He was in the first third grade class I taught at Saint Mary's School in Moms, Minnesota. All of my students were 36 to me, but Mark was one in a million.Very neat in 37 , he had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made 38 his occasional mischievousness (恶作剧) delightful.
Mark talked constantly.I had to 39 him again and again that talking without permission was not 40 . What impressed me so much, though, was his sincere response 41 I had to correct him for misbehaving."Thank you for correcting me.Sister!" I didn't know what to make of it at first, but 42 I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.
One morning my 43 was growing thin when Mark talked once too often, and then I made a beginner teacher's 44 . I looked at Mark and said, "If you say 45 more word, I am going to tape your mouth 46 ! " It wasn't ten seconds later before Chuck blurted( 脱口说出)out, “Mark is talking again.” I hadn't 47 any of the students to help me 48 Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to 49 on it. I remember the scene 50 it had occurred this morning.I walked to my desk, very purposely opened my 51 and took out a roll of tape.Without saying a word, I headed to Mark's desk, 52 off two pieces of tape and made a big X with them 53 his mouth.I then returned to the front of the room.As I glanced at Mark to see how he was doing, he winked(眨眼) at me.That did it! I started 54 . The class cheered as I walked back to Mark's desk, 55 the tape, and shrugged (耸肩)my shoulders. His first words were, "Thank you for correcting me, Sister".

Greenspace facilities (设施) are contributing to an important degree to the quality of the city environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-proved statement than on the base of a closely reasoned scientific proof. Recognizing the importance of greenspaces in the city environment is a first step on the right way, this does not mean, however, that enough details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which people are using these spaces. As to this subject I shall within the scope (范围) of this lecture, enter into one aspect only, namely the recreative function of greenspace facilities.
The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town and country planning, has in my opinion resulted in more attention for forms of recreation far from home, while there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door of the house. The city environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more required activities can also have recreative aspect.
The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street door of your house is closed after you.
1. The importance of greenspaces in the city environment _____.
A. is still unknown B. is paid little attention to
C. is accepted on the base of scientific proof D. has been recognized
2. For many years town and country planning has _____.
A. brought living areas and places of entertainment close together
B. separated recreation facilities far from home
C. improved recreative possibilities in the neighborhood
D. enabled people to reach the best standard of living
3. What does the writer recommend to create a better environment
A. Providing a recreation place. B. Creating more separated greenspace
C. Owning greenspace facilities. D. Delivering a free service.
4. According to the author, greenspaces should be designed _____.
A. to reduce the number of recreative activities
B. to attract more and more people
C. for people to use more conveniently
D. for people to do recreative activities at the street door of the house
5. The main idea of this passage is that _____.
A. attention must be paid to the improvement of recreation
B. greenspace facilities should be used better to improve the quality of life
C. the city environment is providing more recreative activities
D. we should try our best to raise our living standard

Cyberspace(网络空间), the connections between computers in different places, considered as a real place where information, messages and pictures exist, mirrors the real world in many ways. People ask for information, play games, and share hobbies. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.
Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen.Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace.Rather, a person’s thoughts----or at least the thoughts they type-----are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat room star.
Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems.Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation.Where else can so many people come together to chat But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed.Others fail miserably.
Supporters of online relationships state that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first.Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way.But critics(批评者) of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them.Internet users can carefully craft(精心制作) their words to fit whatever image they want to give. And they don’t have to worry about what their “nonverbal(不用语言的)” communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.
All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination “fill in the blanks.” This unavoidably leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite more different than the real person. So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”
1.According to the passage, chatting in the cyberspace .
A.stresses more about people’s identity
B.needs people to be rich in knowledge
C.puts emphasis on people’s thoughts
D.allows people to discuss politics secretly
2.People who are against online dating think .
A.what is said online is under control of the Internet
B.one may not show the real self in cyberspace
C.the faceless communication is conservative
D.it is hard to protect the other’s identity
3.By saying “With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination ‘fill in the blanks’”, the writer means that .
A.people may be disappointed when they meet in person
B.the Internet makes it easy for people to imagine how others view them
C.the Internet allows people to get more information about their loved ones
D.people usually get to know each other by chance through the Internet
4.We can infer from the last paragraph that Clifford .
A.demands to develop the computer system
B.believes it hopeless to find love online
C.encourages people to enjoy modern life
D.supports to look for love in the real life

