A
Researchers
spotted
the
killer
whale
they
call
J35
alongside
her
playful
and
lively
new
calf
on
Saturday—a
ray
of
hope
for
the
endangered
Southern
Resident
population
off
the
Pacific
Northwest.
An
orca
that
once
spent
17
days
carrying
her
dead
calf
has
become
a
mother
once
again.
The
orca,
identified
by
researchers
as
J35
and
also
known
as
Tahlequah,
became
a
symbol
in
2018
of
the
difficult
situation
of
the
Southern
Resident
whales,
which
were
88
in
number
when
they
were
listed
as
endangered
in
2005
and
have
decreased
further
since
then.
The
birth
of
the
new
orca,
which
was
seen
for
the
first
time
by
researchers
on
Saturday,
brings
the
population
to
73.
“It's
a
bit
of
a
nail-biter
right
now,”
said
Dr.
Deborah
Giles,
a
whale
researcher.
I
can't
help
but
be
thrilled
that
she
had
this
baby
and
this
baby
didn't
die
right
away.
Everybody
is
worried
and
on
pins
and
needles,
wondering
if
this
calf
is
going
to
make
it.
The
Southern
Resident
population
of
orcas,
which
are
also
known
as
killer
whales,
largely
stay
near
Washington
State
and
British
Columbia.
The
whales
have
been
struggling
to
get
through
a
variety
of
troubles-a
lack
of
high-quality
food
to
eat,
noise
pollution
from
ships
and
boats
in
their
habitat,
and
dangerous
pollutants
that
make
their
way
up
the
food
chain
to
them.
Many
of
the
population's
pregnancies
35
fail,
and
about
40
percent
of
the
calves
die
in
their
first
year.
J35
had
a
calf
in
2018
that
died
shortly
after
birth
off
the
coast
of
Victoria,
British
Columbia.
The
mother
continued
to
carry
the
calf,
pushing
it
through
the
water
and
repeatedly
diving
deep
to
get
it
when
it
fell
away.
Orcas
sometimes
do
that
for
a
little
while,
but
J35's
journey
of
grief
lasted
17days
and
covered
about
1,000
miles,
attracting
wide
attention
at
a
moment
when
government
agencies
were
attempting
to
change
the
population's
downward
trend.
Ken
Balcomb,
founding
director
of
the
Centre
for
Whale
Research,
documented
the
newest
calf,
listed
now
as
J57,
in
the
Strait
of
Juan
de
Fuca.
Mr.
Balcomb
said
he
was
hopeful
that
recent
efforts
could
bring
back
more
Chinook
salmon,
the
primary
food
source
for
the
Southern
Resident
orcas.
He
pointed
to
the
removal
of
a
dam
on
the
Elwha
River,
which
empties
into
the
strait,
as
a
possible
turning
point.

