Would you mind if….. 请求允许或客气地请人做某事。
Would you mind if I open the window 我打开窗户好吗？
回答带有mind的问句时要注意yes或no都是针对mind（在乎，介意）选用的，表示“介意，在乎”时，选用yes,和面跟的句子是不让对方做某事。表示“不介意，不在乎”时选用no，后面跟的句子是允许对方做某事，如：
—Would you mind my smoking 你介意我抽烟吗？
—Yes,you’d better not / No,certainly not 是的，你最好别抽 / 不介意，你当然可以抽
Would you mind + v-ing….. 用来客气的提出请求，否定形式为：
Would you mind + not + v-ing…..
Would you mind give me a glass of water 请给我一杯水好吗？
Would you mind not smoking 请你别吸烟好吗？
Would you mind + one’s +v-ing….. 用来提出询问，征求对方的意见（在非正式问体中v-ing前的所有格可换为宾语”）.
Would you mind my (me) smoking here 我在这里吸烟你介意吗？
if 和whether的辨析
相同点：
if 和 whether都可以引导宾语从句，意为“是否”，两者通常可以互换但不可省略。从句表一般疑问的意义。
Can you tell me if/whether it’s polite to eat with your arms or elbow on the table in America 你能告诉我，在美国将手臂或肘放在桌面上吃饭是否礼貌？
【注意】whether 和if引导的宾语从句要用陈述语序。
区别是：
whether引导的宾语从句可以移到句首，if则不能。
I can’t say whether this is true or not. = Whether this is true or not, I can’t say.
这是不是真的，我不敢说。
介词之后的宾语从句，用whether，不用if
I’m interested in whether she likes English.我感兴趣的是她是否喜欢英语。
不定式前用whether,不用if.
She asked me whether to start early. 她问我是否早点出发。
if除了有“是否”，还有“如果，假如”之意，用在条件状语从句中。
He is going to Beijing if it doesn’t rain tomorrow.
In Japan, it’s polite to eat soup ______ and finish all the rice.
