Baggy
has
become
the
first
dog
in
the
UK—and
potentially
the
world—to
join
the
fight
against
air
pollution
by
recording
pollutant
levels
near
the
ground.
Baggy
wears
a
pollution
monitor
on
her
collar
so
she
can
take
data
measurements
close
to
the
ground.
Her
monitor
has
shown
that
air
pollution
levels
are
higher
closer
to
ground
level,
which
has
helped
highlight
concerns
that
babies
and
young
kids
may
be
at
higher
risk
of
developing
lung
problems.
Conventional
air
pollution
monitors
are
normally
fixed
on
lampposts
at
about
nine
feet
in
the
air.
However,
since
Baggy
stands
at
about
the
same
height
as
a
child
in
a
pushchair(婴儿车),
she
frequently
records
pollution
levels
which
are
much
higher
than
the
data
gathered
by
the
Environment
A
gency.
The
doggy
data
research
was
the
idea
of
Baggy's
13-year-old
owner
Tom
Hunt
and
his
dad
Matt.
The
English
youngster
noticed
that
pollution
levels
are
around
two-thirds
higher
close
to
the
ground
than
they
are
in
the
air
at
the
height
where
they
are
recorded
by
the
agency.
Tom
has
since
reported
the
shocking
findings
to
the
government
in
an
attempt
to
emphasise
that
babies
are
at
higher
risk
of
developing
asthma(哮喘).
Matt
Hunt
said
he
was
"very
proud"
of
his
son
because
“when
the
boy
gets
an
idea,
he
keeps
his
head
down
and
gets
on
with
it,
and
he
really
does
want
to
do
some
good
and
stop
young
kids
from
getting
asthma."
“Tom
built
up
a
passion
for
environmental
protection
at
a
very
early
age,"
Matt
added.
“He
became
very
interested
in
gadgets(小装置).
About
one
year
ago,
he
got
this
new
piece
of
tech
which
is
like
a
test
tube.
One
Sunday
afternoon,
we
went
out
to
do
some
monitoring,
and
he
said,
why
don't
we
put
it
on
Baggy's
collar
and
let
her
monitor
the
pollution?'So
we
did
it."
Tom
said,
"Most
of
the
time,
Baggy
is
just
like
any
other
dog.
But
for
the
rest
of
the
time
she
is
a
super
dog,
and
we
are
all
really
proud
of
her."
4.
With
a
monitor
on
her
collar,
Baggy
can
____________.
A.
take
pollutant
readings
B.
record
pollutant
levels
C.
process
collected
data
D.
reduce
air
pollution
5.
What
can
we
learn
from
the
Baggy
data?
A.
High
places
are
free
of
air
pollution.
B.
Higher
pushchairs
are
more
risky
for
kids.
C.
Conventional
monitors
are
more
reliable.
D.
Air
is
more
polluted
closer
to
the
ground.
6.
What
is
Tom's
purpose
of
doing
the
research?
A.
To