As
data
and
identity
theft
becomes
more
and
more
common,
the
market
is
growing
for
biometric(生物测量)
technologies—like
fingerprint
scans—to
keep
others
out
of
private
e-spaces.
At
present,
these
technologies
are
still
expensive,
though.
Researchers
from
Georgia
Tech
say
that
they
have
come
up
with
a
low-cost
device(装置)
that
gets
around
this
problem:
a
smart
keyboard.
This
smart
keyboard
precisely
measures
the
cadence(节奏)
with
which
one
types
and
the
pressure
fingers
apply
to
each
key.
The
keyboard
could
offer
a
strong
layer
of
security
by
analyzing
things
like
the
force
of
a
user’s
typing
and
the
time
between
key
presses.
These
patterns
are
unique
to
each
person.
Thus,
the
keyboard
can
determine
people’s
identities,
and
by
extension,
whether
they
should
be
given
access
to
the
computer
it’s
connected
to—regardless
of
whether
someone
gets
the
password
right.
It
also
doesn’t
require
a
new
type
of
technology
that
people
aren’t
already
familiar
with.
Everybody
uses
a
keyboard
and
everybody
types
differently.
In
a
study
describing
the
technology,
the
researchers
had
100
volunteers
type
the
word
“touch”
four
times
using
the
smart
keyboard.
Data
collected
from
the
device
could
be
used
to
recognize
different
participants
based
on
how
they
typed,
with
very
low
error
rates.
The
researchers
say
that
the
keyboard
should
be
pretty
straightforward
to
commercialize
and
is
mostly
made
of
inexpensive,
plastic-like
parts.
The
team
hopes
to
make
it
to
market
in
the
near
future.
4.
Why
do
the
researchers
develop
the
smart
keyboard?
A.
To
reduce
pressure
on
keys.
B.
To
improve
accuracy
in
typing.
C.
To
replace
the
password
system.
D.
To
cut
the
cost
of
e-space
protection.
5.
What
makes
the
invention
of
the
smart
keyboard
possible?
A.
Computers
are
much
easier
to
operate.
B.
Fingerprint
scanning
techniques
develop
fast.
C.
Typing
patterns
vary
from
person
to
person.
D.
Data
security
measures
are
guaranteed.
6.
What
do
the
researchers
expect
of
the
smart
keyboard?
A.
It’ll
be
environment-friendly.
B.
It’ll
reach
consumers
soon.
C.
It’ll
be
made
of
plastics.
D.
It’ll
help
speed
up
typing.
7.
Where
is
this
text
most
likely
from?
A.
A
diary.
B.
A
guidebook
C.
A
novel.
D.
A
magazine.
【答案】4.
D
5.
C
6.

While
famous

the
designs
of
landmark
buildings
in
China
such
as
the
new

and
the
National

many
excellent
Chinese
architects
are
making
great
efforts
to
take
the
center
stage.
Their
efforts
have
been
proven
fruitful.
Wang

a
49-year-old
Chinese
architect,
won
the
2012
Pritzker
Architecture
Prize
—
which
is
often
referred
to
as
the
Nobel
Prize
in
architecture
—
on

Chinese

this
award.
Wang

Academy
of

(CAA).
His

is
located
at
the
Xiangshan
campus(校园)
of
the

Many

on
the
campus
are
his
original
creations.
The
style
of
the

quite
different
from
that
of
most
Chinese
universities.
Many
visitors
were

by
the
complex

The

Wang
collected
more
than
7
million
abandoned

of
different
ages.
He
asked
the
workers
to
use
traditional
techniques
to
make
the

roofs
and
corridors.
This
creation
attracted
a
lot
of
attention
thanks
to
its
mixture
of
modern
and
traditional
Chinese
elements(元素).
Wang’s
works
show
a
deep
understanding
of
modern
architecture
and
a
good
knowledge
of
traditions.
Through
such
a
balance,
he
had
created
a
new
type
of
Chinese
architecture,
said
Tadao
Ando,
the
winner
of
the
1995
Pritzker
Prize.
Wang
believes
traditions
should
not
be
sealed
in
glass
boxes
at
museums.
"That
is
only
evidence
that
traditions
once
existed,"
he
said.
"Many
Chinese
people
have
a
misunderstanding
of
traditions.
They
think
tradition
means
old
things
from
the
past.
In
fact,
tradition
also
refers
to
the
things
that
have
been
developing
and
that
are
still
being
created,
"
he
said.
"Today,
many
Chinese
people
are
learning
Western
styles
and
theories
rather
than
focusing
on
Chinese
traditions.
Many
people
tend
to
talk
about
traditions
without
knowing
what
they
really
are,
"
said
Wang.
The
study
of
traditions
should
be
combined
with
practice.
Otherwise,
the
recreation
of
traditions
would
be
artificial
and
empty,
he
said.

