After finishing a meal at an American Chinese restaurant you probably expect to receive a handful of fortune cookies after you pay the bill. Fortune cookies are in Chinese restaurants throughout the United States. It抯 rather satisfying to crack open a cookie at the end of your meal and read your lucky fortune on the slip of paper inside.
The exact origin of the fortune cookie is unknown. It is thought that the tasty snack was first introduced into San Francisco in 1914, after an immigrant began distributing the cookie with 搕hank you notes in them. These 搕hank you notes were intended as symbols of appreciation for friends who stood with him through the economic hardship and discrimination of his early life in America.
There is an alternate origin story. Los Angeles is regarded as the site of the fortune cookie抯 invention. In this version of the story, David Jung, a Chinese immigrant residing in L. A, is thought to have created the cookie in order to uplift the spirits of the poor and homeless. In 1918, Jung handed out the cookies for free to the poor outside his shop and each cookie contained a strip of paper with an inspirational sentence printed on it.
Fortune cookies first began to gain popularity in mainstream American culture during WWII. Chinese restaurants would serve them in place of desserts, as desserts were not popular in traditional Chinese cuisine. Today fortune cookies are not tied to Chinese-American culture. In fact, the largest fortune cookie manufacturer is located in the United States and it produces 4.5 million fortune cookies a day 棗 an evidence to the modern-day popularity of the snack. However, an attempt to introduce the fortune cookie to China in 1992 was a failure, and the cookie was cited for being 搕oo American.
So the next time you break open a fortune cookie and read a fortune about the many successes you should expect in your future, remember that the conclusion to your Chinese restaurant meal may not be as Chinese as you think.
4.What do we know about fortune cookies?
A.They are as popular in China as in America.
B.They contain slips of paper with good wishes.
C.They first appeared in America during WWII.
D.They are often charged to the customers’ bill.
5.Why were fortune cookies introduced into San Francisco?
A.To make profit.
B.To express gratitude.
C.To uplift people’s spirits.
D.To help people out of hardship.
6.Which of the following sentences may be found in Jung’ s cookies?
A.The fortune you seek is in another cookie.
B.Every exit is an entrance to new experiences.
C.I’m being held prisoner by a Chinese bakery.
D.Only taste fortune cookies; disregard all others.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Symbol of Chinese Culture
B.Chinese Restaurants in America

D.Fortune cookie, Chinese or American?

In a book called Magnificent Obsession, by Lloyd C.Douglas, a description is given of people helping others but doing it secretly. When difficult problems worried an individual, friends nearby would meet to discuss possible solutions without the individual knowing their actions. When a solution was agreed upon, one or two of the friends would carry out the plan and solve the problem secretly, to the great delight of the worried individual. The helpers would stand by privately, content with their success. No reward was given to the problem solvers, not even a sincere thank you, because they were never known.
This concept is popular today but in a different way. The phrase 損ay it forward is now used when one person helps another. However, the person helped may not be able to repay the person or group that helped them. So rather than return the favor to their helpers, they are supposed to help someone else in the future, which means they pay it forward. It is a sense of responsibility which makes us want to give back in equal measure to the one who has helped us. But, in this case, the responsibility turns to helping someone in the future.
Suppose your elderly grandmother pays part of your schooling. She may tell you there is no need to repay her because it is a gift from someone who loves you very much. Nothing would please her more than to have you use her money to get a good education.
You may never be able to repay her for such a gift. However, she not only gave you some money, but she provided you with an example that you should also help other people who need it.
People with serious needs are everywhere. Many are children who need better clothes, more books and even better schools. Some are elderly people who can’t afford their medicine or a doctor’s care. Consider how you can “pay it forward” rather than pay money back to your grandmother.
8.The helpers in the book “Magnificent Obsession” were not rewarded because ________.
A.they hadn’t solved the problems thoroughly
B.they expected to be paid back in the future.
C.they were friends of the worried individual
D.they had solved the problems secretly
9.The underlined word “pay it forward” means ________.
A.to repay someone who has helped you
B.to help someone else who needs help
C.to help someone who has helped you
D.to pay someone else who needs help
10.What does the writer suggest with the example of “your elderly grandmother”?
A.We should also lend a hand to other people in need of help.
B.We should work hard to get a good education.
C.We should learn to respect our grandparents.
D.We should never forget to repay people for their help.
11.By writing the passage, the author wishes people in the world to be ________.
A.honest B.mysterious C.unselfish D.unforgettable
D
The United States has always been a country of many cultures. Before Europeans came to North America, many groups of Native Americans lived here. Different Native American groups had different cultures. The first Europeans in the United States were from England and Holland, but immigrants came from all European countries. Many people also immigrated from Asia and Africa. Sadly, many Africans were brought to the United States as slaves. Many immigrants come from Latin America too. Today, the United States has people from more cultures than ever.
In the 19th century, people spoke of the United States as a 搈elting pot. People thought that all immigrants should forget their native cultures and languages and become English-speaking Americans. They felt that people should assimilate-join American culture. However, not everyone wanted to assimilate completely. Many people tried to keep parts of their cultures, such as foods, customs, and languages. However, their children often forgot their parents or grandparents language. But most Americans, even those whose families have been here a long time, can tell the countries their relatives came from. And of course, new immigrants take great pride in their culture and language.
For all of these reasons, melting pot is no longer a good way to describe the United States. Instead, people now call the United States a 搒alad bowl. They say salad bowl because in a salad, you can still see all of the individual parts (lettuce, tomato, and so on), but all the different parts mixed together and begin to take on the flavor of one another.
12.Who are not mentioned as immigrants to America?
A.Europeans B.Asians
C.Australians D.Latin Americans
13.The underlined word “assimilate” in paragraph 2 means .
A.delight B.accept
C.challenge D.reject
14.Why is a “salad bowl” a better way to call the United States instead of a “melting pot”?
A.Immigrants love to eat salads instead of hot pot
B.Immigrants take pride in their culture and language
C.Immigrants join American culture only partially
D.Immigrants remain independent completely
15.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.America and Immigrants
B.Different Groups, Different Cultures
C.America – A Salad Bowl
D.America – A Great Country

如果是记叙文,找出when,where,who,what等基本要素。
比如第49小题he lit up and thanked us with ___ eyes,当我们感激别人的时候,是满眼泪花很激动,故选A。再如第55小题 it also gave my kids the 55 taste of helping others,帮助别人自己的内心也会感到快乐,感到甜蜜。

假定你是李华, 你的英国朋友Mike来信说他现在汉语学得不够好,不知道如何提高。请你写一封回信, 提一些关于如何学好汉语的建议。内容包括:
1. 邮件已收到;
2. 建议课内外多说多看多听汉语;建议与同学之间进行汉字听写比赛等
3. 表达希望。
Dear Mike,
I’m very pleased to hear from you. Knowing that you are having trouble learning Chinese, I’m more than glad to offer you some suggestions on how to improve it.
To begin with, it would be a good idea if you could spend more time practising listening to and speaking Chinese in and after class. As the famous saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” What’s more, you’d better read some books and watch a couple of films every week to learn how Chinese people express themselves. Besides, as far as I am concerned, having some Chinese characters dictation competitions with your classmates will be of great help to you.
I hope you will find my advice useful and I am sure you will make great progress in Chinese.

Yours, Li Hua
