As our boat moves quickly up and down in a windy ice-filled small bay, I try to judge the health condition of the polar bear (北极熊)in front of me. We are in Franz Josef Land, a remote part of Russia between the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean.
While offshore bears follow the sea ice, hunting seals (海豹)on ice all year round, bears that live by the sea spend their summers on land and are forced to search for whatever they can find. Relying on low-calorie meals such as the eggs of nesting seabirds, it is harder for these bears to pack on the pounds. Researchers recently found that offshore bears around the Barents Sea are some of the most polluted animals on Earth. This is a direct consequence of the seals they feed on.
Over a period of 14 years' study, Heli Routti from the Norwegian Polar Institute found that offshore female bears were in a better health, having greater body weight, than female bears by the sea, but on average their levels of pollutants called PFASs are 33 percent higher.
PFASs are used to make industrial products which are poisonous and degrade (降解)very slowly. These pollutants find their way to the Arctic through air, where they fall in snow and gradually add up in the ice. As the ice melts every summer, the PFASs go into the water, where they enter the food chain. They eventually make their way into the fat that keeps seals warm and from there into the bears that eat them.
During my 15 days in Franz Josef Land, I saw five bears, all living by the sea. Each looked relatively healthy. There are signs that these bears are dealing with the global-warming-caused ice loss relatively well. “The bears, so far, seem to be handling the sea ice loss," says Andrew Derocher at the University of Alberta, who worked with Routti on the study, "But I'm sure that's going to change if the speed of ice loss increases sharply in the area."
24. From the text we can learn polar bears living by the sea .
A. eat seals on ice all year round
B. look for food on land in summer
C. become the most polluted animals on Earth
D. stay on the ice in summer to avoid hot weather

A. Put on weight. B. Move around.
C. Fight against pollution. D. Live alone.
26. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The rate of PFASs' degradation. B. The effects of PFASs on the environment.
C. The process of PFASs' entering polar bears. D. The application of PFASs in modem industry.
27. According to Andrew Derocher, what will happen if the sea ice loss increases?
A. More pollutants may go into the air. B. It will make no difference to bears.
C. The death rate of seals may increase. D. Bears might fail to adapt to the change.

If you want to learn a language, try sleeping on it. This is the advice from researchers at Swansea University who are studying the interaction between sleep patterns, dreaming and memory consolidation (记忆巩固)—the process for laying down memories in the brain more securely.
In a study to be published in Journal of Sleep Research, the scientists looked at how sleep and the value attached to pieces of information a fleet their memorability. Participants in the study slept in a specially designed lab, while their brain activity was being monitored.
Native English speakers who had recently arrived in Wales had to memorize Welsh words and were tested on them 12 hours later. One group had to remember the information during the daytime, while the other slept on it in the lab.
The sleepers performed much better in a test of their newly acquired vocabulary—and caring about the Welsh language further improved performance.
Related work in the sleep lab, presented at the British Science Festival, aims to understand whether they are a byproduct of other events occurring during sleep. To understand the timing and content of dreams, the team analyzed the dreams participants reported in their own words, immediately on being woken.
This research found that the likelihood of experiencing a dream is particularly high—about 80 per cent during REM sleep. This part of the sleep cycle, characterized by rapid eye movements, is thought to play an important role in memory consolidation.
Electrical activity in the brain varies significantly at different stages of sleep. This helped researchers to monitor the length and quality of sleep, and to wake participants at particular points in the sleep cycle.
The research found daytime events were more likely to be formed into dreams with a one-day delay and to happen again and again after another five to seven nights. This is called the dream-lag effect.
28. What is the study mentioned in the text mainly about?
A. The way to learn a language. B. The effect sleep has on memory.
C. The experiment in a specially designed lab. D. The phenomenon of dream-lag effect.
29. What does the underlined word "them" in the 3rd paragraph refer to?
A. The sleepers. B. The Welsh words.
C. The researchers. D. The native English speakers.
30. What do we know about REM sleep?
A. It always comes with a dream. B. It is harmful to humans.
C. It is important to memory consolidation. D. It lasts throughout the night.
31. From which section of a magazine is the text most probably taken?
A. Economy. B. Entertainment. C. Society. D. Science.
D
She was the 19th-century founder of modem nursing, known for her continuous care of wounded soldiers in the Crimean War. In an earlier age of contagion (接触性传染),she was far ahead of her time in realizing that cleanliness, fresh air and open-air exercise helped patients recover from injury and disease.
Now an unpublished letter that Florence Nightingale received as a teenager from her father shows that he was a major inspiration in shaping her approach to a healthy mind and body.
In 1835, William Nightingale wrote to his daughter setting out a routine for keeping fit. "Exercise for 10 minutes every day before breakfast. Before you dress do the exercise of the arms 20 times. In the course of the day, 20 minutes' exercise must be done and if not done well, another 10 minutes should be added ... Some new poetry to be learned and two things prepared for this evening. If any of these things aren't finished, you will work them up the next day."
The letter will feature in a book, Florence Nightingale at Home, to be published in November. The letter is among the unpublished materials on which the book's four authors have drawn and it offers new insights into her pioneering work.
Nightingale had a happy childhood at a time of widespread child labor and high baby death rates when most people lived in small, unclean houses and hospitals were dirty and badly run with many patients having little hope of coming out alive. When Nightingale first became famous, people were amazed at the idea that someone used to living in a country house would give that up in order to nurse the poor. Her own parents were also shocked to learn that she wanted to become a nurse in an age when nurses were thought of as morally wrong.
William Nightingale's 1835 letter was among the unpublished materials unearthed from piles of boxes at Claydon House where Nightingale's sister lived, now a National Trust property.
32. Why did Florence Nightingale's father write the letter to her?
A. To ensure her a happy childhood.
B. To plan a road to success for her.
C. To inspire her to build a healthy mind and body.
D. To make her the founder of the modem nursing.
33. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Florence Nightingale was a soldier in the Crimean War.
B. Florence Nightingale disliked his father's way of education.
C. Most people in Florence Nightingale's time suffered a lot.
D. Florence Nightingale's parents were amazed at her decision.
34. Which of the following best describes Florence Nightingale?
A. Curious and patient. B. Determined and caring.
C. Attractive and honest. D. Humorous and hardworking.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The strictness of a great father. B. The founder of modem nursing.
C. A review of Florence Nightingale at Home. D. A significant letter to Nightingale.