【点睛】根据事实细节,推断合理信息。推理题要求在理解原文表面文字信息的基础上,作出一定判断和推论,从而得到文章的隐含意义和深层意义。推理题所涉及的内容可能是文中某一句话,也可是某几句话,但做题的指导思想都是以文字信息为依据,既不能做出在原文中找不到文字根据的推理,也不能根据表面文字信息做多步推理。也就是说,要做到判断有据,
推论有理,忠实原文。切忌用自己的观点代替作者的本意,切忌片面思考,得出片面结论。
此题的第一小题和第四小题为推理判断题。第1题根据第二段第二句可知Wang
Shu
获得2012年普利策奖,相当于建筑界的诺贝尔奖,再根据第三句他是第一个获此奖的中国人可知,中国建筑现在得到了国际认可,因得到认可才能获奖。此题的解题关键时根据原文的两个信息句进行的判断,而ACD原文中没有提及。

More

5,450

have
burned
across
California
in
the
past
two
weeks,
as
firefighters
continue
to
battle
some
of
the
state’s
worst
wildfires.
Meanwhile,
the
southern
states
of
the
US
have
experienced
their
first
devastating
hurricane
this
year.
The
California
fires
include
some
that
rank
among
the
largest
ever
seen
in
the
state.
They
followed
a
heatwave
that
caused
blackouts,
with
Death
Valley
National
Park
hitting
54.4℃
in
August,
the
highest
temperature
ever
recorded
on
Earth.
“Exceptionally
hot
weather
over
the
past
two
weeks
certainly
played
an
important
role
in
drying
out
vegetation
to
this
extreme
degree,”
says
Daniel
Swain
at
the
University
of
California,
Los
Angeles.
But
the
drying
of
fuel
also
started
earlier,
he
notes.
Last
winter
was
dry
in
north
California,
and
spring
brought
heatwaves.
There
are
several
unusual
aspects
to
the
current
fires.
They
expanded
dramatically
in
the
absence
of
the
usual
driver
for
large
and
fast-moving
fires
in
the
state:
powerful,
dry
winds.
“That
makes
the
enormous
area
burned
in
such
a
short
time
all
the
more
astonishing,
since
they’re
essentially
spreading
on
account
of
their
own
intensity,”
says
Swain.
The
ignition
(点火)
of
fires
by
dry
lightning
is
also
rare
for
the
region,
says
Stephen
Pyne
at
Arizona
State
University.
He
says
this
is
California’s
fourth
major
fire
year
in
a
row,
when
historically
the
state
has
seen
between
seven
and
12
years
between
big
fire
seasons.
In
the
Gulf
of
Mexico,
it
is
severe
hurricanes
that
are
the
problem.
Hurricane
Laura
made
landfall
in
the
US
on
Thursday
27
August
amid
official
warnings
of
an
“unsurvivable”
storm
surge
(风暴潮),
widespread
flooding
and
catastrophic
wind
damage.
The
storm
is
the
first
of
four
hurricanes
in
the
Atlantic
this
year.
About
four-fifths
of
oil
and
gas
production
in
the
Gulf
of
Mexico
has
been
shut
down.
The
energy
heartland
of
the
south-western
US
was
previously
battered
by
Hurricane
Harvey
in
2017.
Researchers
later
found
that
the
heavy
rainfall
from
the
storm
was
made
three
times
more
likely
by
climate
change.
Climate
change
is
almost
certainly
at
work
in
California
too.
“It
is
perfectly
clear
that
climate
change
is
increasing
the
likelihood
and
intensity
of
heatwaves
in
California,”
says
Swain.
Although
the
California
Department
of
Forestry
and
Fire
Protection
had
14,000
people
fighting
the
fires,
observers
say
it
is
impossible
to
have
enough
crews
to
stop
fires
this
big.
Authorities
last
month
agreed
a
five-year
plan
to
do
just
that.
With
climate
change
locked
in
for
the
next
30
years,
the
long-term
answer
is
to
reduce
carbon
emissions
(碳排放),
says
Thomas
Smith
at
the
London
School
of
Economics.

