【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据Ways

all
visitors,
including
our

need

a
safe
experience可知,访客必须提前在网上预订,是因为画廊旨在为参观者提供一次安全的艺术之旅。故选C项。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据Visiting

B
Gestures-such
as
pointing
or
waving-go
hand
in
hand
with
a
child's
first
words,
and
twins
lag
(滞后)behind
single
children
in
producing
and
using
those
gestures,two
studies
from
Georgia
State
University
psychology
researchers
show.
The
lag
in
gesture
among
twins
may
be
mostly
due
to
lower
parental
input,
Ozcaliskan
said.
It's
likely
that
parents
caring
for
twins
engage
in
shorter
conversations
with
their
children,
including
gesturing
less,
because
their
attention
is
divided
and
their
labor
is
doubled.However,
parents
of
single
children
used
a
greater
amount
and
diversity
of
gestures
than
parents
of
twins.
Ozcaliskan
said
she
had
grown
curious
about
gesture
because
it
had
not
yet
been
studied
among
twins.
We
have
already
known
that
twins
are
initially
at
a
disadvantage
where
language
is
concerned.
Most
of
the
time,
these
lags
are
within
the
normal
range
of
differences,
and
nothing
to
worry
about.
Almost
all
children
will
catch
up
to
each
other
by
around
age
three
and
a
half.
“However,there
was
almost
nothing
in
research
on
gesturing
among
twins,"
Ozcaliskan
said.
Babies
start
using
pointing
around
10
months,
a
few
months
before
they
produce
their
first
words.
Gesture
helps
them
convey
what
they
can't
yet
communicate
in
speech
and
prepares
the
way
for
children's
early
words.
Twins
sometimes
develop
their
own
systems
of
communication,
even
their
own
“twin
language,"
which
has
also
been
shown
to
delay
language
acquisition.
“Perhaps
it
also
delays
the
use
of
gestures.
Gesture
and
speech
together
form
a
closely
integrated
system
in
a
child's
development,
and
a
child's
first
gestures
often
precede
their
first
attempts
at
speech,"
Ozcaliskan
said.
"Gesture
is
a
very
powerful
tool,"
she
said.
“Pay
attention
to
your
child's
gestures,
and
then
provide
verbal(言语的)
descriptions
to
help
their
language
development,
such
as
naming
objects
when
children
point
to
them."
4.
What
mainly
causes
twins
to
produce
and
use
fewer
gestures?
A.
Reduced
parental
input.
B.
Undivided
parental
attention.
C.
Too
much
“twin
language".
D.
Slow
language
development.
5.
The
underlined
word
“precede"
in
Paragraph
5
probably
means
_
A.
count
on
B.
go
with
C.
come
before
D.
call
up
6.
Which
of
the
following
may
best
help
children's
language
development?
A.
When
the
child
smiles,
parents
smile
big
smiles
as
well.
B.
When
the
child
makes
a
small
mistake,
parents
ignore
it.
C.
When
the
child
points
to
a
doll,
parents
pass
it
to
him
or
her
quickly.
D.
When
the
child
points
to
a
bottle,
parents
point
to
it,
saying
“bottle".
7.
What
can
be
learned
from
the
study?
A.
Twins
fall
behind
single
children
in
early
gesturing.
B.
Twins
arc
at
a
disadvantage
in
language
of
a
lifetime.
C.
Enough
research
has
been
done
on
twins'
gesturing.
D.
Gestures
prepare
children
for
future
development.
【答案】4.
A
5.
C
6.
D
7.
A
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了双胞胎中的一个手势延迟现象,因为父母注意力被分散,所以双胞胎在一开始的手势使用会稍微延迟,同时研究证明,手势与语言的关系也很密切。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The
lag
in
gesture
among
twins
may
be
mostly
due
to
lower
parental
input,
Ozcaliskan
said.(Ozcaliskan说,双胞胎之间手势的滞后可能主要是由于父母的投入较少。)”中的lower
parental
input可知,双胞胎产生和使用更少的手势的原因是“父母投入较少”。故选A项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Gesture
helps
them
convey
what
they
can't
yet
communicate
in
speech
and
prepares
the
way
for
children's
early
words.(手势帮助他们表达他们还不能用语言交流的东西,并为儿童早期的语言准备道路。)”可知,手势在语言之前发展,故猜测划线词为“在…之前”之意。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Pay
attention
to
your
child's
gestures,
and
then
provide
verbal(言语的)
descriptions
to
help
their
language
development,
such
as
naming
objects
when
children
point
to
them."(“注意孩子的手势,然后提供口头描述来帮助他们的语言发展,比如当孩子指向物体时给它们起名字。”)”可推知,D项“当孩子指着一个瓶子时,父母指着它说‘瓶子’”的这种教育方式对儿童的语言发展最有帮助。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Gestures-such
as
pointing
or
waving-go
hand
in
hand
with
a
child's
first
words,
and
twins
lag
(滞后)behind

