It was an afternoon in August. I was just short of turning eighteen. I stood in front of a six story high, red brick building. It was to be my new home for the next several years. I was a bit scared, unsettled and thrilled at the same time. I had two suitcases and a bag with me. In them were packed all of my clothes, towels, sheets, alarm clock and everything else I thought I would need. I carried them upstairs and then threw them on my bed. I looked around the room wondering what life had in store for me.
It was another afternoon in August. I was just short of turning forty two. My daughter was eighteen and we were standing in front of the same building. I smiled as I helped her carry her things up to her room but I also noticed that my wife and I were making more than one trip. All of the students not just my daughter seemed to have so much more stuff than I did all those years ago. Yet, it didn抰 seem to make things any better for them. In fact, they looked more stressed than I remembered being on my first day there. At that moment, I wondered what life had in store for my daughter.
Last night I had a dream that I have had many times before. I was back in that same room with my belongings piled on my bed searching for my course book and wondering what classes I would take. I often wondered what this dream meant but when I woke up this morning it became crystal clear to me. We are sometimes teachers in the life, but we are always students in it. We are here taking the most important class ever. We are here to learn to love ourselves. We are here to learn to love everyone as ourselves. And it takes a lifetime. The stuff we carry with us through this life doesn抰 matter at all either. It is the stuff we carry inside of us when we leave this life that really counts.
4.What do the author and her daughter had in common?
They were admitted into the same college.
They brought equally heavy stuff to the dormitory.
They had a shared accommodation with their friends.
They both wondered what life would be like in the future.
5.Why did the students take so much staff ?
Because their parents loved them.
Because their parents could carry it for them.
Because they wanted to be stressed.
Because they wanted to make things better.
6. Which of the following best describes the author as a father?
A. Generous. B. Diligent. C. Caring. D. Demanding.
7. How does the author develop the passage?
A. By making comparisons B. By analyzing causes.
C. By describing processes. D. By presenting an argument.
C
When he was a schoolboy, Liu Cixin抯 favorite book was Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. He found the book hidden in an old box that once belonged to his father. 揟his very book turned me into a science-fiction fan, Liu says.
His first novel, The Devil抯 Bricks, came out in 2002, but it wasn抰 until 2006 that he had his breakthrough, with The Three-Body Problem. The Three-Body Problem was brought to a western audience by Tor Books in New York in 2013. It was translated by Ken Liu. In his translator抯 note, Ken writes: The Chinese literary tradition shaped and was shaped by its readers, giving rise to different emphases and preferences in fiction compared to what American readers expect.
What western readers expected of Chinese science fiction is a curious topic. Western eyes have a tendency to view China as a country full of mysticism. But Liu says it’s a mistake to think that Chinese sci-fi doesn’t share common points with its western equivalents(同等物). “ All themes once explored in the American and European sci-fi genre (类型)can be found in the Chinese counterpart-things like space exploration, alien contact, artificial intelligence, and life science. Yet Chinese sci-fi does have its own unique themes as well, such as the attempt to re-display the ancient history of China from a sci-fi angle.
Liu remains mildly surprised by the success of The Three-Body Problem outside China. 揂ll we had hoped for was just to let American readers become aware that there is sci-fi in China. Now that it has been accepted by readers in the UK and the US, it supports an idea I once had: sci-fi is the most global, the most universal of literary forms, which can be understood by all cultures. Sci-fi novels are concerned with problems faced by all of humanity. This is a unique and treasurable quality in the genre-- that the human race is recognized as a single entity(存在), undivided,” Liu says.
8. What did the book Journey to the Centre of the Earth mean to Liu?
A. It opened the door to the sci-fi world.
B. It told him what science fiction is .
C. It brought some fame to him.
D. It inspired him to be a critic.
9. How does Ken look at the Chinese literary tradition?
A. It lacks variety.
B. It should be well preserved.
C. It is greatly influenced by its audiences.
D. It has met western readers expectations.
10. What is a characteristic of Chinese sci-fi?
A. It has a wide range of themes.
B. It is abstract to western readers.
C. It pays more attention to history.
D. It is gaining popularity among youths.
11. What do Liu抯 words in the last paragraph show?
A. Chinese sci-fi still has a long way to go.
B. Sci-fi novels reflect real-life problems.
C. The importance of sci-fi is undervalued.
D. Sci-fi should focus primarily on culture.
D
On paper, hydrogen(H2)looks like a dream fuel. Coal, oil, and natural gas produce carbon dioxide, which warms the earth when burned, Hydrogen produces pure water. Hydrogen packs more energy into less space than a battery(but certainly less than petrol. Also, empty tanks(燃料箱)can be refilled with hydrogen much faster than refilling empty batteries with electricity.
While in practice, things are trickier. Storing a meaningful amount of hydrogen gas requires pressing it several hundred-fold. Changing it into the liquid form is another option, but it should be cooled to-253C.Both processes require a heavy and strong tank. While a 700 bar tank is acceptable for a city bus or a truck, adapting it for use in small vehicles is very difficult because the pressure during refilling would be too great.
The solution? Powerpaste.
A German team of researchers, led by Marcus Vogt, have come up with an interesting "powerpaste", which can store hydrogen energy at atmospheric pressure, ready for release when needed. It is so named because it comes in tubes and looks like toothpaste(牙膏), not in its traditional form of gas.
The main ingredient(原料)of the paste is magnesium hydride, a substance that reacts with water to form hydrogen. The escaped hydrogen can then be directed into a fuel cell, where it reacts with oxygen from the air to produce electric power.
Refueling is very simple, as instead of going to a filling station, drivers and riders can simply replace an empty tube with a new one and refill the water tank.
Given that powerpaste only begins to break down at temperatures of around 250℃ it remains safe even when a vehicle stands in the baking sun for hours.
However, we will have to be patient. Just because researchers have succeeded in developing a new fueling way does not mean that we can expect to see such vehicles on the road anytime soon. It will indeed be several years before this concept is turned into reality.
12 . As a fuel, what is the advantage of hydrogen over oil?
A.Refilling empty tanks will be more convenient.
B.It is less likely to worsen global warming
C.More energy can be packed in the same space.
D.It will produce pure water for people to drink.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The practical difficulties to use hydrogen as fuel in small vehicles.
B.The detailed processes of adapting a strong tank in small vehicles.
C.The differences in fueling between large vehicles and small ones.
D.The tricks of building strong tanks in small vehicles.
14. The author mentions the refueling process to show that powerpaste is______________.
A.Inexpensive B.Powerful C.convenient D.environment-friendly
15. Why does the author call on the readers to be patient?
A.Powerpaste-driven vehicles sometimes move very slowly on the road.
B.Practical use of powerpaste-driven vehicles will not come very soon.
C.Powerpaste-driven vehicles can only work after being in the sun for hours
D.It will be years before the researchers work out the concept of powerpaste.
