Medicine comes in lots of different packages. Painkillers in a tablet can make your headache go away. Antibiotic cream from a tube can prevent your cuts from becoming infected. But can medicine come packaged in chicken eggs
A team of scientists from Scotland says yes. They’ve engineered special chickens that lay eggs with disease-treating drugs inside.
These drugs are made of molecules called proteins. Animals make thousands of proteins — they’re the main ingredient (成分) in skin, hair, milk, and meat. Since animals can make proteins easily, they’re good candidates for making protein drugs.
Researchers have already made cows, sheep, and goats that pump out protein drugs in their milk. But chickens are cheaper to take care of, need less room, and grow faster than these other animals. Those qualities could make chickens a better choice to become living drug factories, says Simon Lillico of the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, Scotland.
Lillico and a team of researchers changed chickens’ DNA — the code that tells cells how to make proteins — so that the birds’ cells made two protein drugs. One drug can treat skin cancer, and the other treats a nerve disease called multiple sclerosis.
The scientists altered the chickens’ DNA so that the birds made these drugs only in their egg whites. This protects the chickens’ bodies from the drugs’ possible harmful effects and makes it easy for scientists to collect the drugs.
These special chickens can pass on their drug-laying abilities to their chicks. So far, the Scottish researchers have bred five generations of drug-producing birds.
The scientists need to improve these chickens before they roost in drug companies’ labs. The birds don’t make enough drugs to treat people yet. But once the researchers perfect their technique, you might eventually take your medicine sunny-side up.
36. Traditionally, medicine comes packaged except _______.
A. in a tablet B. in a bottle C. in a chicken egg D. in a tube

D. It’s harmful to change the chickens’ DNA.
39. What’s the main idea of this passage
A. Chickens are a better choice to become drug factories.
B. How to raise the chickens that lay eggs with drugs inside.
C. The chickens will make drugs in their whole eggs in the future.
D. The importance of the technique of changing animals’ DNA.
(B) Finding acceptance is a natural desire of most people. When we are young, it is important for us to be accepted by a group and to be seen as “cool” by our friends and classmates. To do this, we will often take up the views and interests of the group rather than develop our own.
Over time, however, we have the opportunity to learn to accept ourselves. People who have done this are confident in their true abilities; they do not feel the need to create a facade to impress other people. They are concerned with whether their actions produce worthwhile results rather than with how they are seen by others.
Less secure (有把握的) people are quite different. Instead of finding security in themselves, they look for other people to provide it. This kind of person constantly agrees with everything others suggest, for fear of having their own ideas rejected. Secure people do not give up when faced with a difficult situation; they say “I can” rather than “I can’t”. Knowing that each day is an opportunity to use their talents to acquire good health, good friendships, and great happiness, they always do their best.
Recognizing the details that we cannot change about ourselves is also a sign of personal growth. We cannot change our height, so why waste energy complaining about being short Our energy would be better spent on more constructive projects. Instead of thinking about personal characteristics we are not satisfied with, we ought to focus more on what we are good at. Such expressions as “love yourself” are about self-acceptance and confidence, as well as honesty and morality. We should consider them to be good advice, and treat them as signposts showing the way to happiness within.
40. The purpose of the author is to tell us _______.
A. the differences between secure and less secure people
B. the importance of accepting ourselves
C. how to find happiness within
D. how to become secure people
41. Less secure people are more likely to find a sense of security by _______.
A. seeking agreement from others B. giving themselves up to others
C. finding fault with others D. changing themselves
42. Which of the following is a typical way of doing things of secure people
A. Asking others for advice before taking action.
B. Putting the interests of others above their own.
C. Being focused on people’s disadvantages.
D. Devoting their energy to more constructive projects.
43. The underlined word “facade” in the second paragraph probably refers to _______.
A. a kind of behavior to hide one’s true feelings
B. a polite way to please others
C. a special measure to attract others
D. a light atmosphere in which both sides feel at ease