very
early
age,"
Matt
added.
“He

C
Sugar
cane(甘蔗)contains
around
10%
sugar.
But
that
means
it
contains
around
90%
non-sugar—the
material
known
as
bagasse
(甘蔗渣)which
remains
once
the
sugar-bearing
juice
is
squeezed
out.
World
production
of
cane
sugar
was
185
million
tonnes
in
2017
,
which
results
in
a
lot
of
bagasse.
At
the
moment,
most
of
it
is
burned.
But
Zhu
Hongli,
a
mechanical
engineer
at
Northeastern
University,
in
Boston,
thinks
it
can
be
put
into
better
use.
As
she,
and
her
colleagues
describe,
in
Matter
this
week,
with
a
bit
of
improving
bagasse
makes
an
excellent
and
biodegradable
(可生
物降解的)replacement
for
the
plastic
used
for
disposable
food
containers
such
as
coffee
cups.
Dr.
Zhu
is
not
the
first
person
to
have
this
idea.
But
previous
attempts
tended
not
to
survive
contact
with
liquids.
She
knew
from
previous
research
that
the
main
reason
why
past
efforts
fell
to
pieces
when
wet
is
that
bagasse
is
composed
of
short
fibres
which
are
unable
to
hold
the
finished
product.
She
therefore
sought'
to
insert
a
suitably
long-fibred
substance.
Bamboo
seemed
to
be
the
best
choice.
It
grows
quickly
/degrades
readily
and
has
appropriately
long
fibres.
And
it
worked.
When
the
researchers
blended
bamboo
remaining
into
bagasse,
they
found
that
the
result
had
a
strong
crossing
of
short
and
long
fibres.
To
put
their
new
material
through
its
paces,
Dr.
Zhu
and
her
colleagues
first
poured
hot
oil
onto
it
and
found
that,
rather
than
passing
through
the
material,
as
it
would
have
with
previous,
bagasse
products,
the
oil
was
resisted
by
their
invention.
They
also
found
that
when
they
made
a
cup
out
of
the
stuff
and
filled
it
with
water
heated
almost
to
boiling
point,
the
cup
remained
unbroken
for
more
than
two
hours.
Though
this
is
not
as
long
as
a
plastic
cup
would
Hast,
it-is
long
enough
for
all
practical
purposes.
8.
What
do
we
know
about
bagasse?
A.
It
is
widely
used.
B.
It
is
usually
wasted.
C.
It
can
not
be
degraded.
D.
It
takes
up
10%
of
sugar
cane.
9.
Why
do
the
previous
attempts
fail?
A.
The
cups
are
not
disposable.
B.
The
fibres
of
bagasse
are
short.
C.
The
plastic
can
not
be
replaced.
D.
The
material
is
not
biodegradable.
10.
What
is
special
about
Zhu's
invention?
A.
It
can
let
oil
pass
through.
B.
It
can
be
boiled
in
the
water.
C.
It
can
hold
liquid
and
resist
heat.
D.
It
can
reduce
the
use
of
bamboo.
11.
What
would
be
the
best
title
for
the
text?
A.
New
Bamboo
Containers
B.
A
New
Application
of
Fibres
C.
Young
and
Promising
Materials
D.
A

of
their
possessions
and
then
holding
those
objects
until
a
ransom
in
the
form
of
food
is
paid.
But
Jean-Baptiste
Leca
of
the
University
of
Lethbridge,
in
Canada,
wondered
whether
these
monkeys
are
cleverer
still.
Sometimes,
they
do
not
accept
the
first
offer
and
hold
out
for
more.
He
therefore
asked
himself
whether
they
are
able
to
assess
how
valuable
an
object
is
to
its
owner,
and
factor
that
into
their
negotiations.
Dr.
Leca
and
his
colleagues
conducted
their
experiment
by
wandering
around
the
temple
with
video
cameras,
recording
the
activities
of
the
monkeys.
Every
time
they
saw
a
monkey
show
interest
in
a
particular
tourist,
they
recorded
the
interaction.
To
work
out
what
was
going
on,
they
had
first
to
establish
the
relative
values
of
food
rewards
to
monkeys,
and
of
stealable
objects
to
people.
To
confirm
which
stealable
objects
are
most
valued
by
people
they
divided
them
into
six
classes:
empty
containers,
such
as
phone
cases
and
plastic
bottles;
accessories
(搭配物)
such
as
hairpins
and
key
rings;
hats
and
shoes;
spectacles
and
sunglasses;
and
electronics
and
wallets.
They
then
observed
how
often
victims
bothered
to
bargain
with
the
thief
for
the
return
of
property
belonging
to
different
classes,
and
thus
classified
objects
into
low
value,
medium
value
and
high
value.
They
found
that
monkeys
do,
indeed,
have
a
complicated
sense
of
what
they
are
doing