expanded
dramatically
in
the
absence
of
the
usual

ignition
of
fires
by
dry
lightning
is
also
rare
for
the
region,(干闪电引发火灾在该地区也很罕见)”可知,无雨干闪电也是最近加州大火的部分原因。这也是这场大火的非同寻常之处。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第七段首“The

gas
production
in
the
Gulf
of
Mexico
has
been
shut
down.(这场风暴是今年大西洋四场飓风中的第一次。墨西哥湾大约五分之四的石油和天然气生产已经停止。)”可知飓风Laura破坏很严重,影响了石油和天然气的生产。故选A项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Although
the
California
Department
of
Forestry
and
Fire

your
comprehension.(找一门最适合你的语言课程来提高你的理解力)”可知,上文提到一些在线教育资源提供免费的基础语言课程,后文则说找到最适合自己的语言课程,可知本句的内容是关于在网上找提供语言课程资源,G选项中language
courses对应后文中a
language
course。故G选项“其他网站,如大学,提供综合语言课程的价格较低”符合语境,故选G。
【17题详解】
根据后文“Online,

dead
calf
has
become
a
mother
once
again.
The
orca,
identified
by
researchers
as
J35
and
also
known
as
Tahlequah,
became
a
symbol
in
2018
of
the
difficult
situation
of
the
Southern
Resident
whales,
which
were
88
in
number
when
they
were
listed
as
endangered
in
2005
and
have
decreased
further
since
then.
The
birth
of
the
new
orca,
which
was
seen
for
the
first
time
by
researchers
on
Saturday,
brings
the
population
to
73.
“It's
a
bit
of
a
nail-biter
right
now,”
said
Dr.
Deborah
Giles,
a
whale
researcher.
I
can't
help
but
be
thrilled
that
she
had
this
baby
and
this
baby
didn't
die
right
away.
Everybody
is
worried
and
on
pins
and
needles,
wondering
if
this
calf
is
going
to
make
it.
The
Southern
Resident
population
of
orcas,
which
are
also
known
as
killer
whales,
largely
stay
near
Washington
State
and
British
Columbia.
The
whales
have
been
struggling
to
get
through
a
variety
of
troubles-a
lack
of
high-quality
food
to
eat,
noise
pollution
from
ships
and
boats
in
their
habitat,
and
dangerous
pollutants
that
make
their
way
up
the
food
chain
to
them.
Many
of
the
population's
pregnancies
35
fail,
and
about
40
percent
of
the
calves
die
in
their
first
year.
J35
had
a
calf
in
2018
that
died
shortly
after
birth
off
the
coast
of
Victoria,
British
Columbia.
The
mother
continued
to
carry
the
calf,
pushing
it
through
the
water
and
repeatedly
diving
deep
to
get
it
when
it
fell
away.
Orcas
sometimes
do
that
for
a
little
while,
but
J35's
journey
of
grief
lasted
17days
and
covered
about
1,000
miles,
attracting
wide
attention
at
a
moment
when
government
agencies
were
attempting
to
change
the
population's
downward
trend.
Ken
Balcomb,
founding
director
of
the
Centre
for
Whale
Research,
documented
the
newest
calf,
listed
now
as
J57,
in
the
Strait
of
Juan
de
Fuca.
Mr.
Balcomb
said
he
was
hopeful
that
recent
efforts
could
bring
back
more
Chinook
salmon,
the
primary
food
source
for
the
Southern
Resident
orcas.
He
pointed
to
the
removal
of
a
dam
on
the
Elwha
River,
which
empties
into
the
strait,
as
a
possible
turning
point.
1.
What
can
be
learned
about
J35?
A.
She
once
refused
to
part
from
her
dead
baby.
B.
She
went
through
great
difficulty
in
order
to
survive.
C.
She
once
received
loving
care
and
attention
from
researchers.
D.
She
looked
different
from
the
other
Southern
resident
whale
2.
How
do
the
researchers
feel
about
the
new
calf?
A.
Relieved.
B.
Anxious.
C.
Puzzled.
D.
Proud.
3.
What
did
Ken
Balcomb
talk
about
in
the
last
paragraph?
A.
How
the
newest
calf
was
named.
B.
The
main
habitat
for
Southern
Resident
orcas.
C.
How
the
dam
on
the
Elwha
River
was
removed.
D.
The
measures
for
helping
Southern
Resident
survive.

