Who was Clara Barton? For most people, the easy answer to that question is that she was a nurse during the Civil War. The truth is that her Work during the war represents a small part of a long, extraordinary life.Barton never married and never had children. Instead of devoting herself to one family, she worked much more widely. And while she focused on the needs of humanity, she became famous at a time when women were not expected to have full lives outside their homes and families.
Barton was; described as an extremely shy child. But she is remembered today as a fearless advocate for people in need. She also met powerful men-lawmakers,generals,and world leaders-who became supporters in her work to help others.
When the Civil War began in 1861, Henry Wilson met Barton when they both tried to organize supplies and aid for injured soldiers arriving in the nation's capital. As the chairman of the Military Affairs Committee, Wilson knew how the government functioned and how to make things happen.Barton knew she wanted to be actively involved in helping soldiers. Working as a team, Wilson and Barton aided each other in their efforts during the war.
Major General Benjamin F. Butler met Barton during the war, too. He was commander of the Army of the James, which fought in Virginia and North Carolina. He put Barton in charge of nursing in a mobile hospital. When he later became governor of Massachusetts, he appointed Barton in charge of the Massachusetts Reformatory Prison.
During Barton's first visit to Europe, she met Swiss doctor Louis Appia. Appia was one of the founders of the International Committee of the Red Cross.Although Barton had not heard of the organization, Appia was familiar with Barton's work during the Civil War. Their meeting gave Barton the idea to establish the American Red Cross. She spent a decade persuading American leaders to support the organization.
Today, the American Red Cross encourages people to continue to pursue the goal to which Barton devoted her life: Work together and help one another when disaster strikes. That may be Clara Barton's greatest legacy(遗产).
24. From Paragraph 1, we can conclude that
A. Barton has fulfilled what no other woman can
B.She devoted her personal life to a larger cause
C. It was in the Civil War that Barton rose to fame
D. Her family kept encouraging her to work outside
A. Helping the government fun_ction.
B. Taking care of the wounded soldiers.
C. Establishing many mobile hospitals.
D. Providing medical services in prisons.
26. What does the underlined words “the organization” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.the American Red Cross
B. the Military Affairs Committee
C.the Massachusetts Reformatory Prison
D. the International Committee of the Red Cross
27. The passage mainly intends to
A. explain how wars made nations and people suffer
B.describe how American Red Cross came into being
C. introduce the life and achievements of Clara Barton
D. list powerful figures and their influences on Barton

People who are blind are able to better complete various practical and navigation tasks with the help of echolocation(回声定位),a new research suggests.
Echolocation occurs when an animal gives out a sound that bounces off objects in the environment, returning echoes that provide information about the surrounding space. While the technique is well known in whales and bats, some people who are blind use click-based echolocation to judge spaces and improve their navigation skills.
Lore Thaler at Durham University in the UK and colleagues looked into the factors that determine how people learn this skill. Over the course of a 10-week training programme, the team investigated how level of vision and age affect the leaning of click-based echolocation, and how learning this skill affects the daily life of people who are blind.
Blind and sighted participants aged between 21 and 79 took part in 20 two-to-three-hour training sessions over the study period. Blind participants also took part in a three-month follow-up survey assessing the effects of the training on their daily life.
The researchers found that people who are blind and those who are sighted improved considerably on all measures. In the follow-up survey, all participants who were blind reported improved mobility, and 83 per cent reported better independence and well-being.
The results suggest the ability to learn click-based echolocation isn't strongly limited by age or level of vision, the researchers say, and this can potentially benefit people with vision loss or in the early stages of progressive vision loss.
“I cannot think of any other work with blind participants that has had such enthusiastic feedback,” said Thaler.
Click-based echolocation is currently not taught as part of mobility training and rehabilitation (恢复正常生活)for people who are blind. Experts say there is a possibility that some people are reluctant to use it. due to the shame around making the required clicks in social environments.
Despite this, the results indicate that people who use echolocation, and people new to echolocation, are confident about using it in social situations, the researchers say.
28 What can we learn about echolocation from the passage?
It is helpful to those who are blind
B. It merely applies to whales and bats. .
C. It helps animals send back their echoes.
D. It works by locating the surrounding space.
29.What did Thaler’s research focus on?