at
least,
adults
and
sub-adults
do.
These
animals
have
a
preference
for
stealing
high-value
items,
and
will
often
hold
out
either
for
more
rewards,
or
for
better
ones,
if
they
are
in
possession
of
such
items.
But
this
is
something
that
they
have
to
learn
how
to
do
as
they
grow
up.
Young
monkeys
make
no
such
distinctions,
and
sub-adults
are
less
good
at
doing
so
than
adults.
12.
What
is
the
purpose
of
Leca's
research?
A.
To
prove
monkeys
are
cleverer
than
men.
B.
To
find
out
what
is
valuable
for
monkeys.
C.
To
record
the
negotiations
between
monkeys.
D.
To
make
sure
monkeys
can
judge
item
values.
13.
What
does
the
underlined
word
"ransom"
in
Paragraph
1
mean?
A.
Bill.
B.
Reward.
C.
Tax.
D.
Rent.
14.
How
are
the
values
of
objects
classified
in
Paragraph
3?
A.
By
the
material
of
objects.
B.
By
the
preference
of
victims.
C.
By
the
frequency
of
bargaining
D.
By
the
buying
price
of
objects.
15.
What
can
we
infer
from
the
last
paragraph?
A.
Monkeys'
stealing
is
an
acquired
skill.
B.
All
monkeys
prefer
high-value
items.
C.
Monkeys
have
a
simple
sense
of
acts.
D.
Young
monkeys
can
evaluate
items.
【答案】12.

A
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。巴厘岛的乌鲁瓦图寺庙的长尾庙猴是有名的小偷,它们偷走游客的财物并要求游客用食物作赎金。Leca和他的同事们开展了一项实验研究这些猴子是否能够判断物品的价值,并发现这些猴子具备这些技能,它们的偷窃技能是后天习得的。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“He
therefore
asked
himself
whether
they
are
able
to
assess
how
valuable
an
object
is
to
its
owner,
and
factor
that
into
their
negotiations.”(因此,他问自己,它们是否能够评估一件物品对其所有者有多大价值,并将此因素考虑到谈判中。)可知,Leca的研究的目的是确认猴子能够判断物品的价值。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段第三句中的“robbing
visitors
of
their
possessions”(抢劫来访者的财物)和“holding
those
objects”(拿着这些东西)以及“in
the
form
of
food”(以食物的形式)可知,此处是指猴子们抢劫来访者的财物,让来访者用食物来赎回自己的财物。所以ransom意为“赎金”。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第二句“They
then
observed
how
often
victims
bothered
to
bargain
with
the
thief
for
the
return
of
property
belonging
to
different
classes,
and
thus
classified
objects
into
low
value,
medium
value
and
high
value.
”(然后,他们观察受害者为归还属于不同类别的财产而与窃贼讨价还价的频率,从而将物品分为低价值、中价值和高价值。)可知,物品的价值是根据讨价还价的频率来分类的。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段最后两句“But
this
is
something
that
they
have
to
learn
how
to
do
as
they
grow
up.
Young
monkeys
make
no
such
distinctions,
and
sub-adults
are
less
good
at
doing
so
than
adults.”(但这是它们必须在成长过程中学会的。年幼的猴子没有这样的区别,而未成年的猴子在这方面不如成年猴子擅长。)可知,猴子的偷窃是一种后天习得的技能。故选A。

【解析】
【分析】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者离开祖国去加拿大学习,结果语言成了一大障碍,为此作者通过书面交流和提醒同事说慢点的方法,让这一情况得到了改善。
【16题详解】
根据上文“When
I
decided
to
leave
my
home
country
to
pursue
a
degree
in
Canada,
I
hadn’t
expected
that
communication
would

in
my
teens
and
scored
well
on
English
tests.(我十几岁的时候上过英语课,在英语考试中成绩很好)”可知,上文提到作者要去加拿大读书,后文又提到作者十几岁时英语成绩很好,说明作者一开始觉得自己英语没问题,在加拿大沟通不成问题。故C选项“我原以为我能用英语很容易地表达自己”符合语境,故选C。
【17题详解】
根据上文“But
soon
after
my
arrival
in
Canada,
I
realized
how
wrong
I
was.
In
research
discussions,
surrounded
by

that
response.
Constantly

would
say
next,
I
had
a
hard

remaining
focused
in
conversations.(最后,我试图用正确的英语表达这一回答。我一直在想我接下来要说什么,很难在谈话中集中注意力)”可知,上文提到作者每次听到英语时要先在脑海里翻译成母语,再进行回答,E选项中a
response对应后文中that
response。故E选项“然后,我必须仔细地考虑一下,并想个回答”符合语境,故选E。
【18题详解】
根据上文“But
when
I
again
failed
to
say
exactly
what
I
meant
in
a
meeting
a
few
months
later,
a
simple
idea
occurred
to
me.(但几个月后的一次会议上,我又一次没能说清楚我的意思,这时我想到了一个简单的主意)”以及后文“Communicating

