Yu
Guangzhong
was
a
Chinese
poet
known
for
the
nostalgia(乡愁;怀旧之情)
that
he
described
in
his
poems.
But
now,
it
is
time
for
us
to
express
our
nostalgia
for
this
great
person.
On
14
December
2017,
the
famous
poet
passed
away
in
Taiwan.
Born
on
21
October
1928
in
Nanjing,
Jiangsu
Province,
Yu
and
his
family
spent
a
pleasant
time
in
their
home
town.
They
moved
to
Taiwan
in
1950.
Yu
lived
and
worked
there
for
the
rest
of
his
life.
In
“Nostalgia”,
Yu
expressed
his
homesickness
for
mainland
China
when
he
was
in
Taiwan.
Published
in
1971,
the
poem
remains
highly
popular
among
Chinese

literature

poem.
Now

poem

Yu
was
really
a
successful
poet,
but
his
achievements
were
far
more
than
that.
He
was
also
a
famous
essay(散文)
writer,
critic
and
translator.
He
once
translated
English
poet
Siegfried
Sassoon’s
poem
“In
Me,
Past,
Present,
Future
Meet”
into
Chinese.
It
is
considered
as
an
exact
and
powerful
translation,
in
which
the
most
famous
line
is
“心有猛虎,细嗅蔷薇”
for
“In
me
the
tiger
sniffs
the
rose”.
Yu
spent
his
whole
life
writing.
“The
reason
why
I
stick
to
writing
till
today
comes
down
to
my
strong
love
for
the
Chinese
language,”
he
once
said
in
a
2015
interview
with
People’s
Daily.
He
then
added
that
the
love
was
strengthened
by
his
love
for
his
mother
and
his
motherland.

There
were
many
plants
in
a
forest.
When
spring
came,
a
pine
tree
saw
a
red
rose
nearby
and
said,
“What
a
beautiful
flower!I
wish
I
were
that
lovely.”
The
rose
proudly
said,
“It
seems
that
I
am
the
most
beautiful
flower
in
this
forest.”
Then
the
rose
looked
at
a
cactus(仙人掌)
and
said,
“Look
at
that
ugly
plant
full
of
thorns!”
“What
a
proud
flower!”
thought
the
tree.
As
the
days
passed,
the
red
rose
often
looked
at
the
cactus
and
said
bad
words
about
it,
like
“This
plant
is
useless.
How
sorry
I
am
to
be
his
neighbour!”
The
cactus
never
got
angry
and
even
tried
to
advise
the
rose,
saying,
“God
did
not
create
any
form
of
life
without
a
purpose.”
Spring
passed,
and
the
weather
became
very
hot.
As
there
was
no
rain,
the
red
rose
began
to
wilt(枯萎).
One
day
the
rose
saw
some
birds
put
their
beaks(喙)
into
the
cactus
and
then
fly
away.
The
red
rose
asked
the
pine
what
the
birds
were
doing.
The
pine
tree
explained
that
the
birds
were
getting
water
from
the
cactus.
“The
cactus
has
water?”
asked
the
rose.
“Yes,
you
can
also
drink
some
from
it.
The
birds
can
bring
water
to
you
if
you
ask
the
cactus
for
help.”
The
red
rose
felt
too
ashamed
to
ask
for
water
from
the
cactus.
But
finally
it
did
ask
for
help.
The
cactus
kindly
agreed.
The
rose
learnt
a
lesson
and
never
judged(评价)
anyone
by
their
appearance
again.

I
think
I
should
read
more
books
besides
the
textbooks.
The
more,
the
better.
It
can
broaden(拓宽)
my
mind
and
improve
my
language
skills.
Of
course,
it
can
also
help
me
get
good
grades.
Do
you
know
how
to
read
more
and
learn
more?
Here
are
some
tips
for
you.
◆Make
your
purpose
in
reading
clear.
Before
you
start
reading,
ask
yourself
why
you
are
reading
this
book.
Most
people
read
for
two
main
reasons,
pleasure
or
knowledge.
Making
your
reading
purpose
clear
can
not
only
help
you
choose
the
books
you
really
need
to
read,
but
also
remind
you
why
reading
the
book
is
important
to
you,
so
you
will
keep
reading
and
complete
the
book
faster.
◆Read
only
what
you
are
interested
in.
No
matter
what
you
are
reading,
it’s
important
to
enjoy
what
you
read.
Your
friends
may
tell
you
the
books
they
love,
but
those
books
might
not
necessarily
be
the
ones
you
enjoy.
◆Give
up
books
that
you
don’t
enjoy.
You
may
have
chosen
books
that
you
are
interested
in,
and
they
are
right
for
your
purpose.
But
while
you
are
reading
them,
there
may
still
be
some
books
that
you
don’t
enjoy
reading.
Whenever
you
realise
that
you
aren’t
enjoying
the
book
you
are
reading,
give
it
up.
Remember
reading
shouldn’t
be
a
chore.

It
is
interesting
that
I
read
the
books
borrowed
from
libraries
faster
than
those
I

The
reason
is
that
the
books
I
bought
don’t
have
a
due
date.
I
don’t
need
to

Having
a
reading
goal
helps
you
work
out
how
much
reading
you
need
to
do
in
a

or
even
a

Before
you

Educated

one
of

the

The
writer
of
the
book,
Tara

is
an
American
living
in
the
UK.
She
shared
her
story
of
growing
up
in
the
book.

It

Her

Her

so
the

in
her

Tara
herself
had
never
been
to
school.
As
Tara
grew
up,
she
felt
that
she
had
to
leave
this
terrible
environment,
so
she
left
her
village
when
she
was
17.
However,
life
was
not
easy
for
her.
From
living
habits
to
social(社交的)
skills
and
schoolwork,
Tara
had
a
lot
to
learn
while
building
her
new
life.
But
she
made
it
in
the
end.
First
she
taught
herself
some
maths
and
grammar
to
enter
Brigham
Young
University.
Then
she
began
to
study
history
there.
At
last,
her
hard
work
ended
in
success.
She
got
a
doctor’s
degree
in
history
at

University.
Tara
tells

how
a

teenager
changed
her

on
her
own.
And
if
she
could,
why
can’t
you?

Reading
is
very
important
in
our
life.
We
can
get
knowledge
through
reading.
It

not
only
open
our
minds

us

Besides,
reading
is
also
one
of
the
most

ways
to
learn
a

English.
Textbooks,
newspapers,
magazines

other
kinds
of
reading
materials
can
help
us
know
more
about
the

and
help
us
grow
into
an
excellent
person.
I’m
planning
to
read
at

5
books
in
the

And
I’ll

reading
