一:原文重现
Peter, a 5-year_-old_b_oy, showed such great interest in sea shells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister, Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shinning on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling (闪烁) in the sky. As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming (绽放)in gentle wind.【版权所有:21教育】
One day, _Peter__was wandering through market with Shirley, with some shells in his pocket. Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging (落后) behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and was staring at something with great interest.

During the Grea_t_Depr_ession in the 1930s, my grandparents Milas and Mary Dunaway lived well on their small farm always busy with gardening, beekeeping or one of their many other projects. They also owned a tiny country store. Almost every day, you could find my brothers, my cousins and me hanging around our grandparents place, eyeballing Grandmother抯 teacakes and other goodies. Grandpa, on the other hand, was the person we would try to move quickly to avoid, because he always had dozens of things just waiting for us.21·世纪*教育网
One fine _spring_ day, when Cousin Mary and I had just planned a full day of playing around when Grandpa saw us. “Come on,” he said. “I need you to help plant soybeans(大豆) .” We were a little afraid of him, so we had to follow along. The field, which wasn’t really very big, looked like a hundred acres to Mary and me.2-1-c-n-j-y
Grandpa showed u_s_how__he wanted the soybeans dropped into the furrow(犁沟) he made in each row. This was fun for a few minutes, but we quickly got tired of dropping soybean after soybean, evenly spaced, into the soil. The job seemed endless. When we began dropping the soybeans too thickly, he would correct us. Under the watchful eye of Grandpa, we planted carefully behind him, soybean after soybean, slowly down the rows.21*cnjy*com
But as he began _to_tru_st us to do it right, Grandpa worked his way a good distance ahead of us. Suddenly, as we looked toward him, Mary and I noticed a hollow stump(空心的树桩) up ahead that had not been cleared from the field. That’s when a trick started. We looked at the soybeans, looked at the stump and looked at Grandpa. Walking slowly and heavily along, one tiny soybean at a time, we came near to the stump. Once we reached it we quickly put more than a gallon of soybeans into the stump and began covering the whole thing with dirt. Just then Grandpa turned and looked our way.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】

With his e_yes_fi_xed on Peter’s pocket, he wondered what Peter would do. Hesitantly taking out the treasured sea shells in his pockets, Peter asked in a low voice, “Sir, can these help cover the cost?” Watching the 5-year- old carefully lay down all his shining shells on the counter, the man was somewhat touched, but he just pretended to be counting the shells seriously, “Let me see, one, two…Ok. The shells are just enough. You can take the doll and save the money”. Hearing this, Peter felt truly amazed and thanked the shopkeeper, who actually wanted to thank the two little kids, especially when he saw a big smile quickly spread over the little girl’s innocent face. They said goodbye and left happily with the doll.
Seeing _Peter__leaving happily with his sister holding the doll tightly, an assistant in that shop got surprised. Since his boss had been in such a low mood recently that he seldom wore any smile and talked much. When the shopkeeper turned around and noticed the assistant’s surprised look, he said smilingly, “lovely kids, aren’t they? When I see the little boy is willing to take all he has to buy a doll for his lovely sister, it really warms my heart.” The assistant replied thoughtfully, “When he grows up, he will remember he purchased a doll for his sister with the shells from a shopkeeper, which will surely warm his heart, too.”
