I was on the phone with Jane, my friend the other day, and she was sharing how she was overwhelmed (难以忍受的). She had too much going on — too many to-dos at work and at home, too many projects calling for her attention and too many employee issues that required her input. She felt unable to focus on anything long enough to bring it to an end.
As we talked it through, I was reminded of my computer when it freezes because it has so many windows open. Sometimes, I'm working on too many things, and my computer stops, as if paralyzed (瘫痪的), as if overwhelmed.
If our computer freezes when we're handling too many tasks at once then it's no surprise that we would too. There's too much data flowing around, too many ideas circulating, too many problems waiting to be solved. Too many windows open.
We need to learn to close some windows, to acknowledge that we can't focus on everything at once, and that we'd be more effective if we focused on one thing at a time. We need the faith that we can step away from the projects we closed out right now.
Sometimes it feels like we have no choice, that everything is a crisis at this moment and nothing can be dropped, or even postponed. But there is usually something that can be put off or someone who can step in and take away some of our burden. We can manage expectations. We can choose. We can be more realistic about what we can get done, by when and how well.
We don't expect our electronics to run as well when too many windows are open. Why should we expect that of ourselves? We need to close a few windows to overlook a few projects and to perhaps even power down for a few minutes so that we're fresh and able lo effectively handle all that comes our way.
4. Which word best describes Jane?
A. Busy. B. Ambitious. C. Considerate. D. Demanding.
5. What's the main purpose of paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. To offer a solution to the friend's problem.
B. To explain why the situation is overwhelming.
C. To encourage people to give up on some tasks.
D. To show that people are imperfect, like machines.
6. What does the author suggest to improve efficiency?
A. Learn to say no to unreasonable tasks.
B. Communicate with partners effectively.
C. Make sure goals are focused and realistic.
D. Lower others' expectations of achievements.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. How people deal with stress at work.
B. How to respond to multiple tasks at once.
C. The reasons why people suffer from anxiety.
D. The significance of powering down and relaxing.
C
I met Ariep on an island in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu. Being the last fluent Naati speaker in the area, he sorrowfully expressed his fear that, with his death, the language would no longer exist.
Naati is just an example of endangered languages. Today, 50% to 90% of the world's languages are considered at risk of falling out of use by the end of the century.
Over the last 10 years, this crisis has attracted more public attention. While we praise previous efforts made to protect dying indigenous languages native to specific places and spoken by aboriginal people, let's stop and ask: Why does it matter?
Should Naati's fate concern the world? Many speakers of endangered languages, including Ariep, communicate fluently in other languages. Is the hope of "saving" these small languages just a romantic idea of unrealistic scholars?
As a linguist. I'm on the opposite side of those answering "yes". I understand how critical and urgent language loss is. Individual communities rely on languages to form culture and identity, and for the global community. languages are an invaluable source of information about human cognition(认知).
If a language is lost, the relevant community heritage will disappear. For instance, People who speak Lulamogi in Uganda feel anxious that as people forget the terms describing methods of catching and eating white ants, they will also forget this important cultural practice.
When a language is disappearing, more is lost than just certain bits of Information Understanding language is vital to understanding human cognition. Every language presents us with a piece of the puzzle for finding out how language works in our mind, without which we are prevented from seeing the full picture.
For everyone's sake, we must preserve the world's languages to ensure linguistic diversity for future generations.
8. What do we know about Ariep?
A. He was afraid that he would die soon.
B. He took pride in being the last Naati speaker.
C. He was worried that Naati would disappear in the future.
D. He expressed his anger over the improper protection of languages.
9. What does the underlined word it in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Ariep's fear. B. Naati's fate.
C. Public concern over the crisis. D. Protecting endangered languages.
10. Why does the writer mention Lulamogi in Uganda?
A. To highlight the special culture in Uganda.
B. To stress the importance of a language to the community.
C. To show that native speakers in Uganda are nature-lovers
D. To prove that a language will easily be lost without proper protection.
11. Where is the text probably from?
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
D
Researchers were surprised to find green snow caused by blooming algae(藻)in the Antarctic Peninsula is expanding as temperatures increase.
Green snow alga is type of tiny organism(微生物)that can't be seen without a microscope. But when the organisms grow all together, they turn the snow bright green, which can even be spotted from space.
The algae are provided with more "habitable" environments to grow as warming temperatures create more wet snow.
Patches of green snow algae can be identified along the Antarctic: coastline, mostly in warmer areas, where average temperatures are slightly above 0℃ during the Southern Hemisphere's summer months of November to February. Researchers have found I, 679 separate growths of green algae on the snow surface, which cover an area of 1.9 square kilometers.
"The Antarctic Peninsula is the part of the region that is being affected by the most rapid warning , " said the researchers. This February abnormal temperatures hitting around 20℃ were recorded.
Researchers believe the organisms will expand as global temperatures rise.
However, while more algae will grow as snow melts faster, the distribution of the organisms is inseparable(分不开的)from bird populations, whose excrement(粪便)contains the substances that speed up the growth of the algae. "As the number of birds, especially penguins, is affected by warming temperatures, the snow algae could lose sources of nutrients to grow, " said Dr. Andrew Gray, the lead researcher of the study.
"An increase in the blooms could also lead to further melting of snow, " he continued. "A green snow algal bloom will reflect about 45% of light hitting it while fresh snow about 80%, so it will increase the rate at which snow melts in a localized area. "
According to the researchers, almost two-thirds of the algal blooms were found growing on small, low-lying islands. Besides, as the Antarctic Peninsula gets warmer, these islands could end up losing both their summer snow cover and algae, though most of the organisms lie in areas where they can spread to higher ground when snow melts.
12. What can we learn about the green snow algae?
A. They can even be seen from space.
B. They can only be found in Antarctica.
C. They grow well when there is wet snow.
D. They grow better when the temperature is below 0℃.
13. What may happen to the algae if Antarctica keeps getting warmer?
A. The algae may turn the whole Antarctica green.
B. The algae may move to smaller and lower-lying places.
C. The algae may grow more slowly for lacking nutrients.
D. The algae may reduce the number of birds in Antarctica.
14. What's the researchers' attitude toward the future of green snow algae?
A. Worried. B. Ambiguous. C. Puzzled. D. Uncaring.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Green Snow Puts Antarctica in Danger
B. Antarctica Is Experiencing Abnormal Weather
C. Green Snow Algae Is a Dangerous Threat to Snow
D. Climate Change Is Turning Snow in Antarctica Green