I
had
more

think
and
comfortably
express
my
thoughts.
Over
time,
this
practice
helped
improve
my
English
significantly.(通过电子邮件与我的同事交流,我有更多的时间去思考和舒服地表达我的想法。久而久之,这种练习让我的英语有了很大的提高)”可知,本句应承接上文说明这个主意是什么,结合后文作者写电子邮件,可推测作者想出的办法是通过书面形式而非口语,进行参与讨论。故B选项“为什么不以书面形式参与讨论?”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据后文“I
decided
to
remind
them
that
English

team
seemed
slightly
surprised.(我决定提醒他们英语不是我的第一语言。我让他们说得慢一点,帮助我跟上讨论。让别人注意到可能被视为弱点的东西有点尴尬。一开始,研究小组的其他成员似乎有点惊讶)”可知,后文提到作者主动提醒他人英语不是自己的第一语言,让别人说得慢一点,即对同事坦白自己的缺点,A选项中colleagues对应后文中them。故A选项“另外,我学会了对同事开诚布公”符合语境,故选A。
【20题详解】
根据上文“But
the
dynamics
quickly
improved.
They
seemed
to
become
more
aware
of
how
they
were
speaking,
and
I
felt
more
comfortable
joining
in
the
conversation.(但情况很快得到了改善。他们似乎更清楚自己在说什么,我也更自在地加入了他们的谈话)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,上文提到作者和同事的沟通情况有了改善,说明在他们双方的努力下,作者也在逐渐克服语言障碍。故F选项“通过双方的努力,我们可以克服语言障碍”符合语境,故选F。

【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了上海的筷子文化及筷子在中国传统文化中的地位和作用。
【36题详解】
考查动词不定式作目的状语。句意:近日,某组织已采取措施将筷子列入上海市非物质文化遗产名录。分析句子成分可知,句中已有谓语动词has
taken,无连词,可知这是一个简单句,所以设空处是非谓语动词;根据句意可知,设空处表示目的,表目的要用动词不定式。故填to
add。
【37题详解】
考查同位语从句。句意:该组织的主席徐华龙说,尽管筷子是中国特有的东西,但在现代中国,人们越来越忽视筷子。根据句意可知,设空处对fact的内容进行解释说明,所以这是一个同位语从句;分析同位语从句句子成分可知,从句不缺名词性成分且句意完整,所以要填that。故填that。
【38题详解】
考查现在完成时。句意:中国的邻国日本已经把8月4日定为筷子节。根据时间副词already可知,句子要用现在完成时;主语
China’s
neighbor是第三人称单数,助动词要用has。故填has
set。
【39题详解】
考查非谓语动词作定语,句意:上海的筷子文化可以追溯到唐代,当时这些在城隍庙地区制造的物品享有广泛的流行。分析句子成分可知,when引导定语从句修饰Tang
Dynasty,主句为Chopstick
culture
in
Shanghai
dates
back
to
the
Tang
Dynasty,从句为these
items
enjoyed
widespread
popularity,可推断设空处是非谓语动词;根据句意可知,设空处作定语修饰名词items,与逻辑主语items之间是被动关系,表示被动要用过去分词。故填made。
【40题详解】
考查动名词作宾语。句意:作为商埠开放后,上海为拥有第一条机械化筷子生产线而自豪,生产的筷子不仅供应中南海、钓鱼台国宾馆,还作为礼品赠送给外国朋友。设空处位于介词of后面充当宾语,要用动名词形式。故填having。
【41题详解】
考查非限制性定语从句的关系代词。句意:作为商埠开放后,上海为拥有第一条机械化筷子生产线而自豪,生产的筷子不仅供应中南海、钓鱼台国宾馆,还作为礼品赠送给外国朋友。根据句意可知,设空句对名词chopsticks起补充说明作用,所以这是一个非限制性定语从句;分析非限制性定语从句句子成分可知,先行词chopsticks在从句中充当主语,先行词指物,所以要用关系代词which。故填which。
【42题详解】
考查介词。句意:作为商埠开放后,上海为拥有第一条机械化筷子生产线而自豪,生产的筷子不仅供应中南海、钓鱼台国宾馆,还作为礼品赠送给外国朋友。根据句意可知,设空处表达“作为”的意思,所以要填as。故填as。
【43题详解】
考查副词修饰动词。句意:目前世界上至少有18亿人使用筷子,虽然很小,但它是传承中华文明的一种手段。根据句意可知,设空处位于动词use前面起修饰作用,所以要用副词形式。故填currently。
【44题详解】
考查不定冠词。句意:目前世界上至少有18亿人使用筷子,虽然很小,但它是传承中华文明的一种手段。means意为“方法,手段”,是可数名词,前面没有限定词,所以要填冠词;此处没有特指,且means第一个发音为元音发音,所以要填a。故填a。
【45题详解】
考查名词作宾语。句意:人们认为,认识习俗的文化价值,有助于促进中国传统。设空处位于介词in后面充当宾语,且前面有定冠词the,所以设空处要用名词形式;promote的名词形式为promotion,为不可数名词。故填promotion。