A. The impact of the skill on training
B. Participants' age and level of vision.
C. The factors deciding the skill learning.
D. Participants' independence and well-being.
30. What can be inferred from the result of the research?
A. Echolocation will allow the blind to see the world again
B. The training makes participants more likely to live independently.
C. Age or level of vision has much to do with the ability to learn echolocation.
D. The ability to learn click-based echolocation decides the participants' well-being.
31. What is indicated in the last two paragraphs?
A. Social situations will require the blind to use echolocation.
B. It's impossible for the blind to apply echolocation to their life.
C. Echolocation has a bright future among the people who are blind.
D. The blind will accept echolocation by not making the required clicks.
D
Literature makes us better thinkers. It moves us to see the multi-sidedness of situations and therefore expands the width of our own visions, moving us towards dreams and solutions we might not otherwise have imagined.
-Judith Langer,Envisioning Literature.
When students study Literature, they learn to appreciate words and their power. They travel to other areas and times through the texts they read. They understand about their own culture and others'. They learn to empathize (共情) with characters, to feel their joys and pain. For example, one 15-year-old student shared with me that when studying the short story The Shoes of My Sensei by Goh Sin Tub,he could put himself into the shoes of those who lived through World War II, and understand their suffering, and what it was like during that time.
Importantly, they lean to consider multiple aspects and understand the complexity of human nature. Take, for example,George Orwell's Animal Farm.Do we feel Napoleon is fully responsible for the miserable lives the animals lead? Aren't the other animals responsible for their own misfortune too, having allowed Napoleon to bully them? In Literature, as in life, things aren't always so clear cut, in black and white. And there lies the value of the subject-it prepares one for the ambiguities (模棱两可) of life,to take uncertainties in one's stride.
Literature develops in students lasting values, such as integrity, sympathy, loyalty and responsibility. For example, in a text like Arthur Miller's The Crucible, the main character chooses to sacrifice his own life rather than betray his friends and neighbors. When considering this character's motivations, students discuss the value of integrity. They reflect on what it takes to be a man or woman who commands the. respect of the people around them even in difficult situations. The texts students explore give them multiple opportunities to discuss and re-evaluate their own values and beliefs. These act as a compass in life as students grow up.
32.Why is an example of a 15-year-old student mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To raise people's awareness of appreciating others' culture.
B. To appeal to readers to read more Literature on World War II.
C. To remind students that Literature can make the world free of war.
D. To show Literature can make one think from others' points of view.
33. What does the underlined part probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Accept something uncertain without special effort.
B. Allow one to take the ambiguities of life for granted.
C.Have the courage to face the misfortune occurring in life.
D.Take the responsibility to fight against the miserable lives.
34. According to the last paragraph, Literature can help students_____
A. lead a happy life
B. build up right values
C. get on well with friends
D. handle difficult situations
35.What might be the best title for the text?
A. Where should students start when they study Literature?
B. What will students gain through the study of Literature?
C. Why will Literature help students in their future success?
D. How can we support students in their study of Literature?

If you are a naturally cheerful person, you may be less likely to fall into depression and anxiety. This, however, doesn't mean happy people are free of mental health issues. 36 Even the strongest people break. A good sense of humor is a natural way to keep your stress levels in check. The following tips will help you develop it.
Focus your attention on things that make you happy. 37 Try to stay happy by doing things that make you smile. A good way to do so is by identifying the simple things that bring good thoughts and fond memories.
38 Knowing your audience is a key point to making them laugh. Try to read and judge how others are reacting to your humor. If you have people falling out of their seats, it's probably a safe bet that you can continue telling jokes. On the other hand, if they have been quiet for a long time or seems offended it is probably better to switch to a different topic, one that you think will relate better to them.
Keep up a giving spirit. 39 When in the company of funny people, get involved in making jokes with them. When they make you laugh, return the favor by sharing funny stories.
Practice. The last little bit of advice is practice. Comedy is something where it all comes down to Delivery and Timing. If your delivery and timing are not correct even the funniest jokes can fall flat. So how do you improve your delivery and timing? By practice. Keep practicing. Keep telling those jokes. 40
A. Not just material things.
B.Life can be tough at times.
C. Be careful not to offend others.
D. Joy always comes with happiness.
E.Hang out and observe other funny people.
