Nowadays women appear to have a positive
image of themselves as safer drivers than men.
In a survey done for insurer MetLife, 51%
of women said they drive more safely. The evidence is on their side: Men are
3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1
times as likely to be punished for drunk driving. "Women are on average
less aggressive and more law abiding (守法的) drivers,
which leads to fewer accidents," the report says. However, not all male
drivers share the same opinion. Of the men surveyed by MetLife, 39% claimed
male drivers were safer. The findings did back them upon one point: automotive
knowledge. The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety
equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover
accidents.
Auto safety unavoidably matters to Money.
Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar
amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women. In general, women
pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men. A study by the website also
showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states. Among
individual states, women get the greatest, advantage in Wyoming (where they pay
20% less), South Dakota and Washington, D. C, where their insurance costs are
16% lower.
"More than 11,900 male drivers died in
US traffic accidents in 2009, compared with just under 4,900 women
drivers" according to the study. "Based on miles traveled, men died
at a rate of 2. 5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, vs. 1.7 deaths for
women."

Shyness May Be Partly Inherited(遗传)
About 92 million Americans are shy, and
according to recent research about half of them inherited the trait.
The studies were discussed at the American
Psychological Convention.
One study, by Harvard University, was of
babies 21- 48 months old. It concluded that these babies had a high heart rate
when shown unfamiliar people or different toys.
Although shyness is not new, it has only
recently become of interest to researchers. The first study on the genetic
connection was in 1979.
According to Warren Jones of the University
of Tulsa, social relations these days are more complex. "With less ritual(仪式) and more complex situations," he said, "shyness is a
national concern."
Not all shy people are anxious and fearful,
according to another study. Evidence shows that only half of shy people are
tense, worried, and fearful in social situations.
Many men use shyness as an excuse for
failing in social situations, according to C.R. Snyder of the University of
Kansas. "This is not true of females. Perhaps, American men are pressured
to be assertive(自信的) and successful. So they
would rather say they're shy than admit they're incompetent."
Shy people may do very well socially after
the first meeting with someone. In fact, shy people tend to be more stable.
The psychologists said shyness seems to be
cultural. Japan has the highest rating. China and Israel have the lowest
rating. The United States rated in the middle.
(1)The word "trait" in the first paragraph means ______.
A.way B.character C.tradition D.possession
(2)Those babies studied were ______ when they saw unfamiliar people or different toys.

A.Some shy people are anxious and fearful, some not.
B.According to Warren Jones, shyness had something to do with social relations
C.Researchers began to study shyness when it was known to them.
D.Shyness can perhaps make people do very well socially.
(4)We can learn from this passage that ______.
A.shyness is naturally inherited
B.which country has shy people.

D.shy people have virtues as well as shortcomings.

Four
benefits of writing by hand
Today is National Handwriting Day! Although

in.
It's better for learning.
That's because putting ink to paper stimulates
(刺激) the brain. One study from 2010 found that the brain areas related
to learning “lit up ”much more
when kids were asked to write words like "spaceship" by hand versus
just studying the words closely.

Many famous authors prefer writing by hand
to the use of a typewriter or computer. Writer Susan Sontag once said that she
penned her first drafts (草稿)before typing them up for
editing later. She said, “ ” A 2009 study seems
to support Sontag's preference for writing by hand: Elementary school students
who wrote essays with a pen not only wrote more than their keyboard-typing
friends, but also wrote faster and in more complete sentences.
It will prevent you from being distracted (分心).
The computer in front of you is really a
distraction. In 2012, scientists even suggested that
taking a five-minute break to browse Tumblr or BuzzFeed could make you a more
productive worker. However, when it's time to work on that essay, have only a
pen and paper in front of you.
It keeps your brain sharp as you get older.
According to The Wall Street Journal, some
physicians say that the act of writing is good exercise for those who want to
keep their minds sharp as they age.
A.
It makes you a better writer.
B.
Writing is good for your brain.
C.
Of course, the Internet isn't all bad.
D.
I like the slowness of writing by hand.

1.7 deaths for
women."
(1)According to the study, female drivers _____.
A.are more aggressive while driving
B.are more interested in auto knowledge

A.cause more accidents on the road
B.have the lowest amount of money on insurance claims

Shyness May Be Partly Inherited(遗传)
About 92 million Americans are shy, and
according to recent research about half of them inherited the trait.
The studies were discussed at the American
Psychological Convention.
One study, by Harvard University, was of
babies 21- 48 months old. It concluded that these babies had a high heart rate
when shown unfamiliar people or different toys.
Although shyness is not new, it has only
recently become of interest to researchers. The first study on the genetic
connection was in 1979.
According to Warren Jones of the University
of Tulsa, social relations these days are more complex. "With less ritual(仪式) and more complex situations," he said, "shyness is a
national concern."
Not all shy people are anxious and fearful,
according to another study. Evidence shows that only half of shy people are
tense, worried, and fearful in social situations.
Many men use shyness as an excuse for
failing in social situations, according to C.R. Snyder of the University of
Kansas. "This is not true of females. Perhaps, American men are pressured
to be assertive(自信的) and successful. So they
would rather say they're shy than admit they're incompetent."
Shy people may do very well socially after
the first meeting with someone. In fact, shy people tend to be more stable.
The psychologists said shyness seems to be
cultural. Japan has the highest rating. China and Israel have the lowest
rating. The United States rated in the middle.

A.way B.character C.tradition D.possession
(2)Those babies studied were ______ when they saw unfamiliar people or different toys.

(3)Which of the following statements is wrong
A.Some shy people are anxious and fearful, some not.
B.According to Warren Jones, shyness had something to do with social relations
C.Researchers began to study shyness when it was known to them.
D.Shyness can perhaps make people do very well socially.
(4)We can learn from this passage that ______.

just studying the words closely.
