“Oh boys, don’t throw stones at the poor bird,” said an old grey-headed man.
“Sir,” said a little fellow, “she makes such a loud noise that we can’t suffer from her.”
“Yes, but she uses the voice which nature gave her, and I am afraid the stone will rebound(弹回), and hurt you as long as you live!”
“Rebound! We don’t understand you, sir!”
“Well, come and I will tell you a story.”
“Is it a true story?”
“Yes, every word is true.”
“Fifty years ago, I was a boy like you. I used to throw stones very accurately.”?
“One day I went to work for an old couple. They were very kind to everybody and everything. Few had so many birds making their nests under the roofs of their houses. The birds seemed to love the couple. For seven years a bird had come, after the long winter was over, and built her nest in the same place, and raised her young chicks there. She and her mate had just returned when I went there to work, and the couple welcomed them heartily.”
“During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. She sat on a pole and looked at me trustfully. I found a nice stone, and I threw it with my utmost skill. It struck the bird on the head and she dropped dead!”
“I said nothing to the old couple about it. But one of their grandchildren told them what I had done. I could never look at them in the face afterwards. Oh, that I should have told them how sorry I was!”
“They have been dead many years, and so has the poor bird; but don’t you see how that stone rebounded, and hit me? How much the memory of it has hurt me! My dear boys, I would pay a great deal today if I could undo what I did!
“For fifty years I have remembered it. I have never spoken of it before, but if what my words will prevent you from throwing a stone that may rebound, I will be happy.”
The boys at once dropped the stones they had in their hands, and the bird had no more trouble from them.
1.Why did the boy throw stones at the bird?
A.Because she was too noisy to the boy.
B. Because she had a voice nature gave her.

D. Because the boy wanted the old man to tell him a story.

For some people, there’s no better companion than man’s best friend – a dog. This four-legged canine can bring comfort and joy and provide much-needed exercise for you when it needs walkies! This probably explains why dog ownership increased last year because people spent more time at home during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.
It was demand for puppies in particular that saw the biggest increase. Who couldn’t resist their playful personalities, adorable eyes, and super-soft coats?
However, as demand for a new pooch increased, so did the price tag. Popular breeds, such as Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels, saw even sharper price increases, and puppies have been selling for ?3,000 or more.
Animal welfare charities fear that high prices could encourage puppy farming, smuggling(贩卖) or dog theft. And a BBC investigation found some breeders have been selling puppies(幼犬) and kittens on social media sites – something charities have called “extremely irresponsible”.
But despite some new owners purchasing a dog legally, maybe from a rescue centre or registered breeder, they’ve proved to be ill-prepared for life with a new pet, and the pet itself has found it hard to come to terms with life in a new home. Animal behaviourists in the UK have reported a surge in requests to help dogs suffering from fear-aggression(害怕攻击) after their lives have been turned upside down.
Looking to the future, there are concerns about the welfare(幸福安康) of these much-loved pets. Ian Atkin, manager of the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary in the UK, told the BBC: “At the moment, the dogs are having a great time, but separation anxiety could still surface when people go back to work.” And Claire Calder from the UK’s Dogs Trust rescue charity says “the economic situation also means that some people may find they can’t afford to look after a dog.” The message is not to buy a puppy in haste and to pick one that fits into your lifestyle.
1.Why did dog ownership increase during the coronavirus pandemic?
A.Because people were looking for companionship and exercise.
B.Because dogs were also locked down together with people.
C.Because dogs became more playful, lovely and likeable.
D.Because the price of dogs increased at the same time.
2.What does the underlined phrase “come to terms with” most probably mean?
A. rescue B. regret C. access D. accept
3.How might going back to work affect the life of a dog?
A. Its price would be increased sharply B. It might be sold on social media
C. It can be smuggled and stolen D. It could suffer from separation anxiety
4.The author writes this article mainly to talk about_______________.
A. some concerns about the welfare of pet dogs.
B. some bad behaviors people do to pet dogs.
C. why people should raise a pet dog at home.
D. why dogs are becoming more and more expensive

This new Forever stamp from the U.S. Postal Service honors Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu(1912-1997), one of the most influential nuclear physicists of the 20th century.
The stamp art features a detailed portrait of Wu, wearing a black-and-white traditional Chinese dress known as qipao. The background was painted with an ancient, highly valued color historically used in artistic depictions of angels and nobleness.
During a career of more than 40 years in a field dominated(主宰) by men, Wu proved herself as the expert on marking research to test fundamental(基础的) theories of physics.
In 1944, Wu accepted a position under the Division of War Research at Columbia University working for the Manhattan project. Carrying out highly secret research for the production of the world's first atomic bomb, Wu made invaluable contributions to the experimental process of using the uranium atom(铀原子).
After the war ended, Wu stayed on at Columbia as a research professor, focusing her experimentation on beta decay(β衰变). With imagination and careful research, she created a more precise spectrometer(分光器) to finally explain the problem of beta decay, one that had troubled physicists in America and across Europe for many years.
In 1956, theoretical physicists Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang approached Wu for help in developing a theory that challenged the foundational law of conservation of parity(宇称守恒定律). Wu created a thoughtful and difficult experiment to test the theory. She observed that, in weak interactions(弱相互作用), parity is not conserved-a finding that helped the two lead physicists earn the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp with original art by Kam Mak.
The Chien-Shiung Wu stamp is being issued(发行) as a Forever stamp. This Forever stamp will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.
1. What do we know about Chien-Shiung Wu from this article?
A. She liked wearing Chinese clothes.
B. She worked for the first atomic bomb.
C. She won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
D. She was the best female scientist in physics.
2. How can we describe Chien-Shiung Wu's research?
A. Focused B. Independent. C. Rough D. Part-time
3. Why does the new stamp honor Dr Chien-Shiung Wu?
A. She was a Chinese American.
B. She always helped other physicists.
C. She was a female scientist in the man-dominated field.
D. She contributed much to many theories of physics.
4. What is the purpose of this article?
A. To praise a scientist. B. To introduce a new stamp.
C. To talk about a science research. D. To discuss the art of stamps.

English Festival goes off with a bang!
By Li Hua
28 April
Our annual school English Festival finished on Friday and once again it was amazingly instructive.
To enable students to master English by using it, this year's theme was “English for Use”. Every lass decorated their classroom with English. On Monday, we attended a lecture entitled “Authentic English”. In Thursday’s English Evening, students acted out different short plays. Friday afternoon’s oral competition was themed on English in real life.
The festival attracted and inspired us a lot. Many say they have finally understood the best way of English learning.