Honesty, my mum always used to tell me, is the best policy. Of course, this didn't include her when she told me that if I didn’t eat all my vegetables Father Christmas would find out and wouldn't give me any presents.
But when it comes to medicine, I had believed it was important to always be honest with my patients. After all, the doctor-patient relationship is based on trust, and therefore honesty is important, or so I thought.
I had just started working in geriatrics(老年病科). Mr. McMahon was brought in when his baby was found very swollen. I took a medical history from his daughter who had accompanied him in the ambulance. She'd been his main carer for years. I stood looking at him as she gave a detailed history. "Has he lost any weight recently " I asked, "Well, it's funny you should mention that, but yes. "She said slowly. There was silence for a few moments. "Why What are you worried about " she asked, I hesitated. She was obviously very involved in his care and it was only fair that I told her the truth. "Well, we need to prove it's not cancer. " I said and talked briefly about some of the tests I was going to order.
Half an hour later, a nurse called me: "Mr. McMahon's daughter broke down-she said you told her he had cancer. " My heart sank. By the time I arrived at the ward, my consultant was already there, explaining that we still had to run lots of tests and that it was by no means confirmed that he had cancer. I stood silently at the end of the bed. My consultant was obviously angry with me and as we left Mr. McMahon, she turned to me. "Why on earth did you do that " she asked in disbelief. I looked at her and bit my lip. "She asked me what I was worried about and I told her. " I said, hanging my head. "And give her more to worry about " replied my consultant. "You don't say the word 'cancer' until it's confirmed. Even if you suspect it, think very carefully before you tell people. "
As it turned out, it wasn't cancer. But I did learn that when someone is stressed and worried about their loved one they're sometimes selective in what they hear-and as a doctor it's important to be mindful of this. In being truthful, I'd made the situation worse.
1. The purpose of the first two paragraphs is to show that the author_________.
A.misunderstood the doctor-patient relationship
B.was anxious to receive Christmas gifts
C.regarded honesty as the best policy
D.had an unhealthy eating habit
2. The author's consultant was angry with him because _________.
A.he told the daughter what he suspected.
B.he delayed running the necessary tests.
C.he failed to confirm the parent's disease.
D.he forgot what the consultant had advised.
3. The author hung his head (the underlined part in Para. 4) because he was feeling_________.
A.guilty B.hurt C.disappointed D.helpless
4.What lesson has the author learnt from his experience
A.Learning from parents is necessary.
B.Jumping to a conclusion is dangerous.
C.Telling the truth may not always be the best solution.
D.Selecting pleasant words may not be the perfect policy.

Years ago, after a rough divorce, we were invited to live with my aunt who lived in a rural area. We packed up our belongings and moved across the country to settle into our new "home".
Once there I was worried about the lack of extended family(大家庭) and thought I would miss the convenience of having relatives nearby. My aunt explained to my children (and myself) that there are many different kinds of family and not all of them have two parents in the home. I didn't think too much of this speech, being rather shell-shocked after the divorce, but her words stuck with me.
It wasn't too long after we settled in that friends and neighbors began to come over to meet us and extend invitations for outings. Many single ladies lived in this particular small area and were very loving and affectionate with my school-aged children.
After they got to know the kids better we began to get calls: "Can I borrow your kids I want to go to the circus and want to take them!" "I am going fossil(化石) hunting with my geology group: would your son like to come along " "I am going hiking. Can I take your kids " "How would your kids like to learn how to drive a mule(骡子) " And, on and on it went like that.
Not only did my children benefit from the outings by learning new things, they learned manners, geology, ecology, respect for animals and too many good things to mention. Our neighbors enjoyed the contact with the young folks, too.
My daughter, now grown and with a child of her own, mentioned to me a few days ago how much she enjoyed the outings with our extended "family" while growing up. My son still recalls going fossil hunting years ago and still talks about it! We are still friends with all these neighbors although we are all older.
Now that my own kids are grown up I find myself looking around the neighborhood myself for families with young children. I might want to go looking for frogs and turtles by the creek(小河)... or maybe the circus ... and, I might just say: "Can I borrow your kids "

