What did Isaac Newton do?
Isaac Newton was born in England in 1642 where he grew up on a farm. When he was a boy, he was very quiet. He was always thinking about things. He made lots of brilliant inventions, like a windmill to grind corn, a water clock and a sundial. However, Newton did not have brilliant marks at primary school.
When he was 18, Newton studied at Cambridge University. He was very interested in physics, mathematics and astronomy. But in 1665, the Great Plague, a terrible disease, spread across England and Cambridge University had to close down. Newton returned home to the farm. Newton continued studying and experimenting at home.
One day, he was reading a book under an apple tree. He saw an apple fall from the tree. “ Why do apples fall down instead of up?” he asked. From this, he discovered the theory of gravity (万有引力定律). Gravity explains why an object falls.

Newton passed away in 1727. He was a great physicist. His ideas changed the way other scientists thought. Many of Newton’s ideas are still true today. His thoughts were so original and so important. He was voted Man of the Millennium, the most important person in the past 1,000 years!
He was a scientist.
