A
“We’re
all
sad,
and
we’re
a
little
worried……
We’re
sad
about
something
missing
in
childhood,”
psychologist
Michael
Thompson
told
900
early
childhood
educators
from
22
states
packed
into
a
lecture
hall
last
week.
“We
have
to
fight
back,”
he
declared.
“We’re
going
to
fight
for
play.”
It
is
estimated
that
since
the
1980s
the
average
American
children
have
8
to
12
fewer
hours
of
free
play
time
per
week.
Some
of
the
factors
behind
the
decline
have
been
there
for
decades,
others
are
more
recent.
Among
the
key
factors
are:
●
Parents
are
unwilling
to
let
their
kids
play
outside
on
their
own,
for
fear
of
injury
or
other
accidents,
and
organized
sports
and
other
structured
activities
take
up
a
large
part
of
a
child’s
non-school
hours.
●
More
hours
per
week
are
spent
by
kids
watching
TV,
playing
video
games,
using
the
Internet,
and
communicating
on
cell
phones.
●
More
importance
is
attached
to
formal
learning
in
preschool,
more
homework
for
primary
school
students
and
more
pressure
from
parents
on
young
children
to
quickly
acquire
academic
skills.
“Parents
are
more
self-conscious
and
competitive
than
in
the
past,”
Thompson
said.
“They’re
pushing
their
kids
to
do
better
than
others……Free
play
loses
out.
”
But
he
points
out
that
this
option
doesn’t
necessarily
breed
(培养)
creativity
and
can
lead
to
burnout
for
good
young
athletes
and
frustration
for
the
less
skilled.
He
is
also
concerned
that
preschools,
in
the
drive
to
prepare
students
for
the
academic
challenges
ahead,
are
reducing
the
opportunity
for
group
fantasy
play
—
and
thus
reducing
children’s
chances
to
learn
on
their
own
about
fairness,
kindness
and
other
social
interactions
(交往).
The
consequences
are
potentially
awful,
according
to
Thompson,
who
points
out
that
reduced
time
to
play
freely
with
other
children
is
producing
a
generation
of
unsociable
young
people
and
is
a
factor
behind
high
rates
of
weight
problems,
anxiety,
and
depression
among
youth.
“Without
enough
opportunity
for
forms
of
play
that
promote
creative
thinking,”
he
says,
“America’s
children
will
be
at
a
disadvantage
in
the
global
economy.”
Zoe
Chambers
was
a
successful
PR
(Public
Relations)
consultant
and
life
was
going
well.
She
had
a
great
job,
a
beautiful
flat
and
a
busy
social
life
in
London.
Then
one
evening
in
June
last
year,
she
received
a
text
message
telling
her
she
was
out
of
work.
“The
first
two
weeks
were
the
most
difficult
to
live
through,”
she
said.
“After
everything
I’d
done
for
the
company,
they
dismissed
me
by
text!
I
was
so
angry
and
I
just
didn’t
feel
like
looking
for
another
job.
I
hated
everything
about
the
city
and
my
life.”
Then,
Zoe
received
an
invitation
from
an
old
school
friend,
Kathy,
to
come
and
stay.
Kathy
and
her
husband,
Huw,
had
just
bought
a
farm
in
north-west
Wales.
Zoe
jumped
at
the
chance
to
spend
a
weekend
away
from
London,
and
now,
ten
months
later,
she
is
still
on
the
farm.
“The
moment
I
arrived
at
Kathy's
farm,
I
loved
it
and
I
knew
I
wanted
to
stay,"
said
Zoe.
“Everything
about
my
past
life
suddenly
seemed
meaningless.”
Zoe
has
been
working
on
the
farm
since
October
of
last
year
and
says
she
has
no
regrets.
“It's
a
hard
life,
physically
very
tiring,”
she
says.
“In
London
I
was
stressed
and
often
mentally
exhausted.
But
this
is
a
good,
healthy
tiredness.
Here,
all
I
need
to
put
me
in
a
good
mood
is
a
hot
bath
and
one
of
Kathy's
wonderful
dinners.”
Zoe
says
she
has
never
felt
bored
on
the
farm.
Every
day
brings
a
new
experience.
Kathy
has
been
teaching
her
how
to
ride
a
horse
and
she
has
learnt
to
drive
a
tractor.