those
gestures,
two
studies
from
Georgia
State
University
psychology
researchers
show.(乔治亚州立大学心理学研究人员的两项研究表明,手势——比如指指点点或挥手——与孩子的第一句话手牵手,双胞胎在制作和使用这些手势方面落后于单身孩子。)”中的twins
lag
(滞后)behind
single
children可知,双胞胎在早期手势上落后于独生子女。故选A项。

Sustained
Silent
Reading
(SSR)
is
the
practice
of
providing
a
short
period
of
class
time
for
students
to
read
silently
whatever
they
choose
according
to
their
interests.SSR
programs
can
be
offered
at
actually
any
grade
level.
However,it
takes
a
great
deal
of
time,effort,and
know-how
to
put
a
successful
SSR
program
into
operation.
I
first
recognized
this
when
I
was
a
high
school
teacher
twenty
years
ago.
Though
some
of
my
students
were
happy
to
be
allowed
to
select
and
read
books
in
class,
many
never
truly
dived
into
their
reading.
I
knew
that
there
must
be
ways
to
improve
the
implementation(实施)
of
my
SSR
program,
but
I
wasn't
sure
what
they
were.
Years
later,
when
I
returned
to
the
University
of
Southern
California,
I
began
analyzing
a
large
sample
of
SSR
studies
to
determine
what
made
them
effective
and
found
that
successful
programs
shared
five
key
factors:
easy
access
to
reading
materials,
sufficiently
interesting
materials,
teachers'
encouragement,
follow-up
activities
and
reading
at
least
twice
a
week.
In
fact,
only
when
teachers
follow
specific
guidelines
do
these
programs
achieve
their
full
potential.
Having
learned
this,
I
decided
to
create
an
“ideal"
SSR
program
for
my
students
by
employing
the
five
factors
above.
At
the
same
time,
another
high
school
in
our
district
also
made
the
decision
to
offer
students
SSR
time
each
day.
However,
having
no
knowledge
of
the
five
factors,
the
teachers
simply
asked
their
students
to
“read
anything
for
fifteen
minutes."
The
result
was
that
the
students
at
my
school
outperformed
(胜过)
the
other
school
in
four
areas:
reading
comprehension,
positive
attitudes
toward
reading,
frequency
of
after-school
pleasure
reading,
and
use
of
a
wider
range
of
reading
sources.
I
shared
my
findings
with
the
other
school's
staff
members.
Since
then,
both
schools
have
experienced
the
positive
benefits
of
SSR.
Today,I
have
given
many
lectures
at
a
wide
variety
of
schools
where
teachers
are
eager
to
learn
“how-to"
methods
for
developing
programs
that
will
motivate
their
students
to
become
hooked
on
reading.They
ask
a
variety
of
excellent
questions
and
I
have
never
been
bored
of
answering
them.

