B
I
was
sitting
at
my
kitchen
table
the
other
day
with
a
pen,
notebook,
calculator
and
a
pile
of
bills.
I
was
doing
my
monthly
budget.
There
were
bills
for
electricity,
water,
rent,
insurance,
the
car
payment,
the
phone
bill,
and
the
cable
bill.
Plus
money
needed
to
be
set
aside
for
food,
gas,
clothes
and
hopefully
a
little
left
over
to
save
for
those
unexpected
bills
that
always
seemed
to
show
up.
When
I
was
done,
I
shook
my
head,
closed
my
eyes
and
thought
of
a
time
long
ago
when
I
would
regularly
get
treasures.
When
I
was
a
boy,
we
lived
across
the
road
from
Camp
Caesar.
It
held
week
long
camps
all
through
the
summer
and
my
grandma
who
I
lovingly
called
"Nanny"
worked
in
her
big
kitchen.
I
remember
slipping
there
getting
a
smile,
a
hug,
a
kiss
and
a
hot
roll
from
Nanny.
Then
she
would
always
take
deep
in
her
pockets
and
pull
out
a
treasure,
a
shiny
quarter.
She
would
give
it
to
me
and
I
would
run
down
the
hill
to
either
get
an
ice
cold
can
of
coke
from
the
pop
machine
or
I
would
head
to
the
camp's
swimming
pool
where
I
could
buy
a
warm
cup
of
cherry
coke
for
15
cents
and
a
tiny
10
cent
bag
of
chips
from
a
stand.
I
took
my
time
because
it
was
always
a
big
decision.
It
was
nice
too
feeling
so
rich
for
a
few
minutes.
Looking
back
now
I
can
see
that
the
real
treasure
was
not
the
quarter
at
all.
It
was
the
love
with
which
Nanny
gave
it
to
me.
I
would
have
still
visited
her
at
work
every
day
if
I
had
never
gotten
a
single
quarter.
It
was
her
smile,
hugs,
and
kisses
that
were
priceless
in
my
heart
then
and
now.
The
old
saying
is
true,
"With
your
work
you
can
make
a
living,
but
it
is
with
your
love
that
you
make
a
life."
You
can
always
welcome
love
into
your
heart,
soul
and
mind.
And
you
can
always
share
your
love
with
others.
It
is
that
one
treasure
that
lasts
forever.

C
There
you
are,
looking
through
your
WeChat
moments
or
your
Weibo
feed,
and
you
come
across
a
post
saying
something
like
this:"I
just
got
accepted
to
Harvard
and
Oxford!
Are
they
sure
they
didn't
mix
my
applications
up
with
somebody
else's?"
This
person
is
clearly
humblebragging.
The
term
"humblebrag"
was
first
coined
back
in
2010
by
the
late
US
comedian
Harris
Wittels,
and
it
describes
when
someone
makes
a
seemingly
modest
statement,
but
the
actual
purpose
is
to
bring
attention
to
something
they
are
proud
of.
The
example
above
is
a
modesty-based
humblebrag.
The
person
wants
to
tell
others:"I
got
accepted
to
Harvard
and
Oxford!"
However,
they
don't
want
to
seem
too
proud
of
their
accomplishments.
So,
instead,
they
word
it
in
a
way
to
be
more
modest
and
bring
down
the
importance
of
their
achievements.
Although
people
who
humblebrag
think
it
will
make
them
more
likeable
because
they
aren't
talking
proudly
about
their
victories,
a
study
published
in
the
Journal
of
Personality
and
Social
Psychology
showed
that
humblebragging
actually
has
the
opposite
effect.
"Humblebragging
doesn't
have
the
intended
result
because
it
seems
insincere.
That
'poor
me'
attitude
combined
with
self-promotion
does
not
lead
to
a
favorable
impression,"
said
Ovul
Sezer,
the
lead
author
of
the
study
and
an
assistant
professor
of
organizational
behavior
at
the
University
of
North
Carolina,
US.
"Even
simply
bragging
or
complaining
is
better,
because
at
least
those
messages
are
seen
as
more
sincere."
Sezer's
study
also
found
that
nearly
60%
of
humblebrags
were
complaint-based
humblebragging,
with
most
people
humblebragging
about
their
looks,
followed
by
their
money
or
wealth,
and
finally
about
their
performance
at
work.
"It's
such
a
common
phenomenon.
All
of
us
know
some
people
in
our
lives,
whether
in
the
social
media
or
in
the
workplace,
who
do
this
annoying
thing,"
commented
Sezer,
adding
that
we
all
do
it
to
some
extent.
So,
if
you
want
to
share
your
achievements
with
others,
what's
the
best
way
to
do
it
then?Sezer
suggests
that
people
admit
their
self-promotion
and
harvest
the
rewards
of
being
sincere.
She
also
suggests
finding
a
go-between,
adding,
"If
someone
brags
for
you,
that's
the
best
thing
that
can
happen
to
you,
because
then
you
don't
seem
like
you're
bragging."