The head is thought to be the most important part of the human body, so a leader is often compared to a head. Thus we have Head of State or the head of a delegation(代表团). The head is where the brain is located. It is naturally connected with ideas and intelligence. Very often, we need other people’s ideas and opinions when we want to do something well. That’s because two heads are better than one.
The eyes are extremely precious to us. That is why we say “Mind your eye!” when we are reminding someone to be careful. Not only human beings and animals have eyes, many things also have “eyes” — the eye of a ship, the eye of a needle, the eye of a typhoon, and so on.
The ear is the organ of hearing. A piece of light music is easy on the ear. We are usually all ears for a bit of news. When they think somebody is overhearing, English people use either of the two proverbs: “Walls have ears.” and “Pitchers (水壶) have ears.” They also think that little pitchers have big ears. Nice boys and girls respect other people. They will not secretly listen to others’ private conversations.
The English phrase “face to face” and its Chinese counterpart(对应语) are exactly the same. But English people, to express the same idea, can say “nose to nose” instead. The word “nose” appears in many idioms. Here are two which are quite similar to their Chinese equivalents: “Lead somebody by the nose.” and “Turn up one’s nose at somebody or something.” English people can say “as plain as the nose in one’s face” to mean “very obvious”. Maybe to them, the nose is the most conspicuous part of the face.
44. The underlined word in the last sentence of the passage probably means “_____”.
A. important B. sensitive C. obvious D. precious
45. Why do you think a leader is often compared to a head
A. Because the head is the most obvious part of the body.
B. Because people think the head is the most important part of the human body.
C. Because the head means ideas and opinions.
D. Because the head is where the brain is located.
46. Which of the following doesn’t have the similar meaning to their Chinese equivalent
A. Face to face. B. Lead somebody by the nose.
C. Turn up one’s nose at somebody or something. D. As plain as the nose in one’s face.
47. Which of the following idioms has the correct explanation
A. Be all ears. → 悦耳动听。 B. Mind your eye!→ 当心!
C. Turn up one’s nose at somebody or something. → 牵着某人的鼻子走。
D. Two heads are better than one. → 一清二楚。

How to perform first aid The most important rule is not to panic. STOP (Stop, Think, Observe and Plan) is a helpful acronym (首字母缩略词) that can be easily used to start first aid. It is important that the first aid provider calmly takes in what he or she sees and forms a plan based on the available information. Most importantly, the first aid provider must check for possible dangers so as not to increase the number of victims.
The American Red Cross suggests “Check, Call, Care” as the sequence of events. First, the scene must be checked for safety, and then the victim must be checked for signs and symptoms. Next, professionals must be called to help, and then first aid is given as much as it is practical.
If the patient is conscious, it is important to ask for permission before proceeding. Since the victim will likely be frightened, explaining your actions and talking in a calm, reassuring voice will have a beneficial effect in reducing stress and increasing the probability of survival.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a manual method used to induce artificial breathing and heartbeat in a victim who has suffered cardiac (心脏病的) arrest. CPR may spontaneously (自然地) restore natural breathing and heartbeat.
If a person has stopped breathing but still has a pulse, it is possible for someone else to breathe for them. In rescue breathing, the rescuer alternates breaths taken for his own benefit with breaths into and out of the victim’s mouth.
If the victim is choking on a foreign object lodged in the windpipe (气管), the object must be removed. If the windpipe is cleared and breathing is not restored, rescue breathing should be applied.
The key element in treating severe bleeding is the application of firm, direct pressure to the wound, using a surgical glove or other infection barrier if available. The wound may be elevated above the heart to reduce blood pressure, though this should not be done if there is a risk of disturbing fractures (骨折). Pressure may also be applied to pressure points where blood vessels run close to the surface upstream(在上游) from the wound.
48. How many specific steps of first aid are involved in the passage
A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 6
49. Among the four aspects of “STOP”, which is the most important
A. Stop. B. Think. C. Observe. D. Plan.
50. When is artificial respiration(呼吸) needed
A. The victim has suffered cardiac arrest.
B. The person has stopped breathing but still has a pulse.
C. The victim is choking on a foreign object lodged in the windpipe.
D. The person is suffering severe bleeding.
51. When can’t the wound be elevated above the heart to reduce blood pressure
A. The victim’s bone is broken. B. The bleeding is very severe.
C. There is no surgical glove or other infection barrier available.
D. The blood vessels run close to the surface upstream from the wound.
