I fell in love with the little Free Library concept years ago on vacation,The concept of free literature-sharing boxes being posted in neighborhoods and public spaces hooked me. For a booklover, this represented great joy.,At home,my bedside table sprouts(长出)books and from the floor rises a mountainous to-be-rend pile,My husband wasn't the least bit surprised when I suggested starting our own Little Free Library.
The following winter, my husband built a copy of our Irish garden shed(棚屋)with a framed glass door on the front and, in the spring, fixed it on a post in front of our house. We filled the shelves with books and since then, visitors have refilled them with literary fiction, romances, mysteries, science fiction, cowboy westerns, young-adult fiction, poetry, self-help and a range of other nonfiction.
For a time after COVID-19 first-struck, public libraries shut down and Amazon firstly considered the delivery of essential and high demand items. Books were less easily gained. Traffic to our library increased. I posted reminders about hand washing, and still, readers kept coming.
We wondered if we should close the Little Free Library and revisited our original motivations for hosting it: to promote the exchange of books, to create a sense of community. Reading provides the necessary relief to the emotional stress of life. With this in mind, we added a written reminder on staying safe in the library.
Through my teens, reading transported me to other places and eras. Books taught me about life and how people overcame difficulties. I no longer felt alone in the things I struggled against.
Aside from the entertainment books offer, studies show that reading exposes us to other cultures and perspectives. Literature sheds light on the justice to be found in social inclusion (包容) and community focus. Self-esteem (自尊) and understanding grow in equal measure as we come to understand ourselves and our place in the world.
During this pandemic, the Little Free Library has strengthened the importance of literature and reading to our emotional and mental health. It's become an alternative means of creating a community of people with mutual regard for humanity and the written word. We are together even when apart.
24. What is the husband's attitude toward building the Little Free Library
A.Supportive. B.Negative.
C.Indifferent. D.Doubtful.
25. What happened to the author's Little Free Library during the pandemic
A. It was no longer allowed to be used.
B. The number of books dropped sharply.
C. It was getting more popular than before.
D.Hand washing stopped readers coming.
26.How did reading influence the writer
A.She faced difficulties bravely. B.She knew how to start a library.
C.She managed to live a healthy life. D. She moved from one place to another.
27. Why did the writer start the Little Free Library
A.To keep away from loneliness. B. To create a sense of community.
C.To stay safe during the pandemic. D. To attract readers to donate books.

Robots are often cast in popular science fiction as the bad characters that take over the world and enslave mankind. But with the beginning of some serious diseases, robots are increasingly being employed as helpers, taking on often dull, difficult and dangerous tasks and thus reducing humans’ exposure to some terrifying virus.
In the United States, two of the main ways in which robotic technology is being used in the hospitals are to disinfect(消毒)hospital rooms and act as a telemedicine portal, allowing doctors and health care workers to communicate via video conference directly with patients without unnecessarily exposing themselves to those highly infectious virus.
In Boston, doctors, researchers and robotics engineers have teamed up to bring a friendly, dog-like, four-legged robot named Spot into Brigham and Women’ s Hospital, allowing doctors to communicate with patients via telemedicine.
In March, at the start of the pandemic, a league from hospital, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Spot’s manufacturer—Boston Dynamnics, began testing the robot’s design to enable Spot to communicate with patients, thus reducing the exposure of frontline health care workers to the virus. In the place of a head, Spot has an iPad affixed to a stand, allowing doctors to conduct telemedicine services with their patients.
“Most people actually really like it,” says Dr. Peter Chai, an emergency medicine physician who serves as the hospital's chief researcher on the robot project.
Researchers are working to increase the robot's diagnostic abilities, enabling it to measure the patients temperature and his or her respiratory rate(呼吸率).
Chai predicts that hospitals will continue to find more ways to use robots, and he wonders whether robots can deliver supplies to rooms or see patients with other infectious diseases.
28. What words can best describe the jobs robots are employed to do
A. Normal and easy. B. Exciting and dangerous.
C. Dirty and complex. D. Frightening and difficult.
29. Why are robots being used in American hospitals
A. To save money. B. To replace doctors.

30. What do we know about Spot
A. It is a friendly dog.
B. It can deliver supplies to hospital rooms.
C. It can help adjust the patient's temperature.
D. It allows doctors to conduct telemedicine services.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Spot the Robot Dog.
B. Train Robot Doctors.
C. Robots Being Used in Hospital.
D. Robots in Popular Science Fiction.