Since
Christmas,
she
has
been
helping
with
the
lambing
―
watching
a
lamb
being
born
is
unbelievable.
She
says,
“It's
one
of
the
most
moving
experiences
I've
ever
had.
I
could
never
go
back
to
city
life
now.”

According
to
Thompson,

D
It
is
often
claimed
that
nuclear
energy
is
something
we
cannot
do
without.
We
live
in
a
consumer
society,
where
there
is
a
huge
demand
for
commercial
products
of
all
kinds.
Moreover,
an
increase
in
industrial
production
is
considered
to
be
one
solution
to
the
problem
of
mass
unemployment.
Such
an
increase
needs
an
abundant
and
cheap
energy
supply.
Many
people
believe
that
nuclear
energy
is
endless
and
economical.
There
are
a
number
of
other
advantages
in
the
use
of
nuclear
energy.
Firstly,
nuclear
power,
except
for
accidents,
is
clean.
A
further
advantage
is
that
a
nuclear
power
station
can
be
run
by
relatively
few
technical
and
managing
staff.
The
nuclear
power
station
represents
a
large
step
in
our
scientific
research
and,
whatever
the
anti-nuclear
group
says,
it
is
wrong
to
expect
a
return
to
more
primitive
sources
of
fuel.
However,
those
who
disagree
with
nuclear
energy
point
out
that
nuclear
power
stations
bring
a
direct
threat
not
only
to
the
environment
but
also
to
the
human
race.
Furthermore,
it
is
doubtful
whether
finally
nuclear
power
is
a
cheap
source
of
energy.
There
have,
for
example,
been
very
costly
accidents
in
America
and
Russia.
The
possibility
of
increases
in
the
cost
of
uranium
(铀)
and
the
cost
to
ensure
its
safety
could
price
nuclear
power
out
of
the
market.
In
the
long
run,
environmentalists
argue,
nuclear
energy
may
bring
about
the
destruction
of
the
human
race.
Thus,
if
we
wish
to
survive,
we
cannot
afford
nuclear
energy.
Though
nuclear
energy
programs
are
expanding,
which
assumes
a
continual
growth
in
industrial
production
and
consumer
demands,
it
is
doubtful
whether
this
growth
will
or
can
continue.
A.
competitive
B.
depressed
C.
hard-working
D.
sociable
C
Under
the
impression
that
if
you
want
to
lose
weight,
you
have
to
eat
less?
Well
apparently,
the
solution
may
not
be
quite
that
simple.
Instead,
some
scientists
in
the
UK
have
been
experimenting
with
ways
to
trick
the
body
into
feeling
full.
A
government-funded
team
has
been
testing
simple
foods
found
on
everyday
shopping
lists.
Bread,
cheese,
milk,
soup
and
sauces
can
all
be
developed
to
cause
the
brain
to
send
a
brain
signal
which
acts
as
an
appetite
suppression
(抑制).
Peter
Wilde,
Scientist
of
UK
Institute
of
Food
Research,
said,
“If
you
can
slow
down
the
digestion
of
fat
in
the
body,
the
undigested
fat
goes
further
down
the
small
intestine
and
then
it
sends
a
message
to
the
brain
to
reduce
your
appetite,
so
you
can
eat
a
normal-sized
meal
and
the
digestion
is
slowed
down
and
then
the
message
goes
to
your
brain
to
reduce
your
appetite
and
you
go
for
longer
without
being
hungry.”
The
researchers
insist
that
the
treated
foods
will
still
be
entirely
natural
products,
and
free
from
processing.
They
believe
helping
people
to
reduce
weight
this
way
is
beneficial
because
it
allows
them
to
eat
normally.
The
scientists
also
think
their
treatment
could
be
taken
into
snacks
to
make
sure
people
don’t
eat
too
much.
The
research
is
still
at
the
experimental
stage
and
it
will
be
at
least
a
year
before
their
techniques
can
be
used
in
a
large
scale
human
trial.
Having
weighed
up
the
arguments
on
both
sides,
it
seems
there
are
good
economic
and
environmental
reasons
for
sources
of
energy
other
than
nuclear
power.
29.
What
does
the
passage
mainly
tell
us?
33.
According
to
the
passage,
an
increase
in
industrial
production
can
.
A
.People
can
lose
more
weight
by
eating
natural
food
products.
B.
Eating
less
in
meals
can
make
people