A. they benefited a lot from the outings
B. they enjoyed their stay with friendly neighbors
C. they learn many good things
D. they’re still friends with all these neighbors
5. Which do you think is the best title of the passage

Half of the world’s population is affected by Asian monsoons(季风), but monsoons are difficult to predict. American researchers have put together a 700-year record of the rainy seasons, which is expected to provide guidance for experts making weather predictions.
Every year, moist (潮湿的)air masses, known as monsoon, produce large amounts of rainfall in India, East Asia, Northern Australia and East Africa. All this wet air is pulled in by a high pressure area over the Indian Ocean and a low pressure area to the south.
According to Edward Cook , a weather expert at Columbia University in New York., the complex nature of the climate systems across Asia makes monsoons hard to predict. In addition, climate records for the area are too recent and not detailed enough to be of much use. Therefore, he and a team of researchers spent more than fifteen years traveling across Asia, looking for trees old enough to provide long-term records. They measured the rings, or circles, inside thousands of ancient trees in more than 300 places.
Rainfall has a direct link to the growth and width of rings on some kinds of trees. The researchers developed a document they are calling a Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas. It shows the effect of monsoons over seven centuries, beginning in the 1300s.
Professor Cook says the tree-ring records show periods of wet and dry weather. “If the monsoon basically fails or is a very weak one, the trees affected by monsoons at that location might put on a very narrow ring. But if the monsoon is very strong, the trees affected by that monsoon might put on a wide ring for that year. So, the wide and narrow ring widths of the chronology(年代表) that we developed in Asia provide us with a measure of monsoon variability.” With all this information, researchers say they can begin to improve computer climate models for predicting the behavior of monsoons.
“There has been widespread famine(饥荒)and starvation and human dying in the past in large droughts(干旱). And on the other hand, if the monsoon is particularly heavy, it can cause extensive flooding.” said Eugene Wahl, a scientist with America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “So, to get a sense of what the regional moisture patterns have been, dryness and wetness over such a long period of time in great detail, I would call it a kind of victory for climate science.”
1.What’sthe passage mainly about?
A. The effects of Asian monsoons. B. The necessity of weather forecast.
C. The achievements of Edward cook. D. A breakthrough in monsoon prediction.
2. It is difficult for experts to predict Asian monsoons because_________

B. The Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas has a monsoon record for about 1,300 years.
C. The trees affected by monsoon grow fast if the monsoon is weak.
D. The rainfall might be low although the monsoon is strong in monsoon-affected areas.

On March 28th, the New York Times will begin charging all but the most infrequent users to read articles online.
In a letter to readers, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., the publisher of the paper, laid out the details of the paywall, which he said will go into effect immediately in Canada and on March 28th for the rest of the world. He called the move "an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in the Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform."
Sulzberger said that readers will be able to read 20 articles per month at no charge.Once they click on the 21st piece, however, they'll be presented with three payment options(任选): $ 15 for four weeks of online and mobile application access, $ 20 for access to the site and the iPad application, or $ 35 for access to everything.People who already receive the printed paper through home delivery will enjoy free and unlimited access to the Times on all platforms.
These details largely agree with earlier reports on how the paywall would work. The Times had made it clear that it did not want to imitate(模仿) the total paywalls put into effect by papers such as The Times of London and Newsday, which block access to all contents unless the reader pays.
The paper also signaled that it wants to stay relevant(切题的) in the social media world.According to Sulzberger's announcement, people who come to the Times site from Facebook, Twitter or from blogs will be able to read those articles even if they have gone over their monthly limit.
However, Sulzberger said that a limit will be placed on "some search engines", meaning that after readers have accessed a certain number of articles from search engines, any further articles they access from there will be added to their monthly count. It was reported that the only search engine that will be affected this way is Google, where there will be a five-article limit. This marks a clear attempt by the Times to close what could be a giant loophole (漏洞), since so much online traffic is directed through Google. But it also presents a risk for the Times for the same reason.
Sulzberger seems well aware of the risk."The challenge now is to put a price on our work without walling ourselves off from the global network," he said, adding that the Times must "continue to engage with the widest possible audience."