We
visited
Rome
for
the
first
time
a
few
years
ago,
and
my
memories
aren't
ones
of
buildings,
statues,
or
even
the
food.
It's
the
selfie-sticks
(自拍杆)-being
sold
on
every
street
corner,
and
being
put
to
use
everywhere
we
went.
When
traveling,
people
were
photographing
themselves,
often
without
bothering
to
look
at
all
the
beauty
behind
them.
Research
shows
that
we're
distracted
by
photography.
When
we
take
pictures,
we
may
improve
our
chances
of
remembering
the
facts,
like
where
we
were
or
what
we
ate.
But
we
miss
out
on
other
details,
and
don't
see
the
“big
picture”
because
we're
too
focused
on
the
small
picture
on
our
screen.
What's
more,
if
we
rely
on
photographs
to
store
our
experiences,
we
spend
less
time
practising
the
act
of
remembering.
And
by
not
stretching
our
recall
muscles
regularly,
we
don't
strengthen
particular
memories.
As
a
result,
we
may
end
up
with
very
shallow
records
of
the
past.
And
that's
especially
true
if
we're
always
photographing
ourselves.
Selfies
reveal
little
about
the
“big
picture”-what's
happening
around
us,
or
how
we
were
really
feeling
at
the
time.
So
take
photographs
to
remind
you
of
key
details,
to
be
creative,
and
to
show
to
family
and
friends.
But
get
into
the
habit
of
capturing
experiences
with
your
mind
too.
Consciously
take
in
everything
around
you.
Use
all
your
senses,
not
just
your
eyes.
Be
aware
of
your
thoughts
and
feelings,
too.
It’s
a
great
habit
to
get
into.
You'll
experience
more
if
you're
not
fussing
with(瞎忙一气)your
phone.
You'll
create
more
durable
memories
by
returning
to
the
photos
again
and
again.
You'll
also
be
exercising
your
brain,
which
is
the
best
way
to
keep
it
working
well
for
everything.
And
in
the
process,
I
bet
you'll
discover
that
your
memory
is
by
far
the
most
interesting
lens(透镜)through
which
to
look
back
at
your
past.

【解析】
【分析】这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者谈到在游历罗马时印象最深的是自拍杆,由此论述了使用自拍杆照相对我们旅行体验的影响及如何获得最佳的体验。

Research
shows
that
we're
distracted
by
photography.”可知,研究表明,我们会被摄影分心。由此可知,第一段讲的是作者游历罗马的经历和感受,以此引起下文的反思话题而展开论述。因此第一段的目的是引入文章的主题。故选C。
【13题详解】

”可知,研究表明,我们会被摄影分心。当我们拍照时,我们更可能会记住某些细节,比如我们在哪里或我们吃了什么。但是我们忽略了其他细节,看不到“大图”,因为我们太专注于屏幕上的小图。由此可知,人们对于过去的摄影记忆不深刻的主要原因是我们忽略了“大图”。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。
此词位于最后一段句首,故它的指代内容应定位在倒数第二段。根据倒数第二段的“So

由此可知,it指代的是“用你的大脑和相机捕捉体验”。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文并根据第1题的分析可知,本篇文章内容是有关于如何让人们在旅行生活中获得更好的体验,这与人们的身心健康是有关的。因此推知,在杂志的“健康与生活”栏目中会看到这类文章。故选B。

“哈佛第一代项目”的协调员,我一直在这个博客上分享我的大学经历的点点滴滴。F项(以下是对即将上大学或即将大学毕业的人的一些建议。)承接上文,这些建议是上文“点点滴滴”的一部分。接下来的一段中的“
you
have
to
give
yourself
space
and
time
to
grow(你必须给自己成长的空间和时间。)”是一个具体的建议。故选F项。

your

in
mind
and
allow
them
to
grow
as
you
push
beyond
your

zone.”
提到:牢记你的目标,并在你跨越舒适区时让它们成长。C项(关心这些事情是可以的,但不要把自己困在里面。)承接上文,those
things指的是“stability,
success,
and
happiness”。下文强调保持目标和让目标成长,该选项经but转折之后,与下文在语意衔接上是通顺的。故选C项。
【18题详解】