第二节(满分25分)
47.
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Henry
once
worked
in
a
middle
school
in
a
remote
area.
He
loved
to
teach
the
teenagers.
He
worked
to
understand
what
his
students
were
thinking
and
feeling
in
order
to
meet
their
needs.
When
a
student
was
struggling,
he
would
work
harder
to
show
the
child
that
he
or
she
was
capable
and
cared
for.
He
would
try
everything
in
order
to
help
every
student
achieve
success
in
and
out
of
the
classroom.
But
he
would
never
discover
that
the
impact
his
small
act
of
kindness
had
on
one
student
after
he
left
the
profession
to
join
the
navy,
Henry
was
teaching
science
then,
there
was
one
girl
who
sat
at
the
front
of
the
class
and
was
filled
with
typical
middle
school
pain
and
anxiety.
Her
name
was
Mary.
She
was
a
newcomer
then.
She
wasn't
accepted
by
the
classmates
that
soon.
She
was
quiet
and
kept
to
herself
and
always
writing
a
journal
during
lessons.
Henry
was
looking
for
a
chance
to
give
her
a
hand
but
had
realized
this
task
was
tough.
That
class
Henry
decided
to
look
over
her
shoulder
and
see
what
she
was
writing.
On
a
small
piece
of
paper
he
saw
the
painful
words
“I
am
not
good
enough.
I'm
ugly.
I’m
stupid.
No
one
likes
me.
I
hate
myself.”
The
girl
was
absorbed
in
her
loneliness
and
sadness
and
didn't
realize
she
was
overseers.
This
task
was
more
challenging
because
he
had
never
seen
a
young
girl
was
so
disappointed
and
sad.
Great
teachers
knew
that
putting
extra
effort,
a
kind
heart
and
soul
into
caring
for
his
students
made
all
the
difference.
Without
thinking,
Henry
snatched
(一把抓起)
the
notebook
from
her
and
started
writing
in
it
“You're
great,
you're
beautiful,
you're
intelligent,
you're
loved”.
The
opposite
of
everything
she
wrote,
then
handed
it
back.
He
smiled
at
her
with
encouragement
saying
nothing.
Mary
was
surprised
at
her
teacher's
behavior.
But
when
she
read
the
words
he
wrote,
tears
welled
down
her
face.