F. So you should go ahead and perform those jokes.
G. Practice is something you need to enhance the skill.

Peter and Handy were twin brothers. Though they looked the same their hearts and minds were completely opposite. Peter lived to enjoy his life. He never cared for people around him. All he concerned about was his happiness. On the other hand, Handy liked helping people. He was good at heart. He liked taking care of his grandparents, doing housework for his mom and dad. His friends and teachers appreciated him as he was always ready to lend a hand.
It was summer vacation. Peter and Handy decided to go hiking. The first day of the hike was good and the brothers enjoyed a lot. Unfortunately, the brothers lost their way during the second day of the hike. Peter started walking deep into the forest while Handy was following him.
After a while, the brothers lost track of each other as well. On the way, Peter met an old man who begged him for food. Peter simply refused to give his share to him. Next, he met a little girl who had hurt her leg. She asked him to help her get back to her village nearby. Again, Peter refused to offer any kind of help and carried on his way.
Though Handy couldn't see Peter, he was actually just a few yards behind him. When he met the old man, he offered him all the food he had and went his way. Soon, he came across the little girl as well. He helped her stand up, offered her some water and even helped her get back to her village.
It was evening by the time. The little girl's parents advised him to spend the night with them. “We'll go with you to help you find your brother and friends," they said. Handy agreed. On the other hand, the darkness and the voices in the jungle started scaring Peter. He wished someone was there to help him. But there was no one in sight except dark reflections in the jungle. He was feeling cold and lonely.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to recommend two types of books. The first type is fantasy novels, which are very popular with students. Some examples of good fantasy novels would be The Lord of the Rings series and the Harry Potter series.
The second type of book I would like to recommend is biographies. Good biographies such as Marie Curie: A Life will inspire students to study harder and reach their goals. In addition to biographies of historical figures, biographies of contemporary figures can be considered.
I look forward to reading more fantasy novels and biographies in the reading room soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
Suddenly,Peter came across the same old man again. He ran to him and begged for help. “Help me! I'm lost! Have you seen my brother? He looks just like me.” The old man looked at Peter and said,“Surely I've seen that kind and helpful child. But, why should I help you? You refused to help me.Now go away from here!” Then Peter left. Soon, he saw lights down the hill. It looked like a village. Finally he got to the village with aching legs.
At the entrance of the village, he met the same girl he had refused to help.He asked her to find him shelter for the night, but the girl turned him down, “Spend the night under that tree. You deserve it!” How ashamed he felt! At dawn, Peter heard a voice calling his name. It was Handy and the little village girl. Peter rushed to Handy, “Thank god, brother! Now I realize how important to help others.” Peter and Handy looked and behaved the same from that day.

Text 1
M: Look at the boats on the lake. I'd like to hire one and sail to the other side.
W:Great idea. My feet are tired from walking.
M:We can sit on the grass and eat our lunch afterwards.
Text 2
W: Phew, just in time. If I hadn't run for this train, I would have had to walk home. Now I'm out
of breath.
M:You should give up smoking.
W:I have never smoked, and I exercise every day.
Text 3
W: I thought making this sweater would be a relaxing thing. How wrong I was!
M: Well, before you get angry, is there anything I can do to help?
W:Not really. The pattern just doesn't make sense. The instructions are impossible.
Text 4
M:This beautiful sofa folds out to become a bed.
W: Oh, that's a good idea. Space is limited in my house. How much is it?
M:You're in luck. The factory gave our shop a discount, so we can pass that on to the customer.
Text 5
W: Do you like my ring? My husband said the stone matches my eyes.
M:So it does. Did you know blue eyes like yours are becoming rarer? Brown is taking over.
W: My sister's are green.
Text 6
M: OK,what's the joke?
W:Sorry?
M: Why are you laughing? Did you win something?
W: No,it's nothing like that. When I got off the bus just now, a man's hat was blown off by the
wind, and it landed on someone else' s head. It was so funny.
M: You didn't need to catch the bus. I would have collected you in the car.
W: It's OK. It was very convenient. My meeting finished at 11 am and the bus was ten minutes
later. It was only a twenty-minute ride home.
Text 7
W: Steven, it's your turn to do the shopping this week.
M:Are you sure? It hasn't been long since I did it last time.
W:Yes,you always follow on from Margo. I think you know that.