Ever since humanity began to farm our own food, we've faced the unpredictable rain that is both friend and enemy. It comes and goes without much warning, and a field of leafy greens one year can dry up and blow away the next. Food security and fortunes depend on sufficient rain, and nowhere more so than in Africa, where 96% of farmland depends on rain instead of the irrigation common in more-developed places. It has consequences: South Africa's ongoing drought — the worst in three decades — will cost it at least a quarter of its corn harvest this year.
Biologist Jill Farrant of the University of Cap Town in South Africa says that nature has plenty of answers for people who want to grow crops in places with unpredictable rainfall. She is hard at work finding a way to take qualities from rare wild plants that are adapted to extreme dry weather and use them in food crops." The type of farming I am aiming for is literally so that people can survive as it's going to get drier and drier," Farrant says.
Extreme conditions produce extremely tough plants and a few fierce plants are highly adaptable to the everchanging conditions. Farrant calls one of them resurrection plants (复苏植物). During months without water under a harsh sun, they fade and contract until they look like a pile of dead green leaves but rainfall can revive them in the matter of hours. That is to say, when they detect and extend dry period, they produce sugars and certain stress-associated proteins and other materials in their tissues to enter a glass-like state that is “the most stable state that a plant can maintain”.
Last year, after Chinese team published a draft genome (基因组)of rock violet, one of the best studied resurrection plants, Farrant and colleagues published a detailed study of another candidate. One or both of these models will help researchers test their ideas-so far mostly done in the lab-on test plots.
32. Which can be responsible for the reduction in corn crop in South Africa
A. Facing unpredictable rain.
B. Lacking advanced irrigation.
C. The food security.
D. The ongoing drought.
33. Why does Jill Farrar conduct the relevant study
A. To maintain the most stable state of tough plants.
B. To grow crops in places with unpredictable rainfall.
C. To apply the special quality of wild plants to human farming.
D. To survive extreme dry weather and ever-changing conditions.
34. What does the underlined word “contract” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. shrink B. die C. withdraw D. rest
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The research is still on trial.
B Chinese team worked harder.
C. One of the candidates has been put into use.
D. The results contribute to resurrection plants.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Communication roadblocks are very common. They occur when two people talk in such a way that neither one feels understood.1.However, there are several ways to help individuals overcome roadblocks.
Soften the startup. One of the skills to overcome communication roadblocks is to begin a conversation by starting with something positive, expressing appreciation and taking responsibility for thoughts and feelings.2.For example, ''I want to stay more involved in making decisions about money'' rather than ''You never include me in financial decisions. ''
Make and receive repair attempts. Another important skill in overcoming communication roadblocks is learning to make and receive repair attempts. They are efforts to prevent an increasingly negative interaction from going any further.3.This is important because when conflicts appear, we often experience stress that can affect our ability to think and reason, which can lead to communication roadblocks. Taking time away from the conflict to calm down can help us be more prepared to discuss the issue.
4.Overcoming communication roadblocks requires each partner to take turns being the speaker and the listener so that each has a chance to express themselves effectively. The goal is not to solve a particular problem, but rather to have a safe and meaningful discussion and to understand each other's point of view, which may lead to more effective communication.
Dealing with communication roadblocks can take large amounts of mental, emotional, and physical energy. But learning and using a few simple skills can increase positive communication with others.5.
A.Use effective speaking and listening skills.
B.Deal with roadblocks in communicating with partners.
C.Sometimes we can take a break or make efforts to calm the situation.
D.They are not good for effective communication and often deepen the conflicts.
E. The opportunities for personal and relationship growth are well worth the effort.
F. In addition, starting the message in the first person can promote positive communication.
G. Recognizing roadblocks and trying to communicate effectively help positive interactions.

Thomas watched the irrigation canal (灌溉渠) for a sign of water. It looked as dry as he felt inside. Thomas’s thoughts were interrupted as his younger sister, Maggie, came skipping across the field.
“What are you giving Mama for her birthday ” she asked.
Thomas felt his stomach turn. He had forgotten that Mama’s birthday, the first since they left their hometown, was tomorrow. “It’s a surprise, Maggie,” he answered. It was the truth. Even he would be surprised.
Thomas would wish to be back in the mountains of their hometown. Surely Mama would want the same. At least it rained there. Each time it did, Mama, Thomas, and Maggie would sit on the front porch and watch for a rainbow. Then each of them picked out a favorite color in the rainbow. Mama always gave the same answer. “Turquoise (蓝绿色,绿松石),” she would finally say with a dreamy smile, pointing at the sky. “Squeezed in tight, between the blue and green. Close your eyes and you can see it. If you could touch it, it would feel cool, like a breeze blowing across the stream.”
Thomas was discouraged. The sun would be setting soon, and he still had nothing to give his mother. What he saw around were rocks and sand. He picked up a large, flat rock, scooped up the dirt and watched it fall to the ground. Suddenly, something caught his eye. A speck of color peeked through the dirt.
“Hey, what’s this ” he asked.
“Let’s find out,” Maggie yelled. Thomas and Maggie dug with their fingers and uncovered a small, round stone. In the center, there was a tiny hole.
“That’s just a turquoise bead (珠子),” Thomas exclaimed. “My friend Jack’s sister has a jar full of them.”
“Let’s see if there are more,” Maggie got excited.

C. To protect doctors from infecting virus. D. To deliver supplies to patients and doctors.

作文一:
Dear John,
I’m so pleased to hear that you’ve been in Senior High School. And maybe you need a couple of months to adjust yourself. Here are some good tips for you.
Firstly, a life without a friend is a life without a sun, so why not make a lot of good friends and enjoy helping each other. Secondly, we can take an active part in sports in our spare time so that we can get into shape, which will surely be good for our further study. Besides, it’s our duty to study hard to make sure that one day our dream of entering a key university will come true.
I believe you’ll get used to it soon and wait for your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
作文二:
“I have an idea,” Thomas said excitedly. They kept digging and found more beads. A while later, Thomas counted twenty-three beads. He put them in his shirt, holding up the front so he wouldn’t drop them. Then he carried them to the river, and Maggie helped him wash each one. Carefully, they dried and polished them with a handkerchief. “Mama will have a birthday present after all!” Thomas exclaimed. He seemed to see a necklace sparkling around his Mama’s neck and his Mama stroked it fondly.
Early the next morning, Thomas and Maggie set a small package on the table. “What’s this ” Mama was curious. As she unwrapped the small package, she gasped. “What a beautiful necklace!” she cried, pulling Thomas and Maggie close. “I can almost feel a cool breeze blowing across the stream.” Mama closed her eyes and smiled. “It smells like rain and I can see that turquoise in the most beautiful rainbow. Thank you, my dearest children.” Thomas felt good inside. Mama had her favourite turquoise!2021届衡钢中学高三期末分班考试