Baggy
has
become
the
first
dog
in
the
UK—and
potentially
the
world—to
join
the
fight
against
air
pollution
by
recording
pollutant
levels
near
the
ground.
Baggy
wears
a
pollution
monitor
on
her
collar
so
she
can
take
data
measurements
close
to
the
ground.
Her
monitor
has
shown
that
air
pollution
levels
are
higher
closer
to
ground
level,
which
has
helped
highlight
concerns
that
babies
and
young
kids
may
be
at
higher
risk
of
developing
lung
problems.
Conventional
air
pollution
monitors
are
normally
fixed
on
lampposts
at
about
nine
feet
in
the
air.
However,
since
Baggy
stands
at
about
the
same
height
as
a
child
in
a
pushchair(婴儿车),
she
frequently
records
pollution
levels
which
are
much
higher
than
the
data
gathered
by
the
Environment
A
gency.
The
doggy
data
research
was
the
idea
of
Baggy's
13-year-old
owner
Tom
Hunt
and
his
dad
Matt.
The
English
youngster
noticed
that
pollution
levels
are
around
two-thirds
higher
close
to
the
ground
than
they
are
in
the
air
at
the
height
where
they
are
recorded
by
the
agency.
Tom
has
since
reported
the
shocking
findings
to
the
government
in
an
attempt
to
emphasise
that
babies
are
at
higher
risk
of
developing
asthma(哮喘).
Matt
Hunt
said
he
was
"very
proud"
of
his
son
because
“when
the
boy
gets
an
idea,
he
keeps
his
head
down
and
gets
on
with
it,
and
he
really
does
want
to
do
some
good
and
stop
young
kids
from
getting
asthma."
“Tom
built
up
a
passion
for
environmental
protection
at
a
very
early
age,"
Matt
added.
“He
became
very
interested
in
gadgets(小装置).
About
one
year
ago,
he
got
this
new
piece
of
tech
which
is
like
a
test
tube.
One
Sunday
afternoon,
we
went
out
to
do
some
monitoring,
and
he
said,
why
don't
we
put
it
on
Baggy's
collar
and
let
her
monitor
the
pollution?'So
we
did
it."
Tom
said,
"Most
of
the
time,
Baggy
is
just
like
any
other
dog.
But
for
the
rest
of
the
time
she
is
a
super
dog,
and
we
are
all
really
proud
of
her."
4.
With
a
monitor
on
her
collar,
Baggy
can
____________.
A.
take
pollutant
readings
B.
record
pollutant
levels
C.
process
collected
data
D.
reduce
air
pollution
5.
What
can
we
learn
from
the
Baggy
data?
A.
High
places
are
free
of
air
pollution.
B
Higher
pushchairs
are
more
risky
for
kids.
C.
Conventional
monitors
are
more
reliable.
D.
Air
is
more
polluted
closer
to
the
ground.
6.
What
is
Tom's
purpose
of
doing
the
research?
A.
To
warn
of
a
health
risk.
B.
To
find
out
pollution
sources.
C.
To
test
his
new
monitor.
D.
To
prove
Baggy's
abilities.
7.
According
to
the
passage,
which
word
can
best
describe
Tom
Hunt?
A.
Modest.
B.
Generous.
C.
Creative.
D.
Outgoing.
C
Sugar
cane(甘蔗)contains
around
10%
sugar.
But
that
means
it
contains
around
90%
non-sugar—the
material
known
as
bagasse
(甘蔗渣)which
remains
once
the
sugar-bearing
juice
is
squeezed
out.
World
production
of
cane
sugar
was
185
million
tonnes
in
2017
,
which
results
in
a
lot
of
bagasse.
At
the
moment,
most
of
it
is
burned.
But
Zhu
Hongli,
a
mechanical
engineer
at
Northeastern
University,
in
Boston,
thinks
it
can
be
put
into
better
use.
As
she,
and
her
colleagues
describe,
in
Matter
this
week,
with
a
bit
of
improving
bagasse
makes
an
excellent
and
biodegradable
(可生
物降解的)replacement
for
the
plastic
used
for
disposable
food
containers
such
as
coffee
cups.
Dr.
Zhu
is
not
the
first
person
to
have
this
idea.
But
previous
attempts
tended
not
to
survive
contact
with
liquids.
She
knew
from
previous
research
that
the
main
reason
why
past
efforts
fell
to
pieces
when
wet
is
that
bagasse
is
composed
of
short
fibres
which
are
unable
to
hold
the
finished
product.
She
therefore
sought'
to
insert
a
suitably
long-fibred
substance.
Bamboo
seemed
to
be
the
best
choice.
It
grows
quickly
/degrades
readily
and
has
appropriately
long
fibres.
And
it
worked.
When
the
researchers
blended
bamboo
remaining
into
bagasse,
they
found
that
the
result
had
a
strong
crossing
of
short
and
long
fibres.
To
put
their
new
material
through
its
paces,
Dr.
Zhu
and
her
colleagues
first
poured
hot
oil
onto
it
and
found
that,
rather
than
passing
through
the
material,
as
it
would
have
with
previous,
bagasse
products,
the
oil
was
resisted
by
their
invention.
They
also
found
that
when
they
made
a
cup
out
of
the
stuff
and
filled
it
with
water
heated
almost
to
boiling
point,
the
cup
remained
unbroken
for
more
than
two
hours.
Though
this
is
not
as
long
as
a
plastic
cup
would
Hast,
it-is
long
enough
for
all
practical
purposes.
8.
What
do
we
know
about
bagasse?
A.
It
is
widely
used.
B.
It
is
usually
wasted.
C.
It
can
not
be
degraded.
D.
It
takes
up
10%
of
sugar
cane.
9.
Why
do
the
previous
attempts
fail?
A.
The
cups
are
not
disposable.
B.
The
fibres
of
bagasse
are
short.
C.
The
plastic
can
not
be
replaced.
D.
The
material
is
not
biodegradable.
10.
What
is
special
about
Zhu's
invention?
A.
It
can
let
oil
pass
through.
B.
It
can
be
boiled
in
the
water.
C.
It
can
hold
liquid
and
resist
heat.
D.
It
can
reduce
the
use
of
bamboo.
11.
What
would
be
the
best