”提到:愿意改变主意。获胜的感觉很棒,但是你从错误中学到的东西总是比从第一次做对的事情中学到的要多。随着时间的推移,我学会了腾出空间成为一个更好的倾听者,并在我错的时候承认错误。D项(当时可能很难做到,但从长远来看,它是有价值的。)承接上文,it指代的是前面的“I
learned
to
make
space
to
be
a
better
listener,
and
to
admit
when
I’m
wrong.”。故选D项。
【19题详解】

【20题详解】
前文“As

you
are
free,
you
need
to
free
somebody
else.
”是相同的。在内容上,这两个句子都是在为后文的“利用自己掌握的资源与他人快乐地生活”的具体做法。故选E项。

47.
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In
early
November,
I
told
the
pupils
in
my
class
I
taught
in
Delaware
about
my
plan.
“I'd
like
all
of
you
to
do
extra
jobs
around
the
house
to
cam
some
money,”
I
said.
“Then
we'll
buy
food
for
a
Thanksgiving
dinner
for
someone
who
might
not
have
a
nice
dinner
otherwise.”
I
wanted
them
to
understand
that
religion
is
more
than
noble
ideas;
that
people
somehow
have
to
make
it
come
alive.
I
hoped
they
could
experience
a
sense
of
their
own
power
to
make
changes.
Early
in
Thanksgiving
week,
the
boys
and
girls
arrived
in
class
holding
their
hard-earned
money.
They
had
set
tables,
washed
dishes,
cared
for
younger
sisters
or
brothers.
And
now
they
couldn't
wait
to
go
shopping.
I
supervised
(监督)
while
they
moved
quickly
up
and
down
the
supermarket.
At
last
we
headed
toward
the
checkout,
pushing
a
cart
(购物车)
filled
with
turkey
and
other
pieces
of
food.
Then
someone
spotted
a
“necessity”
that
sent
them
racing.
“Flowers!”
Kristine
cried.
The
group
ran
toward
the
holiday
plants.
It
was
more
meaningful
to
use
any
extra
money
to
buy
staples
(主食)
that
could
be
stretched
into
meals.
After
all,
I
pronounced,
“You
can't
eat
flowers.”
“But
Mrs.
Sherlock,
we
want
flowers."
Defeated,
1
looked
at
the
collection
of
purple
chrysanthemums
(菊花).
“She’ll
like
this
one,”
the
children
agreed,
and
put
the
purple
plant
into
the
cart
gently.
An
agency
had
given
us
the
name
and
address
of
a
needy
grandmother
who
had
lived
alone
for
many
years.
Soon
we
were
bouncing
along
a
road
to
her
house.
The
atmosphere
in
the
car
was
definitely
not
spiritual.
“You're
squishing
(压扁)
me!”
one
voice
announced.
“I
think
I'm
scared
of
strangers,”
said
another.
Between
giggling
(咯咯地笑)
and
punching,
and
those
purple
flowers,
I
wasn't
sure
that
any
lesson
about
giving
and
receiving
was
getting
through.