M:OK,what do we need?
W:We're getting low on potatoes, rice, carrots and we have no sugar left at all.
M: It's quite a bad time for me. I'm due to meet my professor this afternoon to discuss my study
plan.
W: Oh, we all have other things to do. Caroline has exams and Peter has called to say one of his
parents is ill.
M: Fair enough. Do you mind if I borrow your bike? I'll be able to get back to college quicker that way.
W:That'll be fine.I'll write a list of things we need.
Text 8
W: Are we still on for this weekend?
M:Absolutely. I've been excited all week for this trip. What time you'll want to leave?
W: Early I think. Why don't you come pick me up around eight? I'll buy us breakfast before we hit the road.
M: Alright. I've already packed us lunches, so we won't have to worry about anything until dinner
then.
W:I'm so excited. The ride there is going to be so beautiful with all the autumn colors.
M: I can't wait for Eric to show us his new house. I was surprised when he bought it, but the pictures he sent are all amazing. Plus, the weather is going to be perfect.
W:Yes.His backyard is bigger than the park we used to play at. I think he even has a pond.
M: Well, that's why he moved away from the city. He could never buy a place like that here, no matter how much money he spent.
W:He's lucky to have such a flexible job. Maybe I need to go back to school like he did.
Text 9
W:Did you see the strange lights in the sky?
M: Yes, I did. I was watching TV when my wife called me outside last night. She thought she saw something two or three nights ago as well, but it was just a plane.
W:Well,last night's wasn't a plane, was it?
M: Definitely not. I saw one light at first, then another - and then a really bright one. They were there for ages, moving across the sky.
W:But what were they?I've seen shooting stars before, but never anything like that.
M: I read recently that an old Russian satellite was expected to crash back to Earth.
W:I bet it was that.
M:Me too.
W: That is so dangerous, though. What if it landed on someone's house?
M: Oh,I think those things burn up before they ever reach land.
W: I wonder why we haven't seen anything about it on the TV news.
M: Maybe we were the only ones who saw it, though I doubt it.
W: There was nothing in the newspapers either, as far as I could see.
M: Tell you what, I'll have a look on the Internet for strange objects in the sky over this area.
W:Good idea. If anyone saw the lights, they'd be sure to post something about it there.
Text 10
W:A test of the ability of birds to solve problems has revealed how traffic noise affects their skills. Scientists set some wild birds a series of tests-some with traffic noise and others without. They found that the sound of passing cars harmed the birds' ability to find food. The results suggest that noise pollution has previously unknown consequences for wild creatures. Prof Christopher Templeton from Pacific University in Oregon, US, led the study. He carried it out in a laboratory. Researchers set the bird tasks both in a quiet setting and a noisy setting with a record of road traffic.Prof Templeton explained that just hearing a car drive by was enough to affect their performance. One task involved getting food from some lids that the birds had to turn over to reveal the reward. In another test, the birds had to work out the way into a pipe that had a piece of food inside. Professor Templeton said they were almost twice as likely to do the tasks correctly if they don't hear traffic noise. There is more evidence that human-made noise has a variety of negative effects on wildlife. It's getting really difficult to find totally quiet environments not touched by human noise. But we can change road surfaces, or think about redesigning a vehicle's tires. There's great possibility for trying to reduce noise.

第24题 第一段第三行“Instead of devoting herself to one family, she worked much more widely”说明她在更广泛的领域工作奉献,没有自己的小家庭,故选B。
第25题 细节理解题 第三段开头定位到时间“Civil War”第二行“tried to organize supplies and aid for soldiers”对应B项照顾受伤的士兵,故选B
第26题 第五段第四行,划线词的前一句“their meeting gave Barton the idea to establish the American Red Cross.”
第28题 A ? A选项定位至首段“people who are blind are able to better complete …with the help of echolocation”可知回声定位技术对盲人有好处,故A项正确。
细节理解题 A选项与倒数第二段中“is currently not taught as …” C选项由末端末句“are confident about using it”可知此项技术由光明前景。
第33题A ?推测词义题 由上文“it prepares one for the ambiguities of life”可知阅读的功效是能让学生为不确定的东西做准备,A项符合题意。Take … in one’s stride意为轻而易举做某事。B项take sth for granted 认为…
