On my first day of high school, I asked an
eleventh grader where my class was. And he told me it was "on the fourth
floor, next to the pool." I found out five minutes later that we don't
even have a fourth floor and there's no pool either! Besides that, I didn't
have any trouble with the older kid.
I think the biggest difference
between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and
size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to
several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size
is around 550, but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at
school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give
about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not
just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I've prepared for the
night before, gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. I've changed that
this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don't take easy classes just to
have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the
first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking
might be present in some middle schools, they're also around in high school. I
have a lot of friends who promised they'd never drink or smoke, but are now
partying every weekend. If you have "fun" and spend your nights
wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you're applying for (申请)
college. The "friends" who say you're a loser for not partying are
really not your friends at all. It's hard to see your closest friends grow
apart and go in different directions, but don't follow their footsteps. Create
your own path in life and make your own decisions.
(1)What does the author think of high school
A.There are very few activities.
B.It's hard to meet new people there.
C.It requires hard work.
D.There isn't enough time for homework.
(2)The author advises high school students to .
A.get ready for tests the night before
B.give up sports
C.choose useful classes
D.try their best to get good grades
(3)The text is probably written by .
A.a high school student B.a chemistry teacher
C.a college student D.a sports player
(4)The last paragraph mainly tells us .
A.about the trouble caused by drinking and smoking
B.not to go to any party in high school
C.not to lose ourselves in high school
D.about the importance of making friends

Yesterday I went to the nursing home to
visit my grandma. She just got out of the hospital recently where she had some
serious operations. I wanted to surprise her after work so I stopped by for a
quick visit.
When I got there she was happy
to see me. We hugged, kissed and exchanged greetings. Then I heard a woman
crying. It was my grandma's roommate. The curtain was drawn so I could not see
her. She started calling out a name that wasn't mine but she was certainly
talking to me, begging me to go to her side of the room.
I ignored her at first and
continued visiting with my grandma. Then she started begging and saying,
"Please, come to see me!" So I went to see her.
When I drew the curtain back
she looked so old but flashed me the biggest smile! She opened her arms wide
for me to hug her so I bent low and gave her a hug. I sat on her bed and talked
with her for a few minutes. She kept calling me by the other name but I did not
correct her. She told me stories as if I had been there when they happened.
Finally I went back to talk
with my grandma. Then the other woman started crying again, saying,
"Please, come back." She finally slept.
I stopped by the nurse's station
and the nurse told me that the lady suffers from Alzheimer's. I mentioned the
name she had called me. The nurse told me it was the lady's daughter's name.
Then I understood why she wanted me to go to talk with her.
We will all get old someday. Some
of us will have broken minds like my grandma's roommate and some of us will
have broken bodies like my grandma. As I was leaving I promised I would go back
and visit the lady, even after my grandma moved back to her home.

I always feel sorry for world leaders busy
dealing with fights between nations. When my three children were young, most
days it was hard to keep my house from becoming a battlefield.
It got worse as they grew older. Three years ago, Zack, then 16,
couldn't make it through a day without making his sisters, Alex 11 and Taryn 9,
angry.
My husband and I tried to be
understanding the boy at such an age. We reasoned, punished, and left heartfelt
notes on his bed about how he was hurting our family. His answer was "I
say it because it's true."
I even tried telling the girls
to fight back. Bad idea. Now I had three children at war. Whatever I said to
them, they paid no attention. When there was no way out, I told everything to
my sister, Mary, in an email. She replied, "Don't email me. Email
him."
Our son was online every day,
mailing and talking with his friends. Maybe he would actually hear me this way.
I didn't say anything different, but email just took the tension away. There'd
be no shouting or door banging. Zack wouldn't feel under attack.
Zack didn't reply for days.
When he finally did, his entire message was four small words. I smiled when I
read them: "You're right. I'm sorry."
The children still fought, of
course, but Zack changed. Best of all, I now have a better way to talk with not
one but three of them. I like it that they don't tune me out as much as
they used to. They like not having to listen to me shouting to them. Or as Alex
says, "You're so much nicer online."
All I know is that the house is
quiet. But we're talking.
(1)What was the trouble before the online talk in the family
A.The writer failed to understand her daughters.
B.The children couldn't get along peacefully.
C.The family found it difficult to keep the house clean.
D.The parents were not willing to talk with their children.
(2)The writer emailed her sister .
A.to escape from the problem
B.hoping she'd email the boy
C.asking about childraising
D.to tell her about the family problem
(3)Why does the writer feel sorry for world leaders busy dealing with fights between nations
A.Because she doesn't think the leaders are successful.
B.Because she can understand that the leaders' job is hard.
C.Because she doesn't think fights can be stopped.
D.Because she has nothing to do with the leaders.

make Maybe it seems that everybody else already has his or her friends. Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you'd like to play with at break. Look for
chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Invite someone to play with you or say
"Do you want to sit here " in the lunchroom. When you're at break,
walk over to kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say "Hi, can I
play, too " or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this

根据空前"maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class." 且选项F中的he or she与上句中的him or her呼应。

【答案】(1)C
(2)C
(3)A
(4)A

While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools"和"If you have'fun‘ and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you're applying for (申请) college."

him.
"Get out of here!"
commanded the guards.

Yesterday I went to the nursing home to
visit my grandma. She just got out of the hospital recently where she had some
serious operations. I wanted to surprise her after work so I stopped by for a
quick visit.
When I got there she was happy
to see me. We hugged, kissed and exchanged greetings. Then I heard a woman
crying. It was my grandma's roommate. The curtain was drawn so I could not see
her. She started calling out a name that wasn't mine but she was certainly
talking to me, begging me to go to her side of the room.

she looked so old but flashed me the biggest smile! She opened her arms wide

【答案】(1)B
(2)D
(3)B

It's hard when a best friend
isn't around—maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different
class. You want to have new friends, but how do you
make Maybe it seems that everybody else already has his or her friends.
If you have trouble doing this
or if you're feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends.
Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things,
offer to help—and pretty soon, you'll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
But when you see each other, you can share
something you didn't have before he or she left: You can introduce him or her
to your new friends!
A.The best way to make friends is to be a friend.
B.What's right for me
C.But remember, there's always room for more friends.
D.You might still miss that special best friends.
E.Offer to share something or offer greetings.

【答案】F;C;E;A;D
根据空前"maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class." 且选项F中的he or she与上句中的him or her呼应。
Maybe it seems like everybody else already has his or her friends." 并且选项C中的"there's always room for more friends"可以引出下文交朋友的话题。
Invite someone to play with you or say 'Do you want to sit here ‘ in the lunchroom." E.Offer to share something or offer greetings.“可以通过分享和问候的方式来结交新朋友”符合语境。
Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you'll have one, or two, or even more new friends." A.The best way to make friends is to be a friend.“交朋友最好的方式是变成一个朋友”符合语境。故选A。
But when you see each other, you can share something you didn't have before he or she left:"中的"before he or she left"可知, 空格处应该有一个指代朋友的单数名词。
