(Text2)
M: With this new job, I’ve got to start dressing more professionally.
W: Maybe you need a suit.
M: Yes, I think so. What about this one?
W: Well, the style is fine. You might want to reconsider the choice of color.
(Text3)
W: What do you think of it?
M: I particularly enjoyed the description of the scenery.. The characters were quite well developed.
W: Well, I think it was perhaps a bit long. I was a bit relieved when I finally finished it.
M: Oh, I feel that way, too.
(Text4)
W: I’m sorry I am late.
M: What’s wrong with you? I left a message with your roommate about the time change.
W: She has a very short memory and it really gets on my nerves sometimes.
M: Oh, I see.
(Text5)
W: Do you have any idea what this notice about?
M: I’m as in the dark as you are.
(Text6)
M: Hi, up with you. It’s important to do some exercises. You mustn’t be too lazy.
W. Oh. Daddy! Mum doesn’t do any exercises, either. I’m not the sporty type. I’m too fat to do sport.
M: The doctor told her she had to rest because of the problem she has with her heart.
W: But what about Peter?
M: He’s too busy. After all, he has to support this four-people family. He has to work very long hours and he couldn’t finish earlier. It’s impossible for him to do some exercises.
W: I know, you and mummy prefer boys to girls.
M: Come on, darling. Won’t you become a nice girl.
(Text7)
M: Hi, Barbara! Did you have a nice break?
W: Hi! I sure did. I’m glad to be back…one more term to go.
M: Yeah. How’s your course?
M; Why?
W: I’d love to learn French, but I don’t want to ruin my grade point average.. If I don’t do well, how will it look on my record? Do you think I should drop the course?
M: That’s a tough decision. But, look. Just be sure to get a lot of practice. You know, I have a friend who’s French-speaking. Do you want her number? Maybe you could get together.
W: Do you think she minds?
M: I bet she’d love to talk to you in French.
W: That might be fun.
(Text8)
W: Can you tell me what is so special about your department store?
M: Well, yes, it is special. Reynold’s is a large department sore and you can find everything you want for the home here.
W: Yes, that’s right, but isn’t there something special about the staff—you know—has anybody retired recently?
M: No. Nobody has retired recently, and we never force anybody to retire here.
W: How old is your employee?
M: Well, that would be Arthur. Arthur is our cleaner, and he’s 87.
W: 87! And he cleans the store every day?
M: Well, not alone, no. He works with two other cleaners. They’re not so old—Mabel’s 70 and Ivy’s 75—76. That’s right, she just had her birthday.
W: And they don’t want to retire?
M: No. I think they enjoy the work, and it keeps them young.
(Text10)
M: The religion of the ancient Egyptians was based on nature. The sun, the wind and the animals which the Egyptians used on their land were all important in Egyptian religion. The chief god was Ra who represented the sun. But the Egyptians had many other gods, some of whom had the heads of animals. Bast was the soul of a man could live on if the body was preserved in a special way.
The word “mummy” comes from an ancient Egyptian word meaning “tar”, and tar was one of the things which the ancient Egyptian used to preserve the body after death. The bodies were then wrapped in cloth, and dressed with jewels and necklaces. A mask was placed over the face of the dead person. And for the very important people, the mask was made of gold. The body of the dead person was buried together with things that the person had used during his life on earth, and things which he would need in the next life. Some of the tombs in which the bodies were kept were huge and beautiful structures. They were full of rare and expensive treasures.
