
D. my wife was surprised when she visited my mother

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious(明显的) to the listeners. Why Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose you place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don't worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn't really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King's famous speech---"I have a Dream", you may notice that he stumbles(结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don't remember. Why Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.
People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication(交流). They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-though-out speech that expresses the speaker's ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker's attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don't worry about being perfect. Once you free you mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
52. The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ______.
A. be smarter than you B. notice your mistakes
C. do better than you D. know what you are talking about
53 You don't remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ______.
A. your meaning on the content
B. you don't fully understand the speech
C. you don't know what the speaker plans to say
D. you find the way of speech-making more important
54. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. giving a speech is like giving a performance
B. one or two mistakes in a speech may not be had
C. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D. the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be.
55. What would be the best title for the passage
A. How to Be a Perfect Speaker
B. How to Make a Perfect Speech
C. Don't Expect a Perfect Speech
D. Don't Expect Mistakes in a Speech

The latest United Nations report on the AIDS spread paints a sad picture. It concludes that the regions of the world most affected by AIDS will experienced rapid increases in deaths among young adults. This will have serious social and economic results.
The spread of AIDS and the virus that causes it, HIV, is particularly destructive in Africa. It is estimated that in sub-Saharan Africa, over twenty-four million adults and children are now living with HIV. In sixteen sub-Saharan countries, according to the UN, at least ten percent of the people between the ages of fifteen and forty-nine are HIV positive(阳性). In South Africa and Zimbabwe, half the people between those ages may die of AIDS. In Botswana, about one in three adults is infected, and some two-thirds of the country’s fifteen-year-old boys may die before they grow up.
As a result, agriculture, business, education, and healthcare are already suffering serious loss. The United States is spending millions on prevention campaigns and making AIDS treatment more affordable. Money is also being used to reduce mother-to-child transmission rates, support home and community-based care, and provide care for children orphaned by AIDS. The Peace Corps will soon make an all-out effort to bring AIDS education to the countries most at risk. It is important that the governments and citizens of those nations most affected by AIDS do their parts to fight against it. Some, like Senegal and Uganda, have already begun programs for disease prevention. These countries are experiencing falling or stable HIV rates and less suffering. But for other nations, much remains to be done.

It is now commonly known that AIDS is a deadly disease. It does great damage to human beings’ immune system, weakening resistance to disease and leading to death due to utter(彻底的) weakness. To this day, there are no existing drugs that can kill the AIDS virus. It is a deadly battle between science and AIDS.
This is only one side of the story. Although it cannot be cured, AIDS is preventable. For those who have not caught the disease, the knowledge of preventive measures seems to be the most powerful weapon at hand.
Since the discovery of the first AIDS patient in 1985, the number of HIV carriers is on an alarming rise in China and statistics show that young people are the more likely victims of AIDS. Nationwide there are 214 million people between the ages of 13 and 22, most of whom are students. If no measures are taken to protect these young people, it is almost certain that the threat of AIDS will be very real to them. There has been a great deal of misinformation concerning the transmission of AIDS.
One of the most misleading myths is that AIDS can be transmitted by casual physical contact such as kissing, shaking hands or sharing food container. Surveys and investigations conducted in some universities and colleges show that half of those people questioned are not clear about how AIDS is transmitted, not to mention how it is prevented.
This is the driving force behind the State Education Department’s decision to spread AIDS awareness information among college students and later to high school students and primary school students.
4. Why does the passage say that AIDS is a deadly disease
Because it destroys the immune system of the human body.
Because the AIDS patients cannot resist diseases and will die.
Because the doctor can find no medicine to cure AIDS.
All of the above.
5. By writing “This is only one side of the story”, the author suggests that __________.
although we can’t cure AIDS, we can manage to prevent it
AIDS is very dangerous, but we should not be scared of it
AIDS is not curable, but doctors should not give up fighting against it
although the doctors cannot cure the disease, they can help improve the patients’ health
6. What can be concluded from the surveys and investigations mentioned in the passage
No college students know people become AIDS victims.
50 percent of college students do not know how to prevent AIDS.
Many college students are not aware how people become AIDS victims.
Many college students did not mention AIDS prevention in the surveys and investigations.
7. What is the best tile for this passage
A. China Fights AIDS B. Young People ---- Most Likely AIDS Victims
AIDS Information Is Necessary D. AIDS ----- A Deadly Disease

