现在的英文字母渊源于拉丁字母，而拉丁字母又渊源于希腊字母，但很多人却不知道，希腊字母其实是由腓尼基字母演变而来的。
在大约公元前13世纪，腓尼基人依据古埃及的图画文字创造了人类历史上第一批字母文字，共22个字母。这是腓尼基人对人类文化最伟大的贡献，由此，文明和历史得以传播和记录。如同汉字起源于象形，英语字母表中的每个字母一开始也都是描摹某种动物或物体形状的图画，而这些图画最后演变为符号。
