Unit 8 Topic 3 重点词语、短语辨析
begin; start
begin和start均可意为“开始;发生;发起,两者可以互换,后面可以接动词不定式或V-ing形式。
当主语是无生命的事物或当这两个词用于进行时态时,或者当这两个词后面接表示心理状态的动词时常接不定式,而不接V-ing形式。如:
Tom began / started to know the answer. 汤姆开始知道答案了。
begin和start的不同之处在于当表示“(机器)开始;启动”时,或表示“创办;开设”时,或表示“动身;出发;启程”时,用start。
要表示一件事中断后“再开始”时,应用start again。如:
How do you start the car 你如何起动这辆小汽车?
I want to start a shop. 我想要开一家商店。
begin 表示的“开始”往往指从起点开始,强调一个过程的开始,反义词为end。begin again 意为“从头再来”。如:
Never mind. Let’s begin again. 没关系,让我们从头再来。
festival; holiday
festival意为“节日;节期”,指具有传统或历史意义的节日或庆祝活动,着重指人们在一起共同欢度的“节日”。如:Mid-autumn Festival, Spring Festival, Christmas 等,也可指定期举办的艺术节、音乐节等。如:
Our school has a music festival every fall. 我们学校每年秋季举办一次音乐节。
holiday意为“假日;休息日”,着重指按照法律和风俗习惯或为了纪念某一事件而规定停止工作的“假期”,其复数形式可以表示较长时间的假期。如:
She wants to Beijing for the summer holidays. 她打算去北京过暑假。
at the end of ...; by the end of ...
at the end of ... 意为“最后;到……的尽头”,可以指地点、场所,也可以指时间。如:
At the end of the lesson we sang a song. 那节课结束时我们唱了一首歌。
by the end of ... 意为“到……为止;在……结束时”,后面只能接时间。如:
We can learn 2,000 words by the end of this term. 到这个学期末,我们能学2000个单词。

【精彩点拨】 celebrate意为“庆祝”,用来表示庆祝节日或特殊的日子,如果表示祝贺某事的成功则应用congratulate。如:
Chinese people celebrate Spring Festival. 中国人庆祝春节。
We congratulated him on passing his exam. 他考试通过了,我们表示祝贺。
2. 【课本要点】It means the end of Spring Festival. (Section A) 这意味着春节的结束。
【精彩点拨】 mean意为“意思是;意味着”,后接名词、代词或V-ing形式。mean也可意为“想要;意欲”,此时其后应接动词不定式。如:
I mean waiting for him here. 我的意思是在这儿等他。
I didn’t mean to hurt him. 我本不想伤害他。
3. 【课本要点】 Before Christmas Day, people are busy preparing for it. (Section B) 圣诞节前,人们忙着为其作准备。
【精彩点拨】 busy意为“忙碌的”,常用结构为:be busy with sth. 意为“忙于某事”及be busy doing sth. 意为“忙着做某事”。如:

In China, celebrating Spring Festival is a big event. People usually start preparing for the festival one month before it comes. They prepare delicious food, and clean and decorate their homes.
Presentation
They also buy some new clothes. On the eve of the festival, the whole family gets together for a big dinner. People stay up and enjoy dumplings at midnight for good luck. On the first day of the lunar new year, children put on their new clothes and greet their parents. They are very happy to get lucky money from them.