It is a day when all nations are expected to work together to fight against drug abuse. It is reported that over one million people in China take illegal drugs and the number is still increasing. Worse still, a large number of them are teenagers. Once addicted to drugs, it’s difficult for you to get rid of them. Many drug takers lose their possessions or families in order to obtain drugs. Some even commit crimes and end up in prison. As high school students, we must know the danger of drug abuse. We should try our best to help those who need help. We should stay away from drugs and value our own lives. 第三节:阅读理解 (共20小题:每小题1.5分,满分30分)
A
I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning how to stand on your own two feet. But take a look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at (attempting to seize) one another's hands for reassurance.
They claim that they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in mussel. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thusand?such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon?(蚕茧) — into a lager cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry had firmly carved out a teenager market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come toward high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.
36. The author's purpose of writing this passage is to tell____.
A?readers how to be popular with people around
B?teenagers how to decide things for themselves
C?parents how to control and guide their children
D?people how to understand and respect each other
37.According to the author, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but in fact, most of them __________________.
A?have much difficulty understanding each other
B?lack confidence
C?dare not cope with problems single?handed
D?are very much afraid of getting lost
38. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A. There is no popularity that really counts.
B. What many parents are doing is in fact hindering their children from finding their own paths.
C. It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.
D. Most teenagers claim that they want to do what they like to do.
39. The author thinks of advertisements as __________________.
A. convincing B. instructive C. effective D.?authoritative
40. During the teenage years, one should learn to __________________
A?differ from others in as many ways as possible
B?get into the right season and become popular
C?find one's real self
D?rebel against parents and the popularity waves

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the table, I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked: So, how have you been ” And the boy –who could not have been more than seven or eight years old—replied.” frankly, I have been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed(确认)my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were” depressed”, that is ,in low spirits, until we were in high school.
Undoubtedly a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.
Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Children as it once was no longer exist. Why
Human development is depended not only on both biological states, but also on patterns of gathing social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new social positions. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages; traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation(揭示)machine has been equipped in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resisted the temptation(诱惑),many children turn their attends from printed texts to the less challenging, more attractive moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children will gain. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
41. Traditionally a child is supposed to learn about the adult world ______ .
A. through connection with society
B. gradually and under guidance
C. naturally without being taught
D. through watching television
42. According to the author, that today’s children seem adult like result from ______.
A. the widespread influence of television
B. the poor arrangement of teaching content
C. the fast pace of human scientific development
D. the rising standard of living
43. What does the author think of communication through print for children
A. It enables children to gain more social information.
B. It develops children’s interest in reading and writing.
C. It helps children to read and write well.
D. It can control what children are to learn.
44. What does the author think of the change in today’s children
A. He feels their adult like behavior is funny.
B. He thinks the change worthy of note.
C. He considers it a rapid development
D. He seems to be upset about it.

The first reality TV show in the world was called Expedition Robinson and it was shown in Sweden in 1997. Half the population of the country watched the final event and a new kind of TV program was born. Two years later in Holland , the first series of Big Brother was filmed. Again, it was a great success and the final program was watched by 15 million people. Now more than 20 countries around the world have Big Brother or Expedition Robinson on their TV screens. The ordinary people who take part in the programs are known by millions of people in their own countries and reality TV has become big, big business.
For the TV producers, reality TV is a dream come true because many of the programs cost nothing to make. At some point, the television viewers are asked to telephone the program to vote or to apply to take part in the show. It is the cost of these telephone calls that pays for the shows. One of the most popular shows is Pop Idol. In the show a group of attractive young people are made into pop stars. TV viewers vote for their favorite person on the show. The winner makes a record and millions of copies of the record are sold. His or her pictures are published on the covers of magazines or on the front pages of newspapers, and then, they are quickly forgotten.
But not everyone is happy about reality TV. In Portugal, two TV channels got into trouble because they showed too much of the personal lives of the people in the shows. In France, reality TV is called “rubbish TV” and the TV studios of Big Brother were attacked three times in one week. In Greece, Big Brother was described as “against human rights and civilization”.
45. Those who take part in the reality TV shows are usually _____.
A. common people B. pop TV stars C. attractive people D. famous film stars

47. It can be concluded from the passage that ______.
A. everyone is happy about reality TV.
B. reality TV will do well in many countries.