Gestures-such
as
pointing
or
waving-go
hand
in
hand
with
a
child's
first
words,
and
twins
lag
(滞后)behind
single
children
in
producing
and
using
those
gestures,two
studies
from
Georgia
State
University
psychology
researchers
show.
The
lag
in
gesture
among
twins
may
be
mostly
due
to
lower
parental
input,
Ozcaliskan
said.
It's
likely
that
parents
caring
for
twins
engage
in
shorter
conversations
with
their
children,
including
gesturing
less,
because
their
attention
is
divided
and
their
labor
is
doubled.However,
parents
of
single
children
used
a
greater
amount
and
diversity
of
gestures
than
parents
of
twins.
Ozcaliskan
said
she
had
grown
curious
about
gesture
because
it
had
not
yet
been
studied
among
twins.
We
have
already
known
that
twins
are
initially
at
a
disadvantage
where
language
is
concerned.
Most
of
the
time,
these
lags
are
within
the
normal
range
of
differences,
and
nothing
to
worry
about.
Almost
all
children
will
catch
up
to
each
other
by
around
age
three
and
a
half.
“However,there
was
almost
nothing
in
research
on
gesturing
among
twins,"
Ozcaliskan
said.
Babies
start
using
pointing
around
10
months,
a
few
months
before
they
produce
their
first
words.
Gesture
helps
them
convey
what
they
can't
yet
communicate
in
speech
and
prepares
the
way
for
children's
early
words.
Twins
sometimes
develop
their
own
systems
of
communication,
even
their
own
“twin
language,"
which
has
also
been
shown
to
delay
language
acquisition.
“Perhaps
it
also
delays
the
use
of
gestures.
Gesture
and
speech
together
form
a
closely
integrated
system
in
a
child's
development,
and
a
child's
first
gestures
often
precede
their
first
attempts
at
speech,"
Ozcaliskan
said.
"Gesture
is
a
very
powerful
tool,"
she
said.
“Pay
attention
to
your
child's
gestures,
and
then
provide
verbal(言语的)
descriptions
to
help
their
language
development,
such
as
naming
objects
when
children
point
to
them."
4.
What
mainly
causes
twins
to
produce
and
use
fewer
gestures?
A.
Reduced
parental
input.
B.
Undivided
parental
attention.
C.
Too
much
“twin
language".
D.
Slow
language
development.
5.
The

word
“precede"
in
Paragraph

means
_
A.

B.

with
C.
come
before
D.

6.
Which
of
the
following
may
best
help
children's
language
development?
A.
When
the
child
smiles,
parents
smile
big
smiles
as
well.
B.
When
the
child
makes
a
small
mistake,
parents
ignore
it.
C.
When
the
child
points
to
a
doll,
parents
pass
it
to
him
or
her
quickly.
D.
When
the
child
points
to
a
bottle,
parents
point
to
it,
saying
“bottle".
7.
What
can
be
learned
from
the
study?
A.
Twins
fall
behind
single
children
in
early
gesturing.
B.
Twins
arc
at
a
disadvantage
in
language
of
a
lifetime.
C.
Enough
research
has
been
done
on
twins'
gesturing.
D.
Gestures
prepare
children
for
future
development.

Sustained
Silent
Reading
(SSR)
is
the
practice
of
providing
a
short
period
of
class
time
for
students
to
read
silently
whatever
they
choose
according
to
their
interests.SSR
programs
can
be
offered
at
actually
any
grade
level.
However,it
takes
a
great
deal
of
time,effort,and
know-how
to
put
a
successful
SSR
program
into
operation.
I
first
recognized
this
when
I
was
a
high
school
teacher
twenty
years
ago.
Though
some
of
my
students
were
happy
to
be
allowed
to
select
and
read
books
in
class,
many
never
truly
dived
into
their
reading.
I
knew
that
there
must
be
ways
to
improve
the
implementation(实施)
of
my
SSR
program,
but
I
wasn't
sure
what
they
were.
Years
later,
when
I
returned
to
the
University
of
Southern
California,
I
began
analyzing
a
large
sample
of
SSR
studies
to
determine
what
made
them
effective
and
found
that
successful
programs
shared
five
key
factors:
easy
access
to
reading
materials,
sufficiently
interesting
materials,
teachers'
encouragement,
follow-up
activities
and
reading
at
least
twice
a
week.
In
fact,
only
when
teachers
follow
specific
guidelines
do
these
programs
achieve
their
full
potential.
Having
learned
this,
I
decided
to
create
an
“ideal"
SSR
program
for
my
students
by
employing
the
five
factors
above.
At
the
same
time,
another
high
school
in
our
district
also
made
the
decision
to
offer
students
SSR
time
each
day.
However,
having
no
knowledge
of
the
five
factors,
the
teachers
simply
asked
their
students
to
“read
anything
for
fifteen
minutes."
The
result
was
that
the
students
at
my
school
outperformed
(胜过)
the
other
school
in
four
areas:
reading
comprehension,
positive
attitudes
toward
reading,
frequency
of
after-school
pleasure
reading,
and
use
of
a
wider
range
of
reading
sources.
I
shared
my
findings
with
the
other
school's
staff
members.
Since
then,
both
schools
have
experienced
the
positive
benefits
of
SSR.
TodayI
have
given
many
lectures
at
a
wide
variety
of
schools
where
teachers
are
eager
to
learn
“how-to"
methods
for
developing
programs
that
will
motivate
their
students
to
become
hooked
on
reading.They
ask
a
variety
of
excellent
questions
and
I
have
never
been
bored
of
answering
them.