D
Nowadays
with
the
popularity
of
the
Internet,
many
people
complain
of
the
difficulty
of
finding
their
"true"
identity
among
all
the
conflicting
messages
and
demands
of
the
world
around
them.
This
idea,
that,
somewhere
deep
down,
is
the
"real"
us,
is
as
old
as
philosophy
itself.
It
involves
things
like
our
values,
our
sense
of
purpose,
the
beliefs
that
make
us
who
we
are.
We
often
ask
the
question:
Are
you
living
the
life
you
want
to
be
living,
or
the
life
other
people
want
you
to
live?
The
Internet
has
brought
the
opinions
of
others
to
our
own
lives
as
never
before,
and
it
is
threatening
our
ability
to
understand
who
we
really
are.
To
discover
our
true
selves,
maybe
it's
time
to
disconnect.
Not
forever,
that
would
be
throwing
the
baby
out
with
the
bathwater,
but
for
significant
periods
of
our
days,
weeks,
or
months.
Because,
with
disconnection
comes
quiet
and
with
quiet
comes
the
ability
to
reflect.
In
researching
my
World
Service
documentary
Default
World,
I
spoke
to
a
lot
of
people
about
their
experience
of
technology.
Many
said
they
were
trying
to
spend
less
time
online,
taking
a
break
from
Facebook,
and
connecting
only
when
they
needed
to.
And
they
spoke
with
pleasure
of
rediscovering
the
physical
world
around
them
and
the
world
of
human-to-human
communication.
I
think
this
is
encouraging.
We
are
still
learning
how
to
be
on
the
Internet,
what
effect
this
huge
network
of
computers
—
a
network
we
have
built
ourselves
—
has
on
our
sense
of
self.
We
are
at
the
moment,
as
Thoreau
said
of
people
in
the
industrial
revolution,
"tools
of
our
tools".
Disconnecting
gives
us
a
chance
to
turn
the
tables
to
see
the
Internet
not
as
something
that
overwhelms(使不知所措)us
but
as
a
tool,
which
we
use
when
we
need
it.
Only
then
can
we
really
understand
who
we
are
and
what
we
can
give
the
world.
And
that,
deep
down,
is
the
real
tool
of
our
identity.
32.
What
makes
it
difficult
for
us
to
find
the
"real"
us?
A.
The
flood
of
online
messages.
B.
Losing
our
sense
of
purpose.
C.
The
fast
pace
of
our
modern
life.
D.
Lacking
values
and
beliefs.
33.
What
should
we
do
first
to
discover
our
true
selves
according
to
the
text?
A.
Rediscover
the
physical
world.
B.
Build
a
good
social
relationship.
C.
Spend
time
studying
philosophy.
D.
Take
a
break
from
the
Internet.
34.
What
does
the
underlined
phrase
"turn
the
tables"
in
the
last
paragraph
probably
mean?
A.
To
win
a
victory.
B.
To
change
the
situation.
C.
To
follow
a
trend.
D.
To
solve
the
problem
with
the
table.
35.
In
which
part
of
a
newspaper
can
we
read
the
text?
A.
Science.
B.
Health.
C.
Lifestyle.
D.
Nature.