As
data
and
identity
theft
becomes
more
and
more
common,
the
market
is
growing
for
biometric(生物测量)
technologies—like
fingerprint
scans—to
keep
others
out
of
private
e-spaces.
At
present,
these
technologies
are
still
expensive,
though.
Researchers
from
Georgia
Tech
say
that
they
have
come
up
with
a
low-cost
device(装置)
that
gets
around
this
problem:
a
smart
keyboard.
This
smart
keyboard
precisely
measures
the
cadence(节奏)
with
which
one
types
and
the
pressure
fingers
apply
to
each
key.
The
keyboard
could
offer
a
strong
layer
of
security
by
analyzing
things
like
the
force
of
a
user’s
typing
and
the
time
between
key
presses.
These
patterns
are
unique
to
each
person.
Thus,
the
keyboard
can
determine
people’s
identities,
and
by
extension,
whether
they
should
be
given
access
to
the
computer
it’s
connected
to—regardless
of
whether
someone
gets
the
password
right.
It
also
doesn’t
require
a
new
type
of
technology
that
people
aren’t
already
familiar
with.
Everybody
uses
a
keyboard
and
everybody
types
differently.
In
a
study
describing
the
technology,
the
researchers
had
100
volunteers
type
the
word
“touch”
four
times
using
the
smart
keyboard.
Data
collected
from
the
device
could
be
used
to
recognize
different
participants
based
on
how
they
typed,
with
very
low
error
rates.
The
researchers
say
that
the
keyboard
should
be
pretty
straightforward
to
commercialize
and
is
mostly
made
of
inexpensive,
plastic-like
parts.
The
team
hopes
to
make
it
to
market
in
the
near
future.
4.
Why
do
the
researchers
develop
the
smart
keyboard?
A.
To
reduce
pressure
on
keys.
B.
To
improve
accuracy
in
typing.
C.
To
replace
the
password
system.
D.
To
cut
the
cost
of
e-space
protection.
5.
What
makes
the
invention
of
the
smart
keyboard
possible?
A.
Computers
are
much
easier
to
operate.
B.
Fingerprint
scanning
techniques
develop
fast.
C.
Typing
patterns
vary
from
person
to
person.
D.
Data
security
measures
are
guaranteed.
6.
What
do
the
researchers
expect
of
the
smart
keyboard?
A.
It’ll
be
environment-friendly.
B.
It’ll
reach
consumers
soon.
C.
It’ll
be
made
of
plastics.
D.
It’ll
help
speed
up
typing.
7.
Where
is
this
text
most
likely