I was a writer, but yesterday the boss told me he decided to fire me. That was wrong, because I created many great articles for our company. I didn't want to let the news upset my children, so I invited my wife to a restaurant we often went to.
I walked into the restaurant, surprised by how empty it was. Not too long after, I saw Carrie walk in. “Where are the kids?” I asked. "At Mother's." Carrie said. "So what did you want to tell me?" she asked curiously. "Well when I tell you, you can't break down." I said. She nodded hesitantly.
“Well, ... my boss said ...he would fire me if I couldn't come up with a good story.” "What! You've been working there for 5 years since your best friend Jack left there. Although later Jack tried to invite you to work with him, you refused. You could basically run the place!” She shouted. "I know, I know.” "How can he just fire you like Jack?” She looked at me with worry in her eyes. "What about the kids? How will we pay for the house? How will we ..." I cut her words off and promised. "I'll find a new job. Any job will do as long as it pays." Suddenly a man across the diner said, "My friend is looking for a new writer ... someone that can really tell and show the story.” "Where can I find him?” I asked. "He's got a shop down the street with a big yellow sign on the top." he says. "Thank you so much!" Carrie said thankfully as we left the restaurant.
“There!” Carrie pointed to a big yellow sign reading, "The Daily Dispatch". "I've heard about this place!” I said turning to Carrie. t4This is the worst newspaper company here!” I complained. “Well I guess I should go in for an interview. A bad job is better than none." I sighed. "George, I don't want you to do something you hate." “Well at least I can make some money if I have a job." said.

M: Well, I’ve had a look in this guide and, er, I think these restaurants look quite good. What do you think? W: Well, they all look nice ... but I went to Kitchen 108 with my friends recently.
M: OK, then, uh, what about Alba’s?
W: I’ve heard the food there is very good, but it’s a long way from here.
M: How about Betty’s Farm then?
W: It has great reviews on the Internet. Let’s go there.

M: Hello?
W: Hey, Michael. It’s Jane. I just got a new pet rabbit.
M: Why did you get a rabbit? I don’t think rabbits are interesting.
W: But I think it’s so cute. Its body is white and it feels soft.
M: Jane, do you even know how to feed a rabbit?
W: Sure. It likes eating grass, rabbit food and other green vegetables like lettuce. Hey, I still haven’t named it yet.
Let’s think of a name together。
M: OK.

M: Hi, Rachel, have you got any plans for the weekend?
W: No, not really. Just work. I’ve got a lot to do in the shop this week because we’re going to a wedding next weekend.
M: Oh, the shop? Are you the manager, or ...
W: Well, not really—it’s my shop.
M: Wow. That’s amazing! Do you work alone?
W: No, I have someone to help me—Tina. She works in the shop for a few hours every day after class.
M: Oh, that’s good.
W: How about you? What do you do?
M: Oh, marketing. A stressful job!
W: Same as Mary. She works in marketing, too.

Text 9
W: So, when I get to Jakarta, what should I do?
M: I’m not sure. I mean, I left there about ten years ago and it’s probably all changed now.
W: So, I think I’ll just get a taxi from the airport to the hotel.
M: You could, but I think you should take the bus to save money.
W: I suppose so. Is that what you did?
M: Well, I was going to Jakarta to work, so someone met me with a car and drove me into the center of town.
W: So, what did you see after you left the airport?
M: Well, the first thing I saw was a traffic jam! And a storm!
W: Oh no! Really?
M: Yes, quite often in the spring, the rainy season. There’s suddenly a storm with heavy rain and lightning.

Text 10
Welcome to my vlog. I’m on my way to Lane Cove where about 20 whales can’t get back out to sea again.
When I get there, I’m meeting Sam from the Sea Life Service. I’m going to help Sam and a team of local people to save these whales.
OK, I’ve just arrived and talked to Sam. So far about 30 people have turned up and more are coming. If more people come, we’ll have a better chance of succeeding.
I’m in a team of four people and we’re looking after just one poor whale. Sam says it’s female, and we’ve covered her with wet cloths and we’re pouring water over her to keep her cool. We have to be careful where we put the cloth to make sure that she can breathe. Sam says our whale is in good condition and he thinks she’ll survive. I begin to help dig up the sand around the whale to make a hole. When the water comes in, it’ll fill up the hole.
Yes! Success! We pushed and pushed and our whale fought back a bit, then she took off. What a great feeling!
She’s swimming back out to sea. I think she’s going to be OK.