If
you
visit
Uluwatu
temple
in
Bali,
be
cautious.
The
long-tailed
temple
monkeys
there
are
well-known
thieves.
Since
a
long
time
ago,
they
have
made
a
living
by
robbing
visitors
of
their
possessions
and
then
holding
those
objects
until
a
ransom
in
the
form
of
food
is
paid.
But
Jean-Baptiste
Leca
of
the
University
of
Lethbridge,
in
Canada,
wondered
whether
these
monkeys
are
cleverer
still.
Sometimes,
they
do
not
accept
the
first
offer
and
hold
out
for
more.
He
therefore
asked
himself
whether
they
are
able
to
assess
how
valuable
an
object
is
to
its
owner,
and
factor
that
into
their
negotiations.
Dr.
Leca
and
his
colleagues
conducted
their
experiment
by
wandering
around
the
temple
with
video
cameras,
recording
the
activities
of
the
monkeys.
Every
time
they
saw
a
monkey
show
interest
in
a
particular
tourist,
they
recorded
the
interaction.
To
work
out
what
was
going
on,
they
had
first
to
establish
the
relative
values
of
food
rewards
to
monkeys,
and
of
stealable
objects
to
people.
To
confirm
which
stealable
objects
are
most
valued
by
people,
they
divided
them
into
six
classes:
empty
containers,
such
as
phone
cases
and
plastic
bottles;
accessories
(搭配物)
such
as
hairpins
and
key
rings;
hats
and
shoes;
spectacles
and
sunglasses;
and
electronics
and
wallets.
They
then
observed
how
often
victims
bothered
to
bargain
with
the
thief
for
the
return
of
property
belonging
to
different
classes,
and
thus
classified
objects
into
low
value,
medium
value
and
high
value.
They
found
that
monkeys
do,
indeed,
have
a
complicated
sense
of
what
they
are
doing

at
least,
adults
and
sub-adults
do.
These
animals
have
a
preference
for
stealing
high-value
items,
and
will
often
hold
out
either
for
more
rewards,
or
for
better
ones,
if
they
are
in
possession
of
such
items.
But
this
is
something
that
they
have
to
learn
how
to
do
as
they
grow
up.
Young
monkeys
make
no
such
distinctions,
and
sub-adults
are
less
good
at
doing
so
than
adults.
12.
What
is
the
purpose
of
Leca's
research?
A.
To
prove
monkeys
are
cleverer
than
men.
B.
To
find
out
what
is
valuable
for
monkeys.
C.
To
record
the
negotiations
between
monkeys.
D.
To
make
sure
monkeys
can
judge
item
values.
13.
What
does
the
underlined
word
"ransom"
in
Paragraph
1
mean?
A.
Bill.
B.
Reward.
C.
Tax.
D.
Rent.
14.
How
are
the
values
of
objects
classified
in
Paragraph
3?
A.
By
the
material
of
objects.
B.
By
the
preference
of
victims.
C.
By
the
frequency
of
bargaining.
D.
By
the
buying
price
of
objects.
15.
What
can
we
infer
from
the
last
paragraph?
A.
Monkeys'
stealing
is
an
acquired
skill.
B.
All
monkeys
prefer
high-value
items.
C.
Monkeys
have
a
simple
sense
of
acts.
D.
Young
monkeys
can
evaluate
items.