Dear Doctor,
My husband and I got married in 1965 and for the first ten years of our marriage I was very happy to stay home and raise our three children. Then four years ago, our youngest child went to school and I thought I might go back to work.
My husband was very supportive and helped me to make my decision. He emphasized all of the things I can do around the house, and said he thought I could be a great success in business.
After several weeks of job--hunting, I found my present job, which is working for a small public relations firm. At first, my husband was very proud of me and would tell his friends, “My clever little wife can run that company she’s working for.”
But as his joking remark was close to reality, my husband stopped talking to me about my job. I have received several promotions and pay increases, and I am now making more money than he is. I can buy my own clothes and a new car. Because of our combined incomes, my husband and I can do man), things that we had always dreamed of doing, but we don’t do these things because he is very unhappy.
We fight about little things and my husband is very critical of me in front of our friends. For the first time in our marriage, I think there is a possibility that our marriage may come to an end.
I love my husband very much, and I do not want him to feel inferior, but I also love my job. I think I can be a good wife and a working woman, but I don’t know how. Can you give me some advice Will I have to choose one or the other or can I keep both my husband and my new career

You are what you eat and fats are a main food for Asia’s fast-food generation. Dr. Chwang, director of the Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. That is a thorough departure from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat. “They like big pieces of fried meat with a soft drink. So although they may eat the same volume of food, their calorie intake (卡路里摄入量)has increased. Now about 40 to 45 percent of their calories come from fat,”says Chwang.
Although on the whole Asians tend towards thinness, culture -namely Asians’ hospitality (好客)-is a reason for the fatness of today’s generation, according to Chwang. “Asian people love food,”she says. “Eating and drinking are important social and family functions. ”In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special occasions as people were more careful with money. In today’s climate of wealth and remarkable consumption, 10-course meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.
More than anyone else, children are on the receiving end of their parents’ improved circumstances. “In the past, people had four or more children-now, they have one or two, so they tend to spoil them,”says Chwang. “The easiest way is to give them ‘quality food’. Parents think feeding them well is showing their love. They feel bad when their children look thin. ”
When describing the physical condition of most overweight Asian children, Chwang says: “There is a clear relationship between fatness and indoor play. Children get fat because they don’t move, and eventually, they don’t want to move because they’re fat. ”
Thanks to technology, a growing army of children prefer video games to old outdoor sports. “What do children do when watching TV or sitting in front of the computer playing video games They eat chocolate and drink Coke,”says Chwang.
52. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage

C. Asian children eat big meals on more occasions.
D. Culture contributes to the fatness of Asian children.

A. their children don’t love eating and drinking

54. According to this passage, the “quality food” fed by some parents is actually __________.
A. helpful food
B. qualified food
C. agreeable food
D. high-calorie food
55. The purpose of this article is to ________.

Although Ripton Rosen was a white boy living in a luxurious penthouse (豪华顶层公寓), he liked to play baseball with his black teammates of the same street. Ripton sometimes invited the boys to his home to play video games. As time went on, several of them became frequent visitors to the 16th-floor penthouse. In time, the group developed into five regulars: Will and Kindu, Philippe Medina, Juan Carlos Robinson and Carlos Suarez.
“In the beginning, it was just a lot of kids moving all over the place,” says Michael, Ripton’s father. Things then began changing in small ways. When the Rosens realized Carlos wasn’t attending school because he didn’t have suita-ble clothes, they bought him some. Then one night, they took the group to a bookstore after a Chinese dinner and realized there were other needs. “The boys had no interest in books at all,” Michael says. Back at the penthouse, he insisted they sit down to read aloud and start a half-hour reading period before video games or television every day.
Slowly the five black boys became a necessary part of the Rosen family. Housework was assigned, including cleaning, loading the dishwasher and walking Mr. Jenkins, the family dog.
The boys’ own families were puzzled by what was
happening. “My mom didn’t believe me when I told her about the penthouse,” says Kindu. “She thought I was involved with something bad.” Juan Carlos’s mother, Esther Ruiz, wondered, “Why would the Rosens be doing this ” But as time went on, she noticed changes in her son. “He was getting responsible. The Rosens are the best.”

Have you heard of the saying, “If anything is worth doing, it is worth doing well” The proverb is a piece of advice to make effort towards perfection in whichever job one does. It could be a small task like folding up your clothes, or a major one like organizing a business meeting in your later life.
Perfection is nothing but attention to details. If it is your job to dust the furniture at home, dust it so that not a single spot of dirt shows from any angle. If your task is to make the beds, make them so that not a single crease (皱痕) shows on the bed-covers.
There are only two ways to do a job: either sloppily, or well. If you choose the latter path, you need to realize that any job that qualifies as “your” work deserves nothing less than your best. Perfection is an attitude that can be cultivated (培养) with just a little effort. It is a habit that stands one in good stead in later life. Let us prove with an example: you may be asked to turn in an essay on, say, wildlife, for a school project. Instead of writing carelessly a few facts that you already know, you could make the project more effective by looking up reference books, encyclopedias (百科全书) or websites for additional information. You could then go over the finished essay for slips (疏漏) and errors, and provide pictures where necessary. If you make it a habit to put in extra effort in your school homework, will it not help you to handle more difficult projects at the college or university level
As Michelangelo, the famous 16th century sculptor and painter, once put it: Trifles (琐事) go to make perfection, and perfection is no trifle.
40. According to the passage, to achieve perfection is _____.
A. to realize the quality of the work
B. to pay attention to details of one’s work
C. to do as many jobs as possible
D. to form the habit of doing things ahead of time
41. The underlined word “sloppily” in Paragraph 3 may mean _____.
A. badly B. patiently
C. carefully D. slowly
42. What can be inferred from the third paragraph
A. It is necessary to provide pictures for your essay.
B. Websites are the sources of information you want.
C. Perfection is a habit that promises a good future.
D. You should make much effort to develop perfection.
43. The purpose of writing this passage is to _____.
A. introduce the famous painter Michelangelo
B. advise us to do the things that are worth doing
C. explain to us the meaning of the perfection
D. expect us to give our best to our work