C.
A
novel.
D.

While
famous
foreign
architects
are
invited
to
lead
the
designs
of
landmark
buildings
in
China
such
as
the
new
CCTV
tower
and
the
National
Center
for
the
Performing
Arts,
many
excellent
Chinese
architects
are
making
great
efforts
to
take
the
center
stage.
Their
efforts
have
been
proven
fruitful.
Wang
Shu,
a
49-year-old
Chinese
architect,
won
the
2012
Pritzker
Architecture
Prize
—
which
is
often
referred
to
as
the
Nobel
Prize
in
architecture
—
on
February
28.
He
is
the
first
Chinese
citizen
to
win
this
award.
Wang
serves
as
head
of
the
Architecture
Department
at
the
China
Academy
of
Art
(CAA).
His
office
is
located
at
the
Xiangshan
campus(校园)
of
the
university
in
Hangzhou,
Zhejiang
Province.
Many
buildings
on
the
campus
are
his
original
creations.
The
style
of
the
campus
is
quite
different
from
that
of
most
Chinese
universities.
Many
visitors
were
amazed
by
the
complex
architectural
space
and
abundant
building
types.
The
curves(曲线)
of
the
buildings
perfectly
match
the
rise
and
fall
of
hills,
forming
a
unique
view.
Wang
collected
more
than
7
million
abandoned
bricks
of
different
ages.
He
asked
the
workers
to
use
traditional
techniques
to
make
the
bricks
into
walls,
roofs
and
corridors.
This
creation
attracted
a
lot
of
attention
thanks
to
its
mixture
of
modern
and
traditional
Chinese
elements(元素).
Wang’s
works
show
a
deep
understanding
of
modern
architecture
and
a
good
knowledge
of
traditions.
Through
such
a
balance,
he
had
created
a
new
type
of
Chinese
architecture,
said
Tadao
Ando,
the
winner
of
the
1995
Pritzker
Prize.
Wang
believes
traditions
should
not
be
sealed
in
glass
boxes
at
museums.
"That
is
only
evidence
that
traditions
once
existed,"
he
said.
"Many
Chinese
people
have
a
misunderstanding
of
traditions.
They
think
tradition
means
old
things
from
the
past.
In
fact,
tradition
also
refers
to
the
things
that
have
been
developing
and
that
are
still
being
created,
"
he
said.
"Today,
many
Chinese
people
are
learning
Western
styles
and
theories
rather
than
focusing
on
Chinese
traditions.
Many
people
tend
to
talk
about
traditions
without
knowing
what
they
really
are,
"
said
Wang.
The
study
of
traditions
should
be
combined
with
practice.
Otherwise
the
recreation
of
traditions
would
be
artificial
and
empty,
he
said.

Wang’s
winning
of
the
prize
means
that
Chinese
architects
are
___________.
A.
following
the
latest
world
trend
B.
getting
international
recognition
C.
working
harder
than
ever
before
D.
relying
on
foreign
architects
9.
What
impressed
visitors
to
the
CAA
Xiangshan
campus
most?
A.
Its
hilly
environment.
B.
Its
large
size.
C.
Its
unique
style.
D.
Its
diverse
functions.
10.
What
made
Wang’s
architectural
design
a
success?
A.
The
mixture
of
different
shapes.
B.
The
balance
of
East
and
West.
C.
The
use
of
popular
techniques.
D.
The

11.
What
should
we
do
about
Chinese
traditions
according
to
Wang?
A.
Spread
them
to
the
world.
B.
Preserve
them
at
museums.
C.
Teach
them
in
universities.
D.
Recreate
them

More
than
5,450
square
kilometres
have
burned
across
California
in
the
past
two
weeks,
as
firefighters
continue
to
battle
some
of
the
state’s
worst
wildfires.
Meanwhile,
the
southern
states
of
the
US
have
experienced
their
first
devastating
hurricane
this
year.
The
California
fires
include
some
that
rank
among
the
largest
ever
seen
in
the
state.
They
followed
a
heatwave
that
caused
blackouts,
with
Death
Valley
National
Park
hitting
54.4℃
in
August,
the
highest
temperature
ever
recorded
on
Earth.
“Exceptionally
hot
weather
over
the
past
two
weeks
certainly
played
an
important
role
in
drying
out
vegetation
to
this
extreme
degree,”
says
Daniel
Swain
at
the
University
of
California,
Los
Angeles.
But
the
drying
of
fuel
also
started
earlier,
he
notes.
Last
winter
was
dry
in
north
California,
and
spring
brought
heatwaves.
There
are
several
unusual
aspects
to
the
current
fires.
They
expanded
dramatically
in
the
absence
of
the
usual
driver
for
large
and
fast-moving
fires
in
the
state:
powerful,
dry
winds.
“That
makes
the
enormous
area
burned
in
such
a
short
time
all
the
more
astonishing,
since
they’re
essentially
spreading
on
account
of
their
own
intensity,”
says
Swain.
The
ignition
(点火)
of
fires
by
dry
lightning
is
also
rare
for
the
region,
says
Stephen
Pyne
at
Arizona
State
University.
He
says
this
is
California’s
fourth
major
fire
year
in
a
row,
when
historically
the
state
has
seen
between
seven
and
12
years
between
big
fire
seasons.
In
the
Gulf
of
Mexico,
it
is
severe
hurricanes
that
are
the
problem.
Hurricane
Laura
made
landfall
in
the
US
on
Thursday
27
August
amid
official
warnings
of
an
“unsurvivable”
storm
surge
(风暴潮),
widespread
flooding
and
catastrophic
wind
damage.
The
storm
is
the
first
of
four
hurricanes
in
the
Atlantic
this
year.
About
four-fifths
of
oil
and
gas
production
in
the
Gulf
of
Mexico
has
been
shut
down.
The
energy
heartland
of
the
south-western
US
was
previously
battered
by
Hurricane
Harvey
in
2017.
Researchers
later
found
that
the
heavy
rainfall
from
the
storm
was
made
three
times
more
likely
by
climate
change.
Climate
change
is
almost
certainly
at
work
in
California
too.
“It
is
perfectly
clear
that
climate
change
is
increasing
the
likelihood
and
intensity
of
heatwaves
in
California,”
says
Swain.
Although
the
California
Department
of
Forestry
and
Fire
Protection
had
14,000
people
fighting
the
fires,
observers
say
it
is
impossible
to
have
enough
crews
to
stop
fires
this
big.
Authorities
last
month
agreed
a
five-year
plan
to
do
just
that.
With
climate
change
locked
in
for
the
next
30
years,
the
long-term
answer
is
to
reduce
carbon
emissions
(碳排放),
says
Thomas
Smith
at
the
London
School
of
Economics.