When
I
decided
to
leave
my
home
country
to
pursue
a
degree
in
Canada,
I
hadn’t
expected
that
communication
would
be
an
issue.____16____I
took
English
lessons
in
my
teens
and
scored
well
on
English
tests.
But
soon
after
my
arrival
in
Canada,
I
realized
how
wrong
I
was.
In
research
discussions,
surrounded
by
native
English
speakers,
I
had
to
be
careful.
I
needed
to
consciously
follow
each
conversation
and
translate
it
to
my
native
language.____17____Finally,
I
tried
to
find
the
right
English
words
to
communicate
that
response.
Constantly
thinking
about
what
I
would
say
next,
I
had
a
hard
time
remaining
focused
in
conversations.
But
when
I
again
failed
to
say
exactly
what
I
meant
in
a
meeting
a
few
months
later,
a
simple
idea
occurred
to
me.
____18____Communicating
with
my
colleagues
by
e-mail,
I
had
more
time
to
think
and
comfortably
express
my
thoughts.
Over
time,
this
practice
helped
improve
my
English
significantly.
____19____I
decided
to
remind
them
that
English
is
not
my
first
language.
I
asked
them
to
speak
more
slowly
to
help
me
follow
the
discussions.
It
was
a
little
awkward
to
draw
attention
to
what
might
be
seen
as
a
weakness.
And
at
first,
the
other
members
of
the
research
team
seemed
slightly
surprised.
But
the
dynamics
quickly
improved.
They
seemed
to
become
more
aware
of
how
they
were
speaking,
and
I
felt
more
comfortable
joining
in
the
conversation.____20____
A.
Plus,
I
learned
to
be
open
with
my
colleagues.
B.
Why
not
contribute
to
the
discussion
in
writing?
C.
I
had
thought
I
could
express
myself
in
English
easily.
D.
Gradually
I
grew
uncomfortable
with
oral
communication.
E.
Then,
I
had
to
reflect
carefully
on
it
and
think
of
a
response.
F.
With
efforts
on
both
sides,
we
could
overcome
language
barriers.
G.
How
can
one
deny
the
significance
of
effective
communication?

always
writing
a
journal
during
lessons.
Henry
was
looking
for
a
chance
to
give
her
a
hand
but
had
realized
this
task
was
tough.
That
class
Henry
decided
to
look
over
her
shoulder
and
see
what
she
was
writing.
On
a
small
piece
of
paper
he
saw
the
painful
words
“I
am
not
good
enough.
I'm
ugly.
I’m
stupid.
No
one
likes
me.
I
hate
myself.”
The
girl
was
absorbed
in
her
loneliness
and
sadness
and
didn't
realize
she
was
overseers.
This
task
was
more
challenging
because
he
had
never
seen
a
young
girl
was
so
disappointed
and
sad.
Great
teachers
knew
that
putting
extra
effort,
a
kind
heart
and
soul
into
caring
for
his
students
made
all
the
difference.
Without
thinking,
Henry
snatched
(一把抓起)
the
notebook
from
her
and
started
writing
in
it
“You're
great,
you're
beautiful,
you're
intelligent,
you're
loved”.
The
opposite
of
everything
she
wrote,
then
handed
it
back.
He
smiled
at
her
with
encouragement
saying
nothing.
Mary
was
surprised
at
her
teacher's
behavior.
But
when
she
read
the
words
he
wrote,
tears
welled
down
her
face.