Silent

We
visited
Rome
for
the
first
time
a
few
years
ago,
and
my
memories
aren't
ones
of
buildings,
statues,
or
even
the
food.
It's
the
selfie-sticks
(自拍杆)-being
sold
on
every
street
corner,
and
being
put
to
use
everywhere
we
went.
When
traveling,
people
were
photographing
themselves,
often
without
bothering
to
look
at
all
the
beauty
behind
them.
Research
shows
that
we're
distracted
by
photography.
When
we
take
pictures,
we
may
improve
our
chances
of
remembering
the
facts,
like
where
we
were
or
what
we
ate.
But
we
miss
out
on
other
details,
and
don't
see
the
“big
picture”
because
we're
too
focused
on
the
small
picture
on
our
screen.
What's
more,
if
we
rely
on
photographs
to
store
our
experiences,
we
spend
less
time
practising
the
act
of
remembering.
And
by
not
stretching
our
recall
muscles
regularly,
we
don't
strengthen
particular
memories.
As
a
result,
we
may
end
up
with
very
shallow
records
of
the
past.
And
that's
especially
true
if
we're
always
photographing
ourselves.
Selfies
reveal
little
about
the
“big
picture”-what's
happening
around
us,
or
how
we
were
really
feeling
at
the
time.
So
take
photographs
to
remind
you
of
key
details,
to
be
creative,
and
to
show
to
family
and
friends.
But
get
into
the
habit
of
capturing
experiences
with
your
mind
too.
Consciously
take
in
everything
around
you.
Use
all
your
senses,
not
just
your
eyes.
Be
aware
of
your
thoughts
and
feelings,
too.
It’s
a
great
habit
to
get
into.
You'll
experience
more
if
you're
not
fussing
with(瞎忙一气)your
phone.
You'll
create
more
durable
memories
by
returning
to
the
photos
again
and
again.
You'll
also
be
exercising
your
brain,
which
is
the
best
way
to
keep
it
working
well
for
everything.
And
in
the
process,
I
bet
you'll
discover
that
your
memory
is
by
far
the
most
interesting
lens(透镜)through
which
to
look
back
at
your
past.