can
pick
up
their
germs.
We
then
will
probably
touch
our
own
eyes
or
noses
or
mouths,
potentially
sickening
ourselves
and
restarting
the
cycle.
Now
that
a
novel
coronavirus
is
spreading
fast,
our
hands
are
being
cast
in
a
new,
doubtful
light.(37)______
And
lately,
the
Internet
has
been
full
of
suggestions
for
socially
acceptable
ways
to
greet
each
other
that
don't
involve
passing
germs
along
unintentionally
from
one
person
to
the
next.
(38)______
In
fact,
the
tradition
of
shaking
hands
isn't
the
only
greeting
to
take
a
fresh
look.
A
Maori
tribe
in
New
Zealand
put
the
brakes
on
hongi,
the
traditional
nose-to-nose
hello.
(39)______
Maybe
people
will
stop
making
fun
of
the
Hollywood
air
kiss,
though
it's
not
a
huge
improvement
health-wise.
COVID-19
is
a
real
threat,
and
we
shouldn't
take
the
warning
lightly.
We
may,
indeed,
need
to
keep
our
hands
to
ourselves
for
the
time
being.
But
we're
not
ready
to
send
handshake
into
the
dustbin
of
history.
Humans
long
for
making
a
physical
connection
with
friends.
For
now,
perhaps,
a
regretful
smile
and
nod
might
work
as
a
shared
acknowledgment.
(40)______
A.
Could
we
hug
each
other
or
nod?
B.
Could
this
be
the
end
of
the
handshake?
C.
As
we
all
know,
shaking
hands
has
become
a
habit.
D.
After
all,
our
friendly
intentions
were
not
to
infect
or
be
infected
by
others.
E.
These
days,
it
would
seem,
the
potential
weapon
isn't
a
knife,
but
the
hand
itself.
F.
We're
being
drilled
in
handwashing
techniques
as
if
we
were
all
second-graders.
G.
The
French
have
been
advised
to
abandon
the
familiar
kiss
on
the
cheek
greeting.

Sandra
was
a
businesswoman
in
Orlando.
Approaching
her
50th
birthday,
she
decided
to
(
41
)
her
love
of
cats
and
her
work
experience
to
start
the
Orlando
Cat
Cafe.
As
a
lifelong
cat
fan,
Sandra's
main
goal
in
opening
the
cafe
was
to
help
(
42
)
cats
up
for
adoption
with
proper
pet
parents.
What
she
didn't
(
43
)
at
the
time
was
that
her
café
would
help
human
visitors
as
much
as
the
cats!
"The
most
(
44
)
thing
in
the
cafe
is
that
they
always
have
new
cats
and
cats
need
socialization,
so
both
sides

!"
says
Laurie,
who
is
one
(
46

guest.
She,
like
many
other
cat
lovers,
who

have

because
of

often
comes

the

to

the

whenever
she
likes.
Plus,
Sandra's
cat-adoption
(
49
)
aren't
the
only
charitable
initiative(创举)happening
at
the
cafe!
The
coffee
and
food

for
visitors
are
made
by
Axum
Coffee,
a
company
that
was
also
started
to

others.
Axum
is
a
city
in
Ethiopia
where
fresh
water
is

and
even
poverty
is
widely
visible.
In
fact,
the
coffee
and
food
are
sold
at
a
low
price
at
the
cafe,
some
of
whose
(
53
)
go
to
the
people
of
Axum,
Ethiopia,
to
help
improve
their
(
54
)
of
life.
"My
cafe
and
Axum
Coffee
have
a(n)
(
55
)
mission
to
reach
out
to
others.
We
hit
it
off
and
became
partners,"
says
Sandra.
Maybe
the
next
time
you
visit
Orlando,
you'll
(
56
)
Sandra's
cafe,
and
hit
it
off
with
one
of
the
cats
up
for
(
57
)
!
Adoption
specialists
are
always
on-site
to
help
match
the
personalities
of
potential
(
58
)
with
those
of
the
cats
in
the
play
area.
And
it

More
than
80
cats
have
been
adopted
since
Sandra

her

in
2016.

Dear

It

With
