Niki
saw
the
sign
first.
It
said
“Welcome
to
Layton.”
“Here
we
are!”
Niki
said.
“Yes,”
answered
Mum.
“Now
I’ll
show
you
where
I
grew
up.”
Mum
turned
right.
“This
is
Hill
Street.
Let’s
find
my
old
house.”
She
stopped
the
car
in
front
of
a
red
house.
“Oh,
my
dear!
It’s
so
different
now,”
Mum
said
sadly.
“Let’s
see
how
Main
Street
looks.”
As
the
car
moved
up
Main
Street,
Niki
asked,
“Is

it?”

The
story
of
Dr
Percy
Julian
is
a
good
example
of
one
person’s
hard
work
and
bravery(勇敢).
Percy
was
born
in
Alabama
in
1899.
Because
he
was
African
American,
he
couldn’t

children.
The

science.
And

he

greatly
interested
in
the
science
of
chemistry(化学).
After
college,
Percy
wanted
to
go
to
graduate
school
so
he
could
become
a
chemist.
But
one
school
after
another
turned
him
down

his
skin
colour.
Finally,
Harvard
University
accepted(接受)
him.

Dr

with
chemicals(化学物质)

in
plants.
He
knew
that
some
plants
had
chemicals
that
could
help
people.
So
he
created
those
same
chemicals
in
a
lab.
That
meant
more
people
could
get
the
medicines
they
need.
He
developed
chemicals
that
helped
people
with
eye
diseases
and
eased
the
pain
that
some
people
had
in
their
bones.
Dr
Julian
also
used
chemicals
to
invent
many
new
products.
After
working
at
a
company
in
Chicago
for
many
years,
Dr
Julian
opened
his
own
lab.
Then
he
started
a
school
that
teached
young
people
to
be
chemists.
Dr
Percy
Julian
died
in
1975.
Today,
his
discoveries(发现)
still
help
millions
of
people.

We
arrived
in
the
clean,
lovely
city
of
Yangzhou

our

In
order
to
be
a
great
engineer,
I
will
study
maths
and
science
harder
from
now
on.
The
more
I
learn
now,
the
better
work
I’ll
be
able
to
do
in
the
future.
If
I
become
rich
one
day,
I’ll
build
libraries
for
teenagers
in
poor
areas
because
I
think
books
are
our
best
friends,
and
I
want
the
teenagers
to
learn
more
knowledge
from
them.
I
really
hope
my
dream
will
come
true.