The terracotta figures were made both in workshops by government labourers and also by local craftsmen. The head, arms, legs and trunk were created separately and then put together. Studies show that eight face moulds (模具) were probably used and then clay was added to give them individual facial features. Once the parts were put together, the intricate (复杂的) features such as facial expressions were added. It is believed that their legs were made in much the same way that terracotta drainage pipes were made at the time. This would make it a factory line style of production, with specific parts made and put together after being fired as opposed to crafting one solid piece of terracotta and subsequently firing it. At the time each workshop was required to inscribe its name on items produced so as to ensure quality control; this has aided modern day historians, as they can tell that workshops that once made tiles and other everyday items were commanded to begin working on the terracotta army. After completion, the terracotta figures were placed in the pits in precise military formation according to rank and duty.
The terracotta figures are lifelike and life-size. They vary in height, hairstyle and uniform painted different colours in accordance with rank. The colored lacquer (漆) finish, individual facial features, and real weapons and armor used in making these figures created a realistic appearance. The weapons were stolen shortly after the creation of the army and the coloring has mostly faded. However, their existence served as a testament to the amount of labour and skill involved in their construction. It is also proof of the incredible amount of power the First Emperor possessed to order such a monumental undertaking as the making of the terracotta army.
44. The passage mainly tells us ______.

It turns out that the Nobel-winning geneticist who was “inherently gloomy (悲观的) about the prospect of Africa” is inherently 16 percent African, or an amount of “someone who had a great-grandparent who was African”, according to a scientist who made the discovery.
Two months ago, Dr. James Watson, who helped crack the DNA code decades ago, apologized for suggesting black people, over all, are not as intelligent as whites. He also resigned as chancellor of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island.
“There are many people of colour who are very talented,” he said. The comment, we now know, applied to 16 percent of him as well.
He also tried to prevent any further talk from continuing by saying that “there is no scientific basis for such a belief”. Still, a debate erupted online when a blogger Arthur offered an academic defense of the claim that started the anger. Critics are still piling on, with Malcolm Gladwell being the latest in this week’s New Yorker.
Richard E. Nisbett, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, offered another thorough rebuttal in a New York Times Op-Ed, “All Brains Are the Same Colour”.
“The evidence heavily favours the view that race differences in IQ are environmental in origin, not genetic,” he proposed.
Dr. Watson set himself up for this ironic (讽刺的) moment by agreeing earlier this year to be the first person to publish his genetic code for all to study. But he won’t be the last, as companies race to create relatively cost-effective ways to bring DNA publishing to the masses.
Those who join Dr. Watson in complete DNA openness may be wise to remember two lessons from this event: think before you speak, and also try to memorize all your own six billion letters of your genetic code.
51. The Nobel-winning geneticist in the passage refers to _____.
A. Richard E. Nisbett B. Malcolm Gladwell
C. Dr. James Watson D. Arthur
52. The author thinks the geneticist’s comment about black people is _____.

C. convincing D. practical
53. What does the underlined word “rebuttal” in the fifth paragraph mean?
A. Approval. B. Disproof.
C. Support. D. Disadvantage.
54. Why are races different in IQ, according to Richard E. Nisbett
A. Because some races are born foolish.
B. Because some races are born intelligent.
C. Because races are different in genes.
D. Because races originated in different environment.
55. Based on which fact does the author say “try to memorize all your own six billion letters of your genetic code” in the last paragraph
A. The geneticist who claimed IQ differences between blacks and whites based on DNA has part of African genes himself.
B. It’s important to know about your own genetic code before you express some academic opinions about it.
C. A blogger Arthur offered an academic defense of the claim that white people are more talented than people of colour in the genetic sense.
D. Richard E. Nisbett offered evidence against the claim by coming up with the environmental factor to explain the IQ differences.