C.
To

the
topic
of

To

interest
in

What
does
the

refer
to
in
the

For
four
years,
as
a
coordinator(协调员)
for
the
Harvard
First
Generation
Program,I
have
been
sharing
bits
and
pieces
of
my
college
experience
on
this
blog.
____16____
The
most
important
lesson
I
learned
in
college
is
that
you
have
to
give
yourself
space
and
time
to
grow.
When
I
arrived
at
Harvard,
I
thought
all
my
college
experiences
were
just
the
means
to
the
larger
end
of
stability,
success,and
happiness.
____17____
Keep
your
goals
in
mind
and
allow
them
to
grow
as
you
push
beyond
your
comfort
zone.
Be
willing
to
change
your
mind.
It
feels
great
to
win,
but
you'll
always
learn
more
from
your
mistakes
than
you'll
learn
from
the
things
you
got
right
the
first
time.
Over
time,
I
learned
to
make
space
to
be
a
better
listener,
and
to
admit
when
I'm
wrong.
____18____
____19____
I
was
used
to
handling
life
without
much
external
guidance.
I
thought
asking
for
help
was
equal
to
admitting
defeat,
but
that
wasn't
true.
Once
I
realized
that,
it
became
easier
to
allow
myself
to
rely
on
friends
for
support
when
I
really
needed
it.
As
graduation
approaches,
I
often
think
about
a
quote
by
Morrison:
“When
you
get
jobs
that
you
have
been
so
brilliantly
trained
for,
remember
that
your
real
job
is
that
if
you
are
free,
you
need
to
free
somebody
else.
____20____
I
don't
know
what
I'll
be
doing
in
five
or
ten years,
but
I
will
be
using
the
resources
at
my
command
to
live
happily
with
others.
A.
Don't
hesitate
to
turn
to
others
when
necessary.
B.
Learn
to
absorb
new
ideas
while
remaining
true
to
yourself.
C.
It's
OK
to
care
about
those
things,
but
don't
box
yourself
in.
D.
It
can
be
hard
in
the
moment,
but
it's
valuable
in
the
long
run.
E.
If
you
have
some
power,
then
your
job
is
to
empower
somebody
else.
F.
Here
are
some
suggestions
for
those
who
are
to
start
or
finish
college.
G.
So
I'd
like
to
share
some
unforgettable
moments
about
my
college
life.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In
early
November,
I
told
the
pupils
in
my
class
I
taught
in
Delaware
about
my
plan.
“I'd
like
all
of
you
to
do
extra
jobs
around
the
house
to
cam
some
money,”
I
said.
“Then
we'll
buy
food
for
a
Thanksgiving
dinner
for
someone
who
might
not
have
a
nice
dinner
otherwise.”
I
wanted
them
to
understand
that
religion
is
more
than
noble
ideas;
that
people
somehow
have
to
make
it
come
alive.
I
hoped
they
could
experience
a
sense
of
their
own
power
to
make
changes.
Early
in
Thanksgiving
week,
the
boys
and
girls
arrived
in
class
holding
their
hard-earned
money.
They
had
set
tables,
washed
dishes,
cared
for
younger
sisters
or
brothers.
And
now
they
couldn't
wait
to
go
shopping.
I
supervised
(监督)
while
they
moved
quickly
up
and
down
the
supermarket.
At
last
we
headed
toward
the
checkout,
pushing
a
cart
(购物车)
filled
with
turkey
and
other
pieces
of
food.
Then
someone
spotted
a
“necessity”
that
sent
them
racing.
“Flowers!”
Kristine
cried.
The
group
ran
toward
the
holiday
plants.
It
was
more
meaningful
to
use
any
extra
money
to
buy
staples
(主食)
that
could
be
stretched
into
meals.
After
all,
I
pronounced,
“You
can't
eat
flowers.”
“But
Mrs.
Sherlock,
we
want
flowers."
Defeated,
1
looked
at
the
collection
of
purple
chrysanthemums
(菊花).
“She’ll
like
this
one,”
the
children
agreed,
and
put
the
purple
plant
into
the
cart
gently.
An
agency
had
given
us
the
name
and
address
of
a
needy
grandmother
who
had
lived
alone
for
many
years.
Soon
we
were
bouncing
along
a
road
to
her
house.
The
atmosphere
in
the
car
was
definitely
not
spiritual.
“You're
squishing
(压扁)
me!”
one
voice
announced.
“I
think
I'm
scared
of
strangers,”
said
another.
Between
giggling
(咯咯地笑)
and
punching,
and
those
purple
flowers,
I
wasn't
sure
that
any
lesson
about
giving
and
receiving
was
getting
through.