第二节(满分25分)
47.
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150左右。
I
live
in
an
old
two-story
home
in
Newark.
My
neighbors
are
mostly
retired
people
with
perfect
yards.One
of
the
retirees,Joe
Perez,lives
on
the
corner.Because
of
our
time
together
last
summer,
he
and
I
have
built
a
special
relationship.
At
the
start
of
the
summer,Joe
and
I
didn't
hit
it
off
too
well.He
was
very
picky
about
his
yard.
Every
morning
he
was
doing
something
to
make
the
lawn
look
better.
If
we
played
around
and
stepped
on
the
grass,
Joe
would
yell
at
us
from
his
front
porch
(门廊)。
Through
mid-July
his
yard
was
perfect,
but
then
I
noticed
some
changes.
I
didn't
see
Joe
outside
as
much.
His
grass
was
getting
brown
and
untidy,
and
some
weeds
were
growing
in
his
flower
beds.
It
wasn't
like
Joe
to
let
things
go.
I
didn't
think
much
about
it,
but
when
I
walked
by
his
place,I
wondered
why
he
wasn't
taking
care
of
his
yard.
One
day
I
was
sitting
on
the
curb
waiting
for
one
of
my
friends
to
show
up
when
Joe
came
out
on
the
porch.
I
expected
him
to
yell
at
me
for
sitting
on
his
grass.
Instead,
he
swayed
back
and
forth.Then
he
fell
down!
I
ran
to
my
house
and
dialed
911.
“My
neighbor,Mr
Perez,just
passed
out!
He
lives
on
the
corner
of
Garden
and
Mills,"
I
blurted.
Then
I
hurried
back
to
the
porch
to
see
what
I
could
do.
Joe
was
awake,
but
he
was
as
white
as
a
ghost.He
started
blankly
at
me.
“W-What
happened
to
me?"he
mumbled.
“You
passed
out,
Mr
Perez,”
I
said,
trying
to
catch
my
breath.
“But
help
is
on
its
way,"
The
paramedics
came
and
took
Joe
to
the
emergency
room.
It
turned
out
that
Joe
had
been
forgetting
to
take
his
blood
pressure
medication.
A
doctor
gave
Joe
some
medicine
and
examined
him
carefully.
Paragraph
1:
Then
Joe
was
allowed
to
go
home.

Paragraph
2:
Joe
found
lots
of
things
I
could
do.
