smiling
is
the

In
its
early
history,Chicago
had
floods
frequently,especially
in
the
spring,making
the
streets
so
muddy
that
people,horses,and
carts
got
stuck.An
old
joke
that
was
popular
at
the
time
went
something
like
this:A
man
is
stuck
up
to
his
waist
in
a
muddy
Chicago
street.Asked
if
he
needs
help,he
replies,“No,thanks.I’ve
got
a
good
horse
under
me.”
The
city
planner
decided
to
build
an
underground
drainage(排水)
system,but
there
simply
wasn’t
enough
difference
between
the
height
of
the
ground
level
and
the
water
level.The
only
two
options
were
to
lower
the
Chicago
River
or
raise
the
city.
An
engineer
named
Ellis
Chesbrough
convinced
the
city
that
it
had
no
choice
but
to
build
the
pipes
above
ground
and
then
cover
them
with
dirt.This
raised
the
level
of
the
city’s
streets
by
as
much
as
12
feet.
This
of
course
created
a
new
problem:dirt
practically
buried
the
first
floors
of
every
building
in
Chicago.Building
owners
were
faced
with
a
choice:either
change
the
first
floors
of
their
buildings
into
basements,and
the
second
stories
into
main
floors,or
hoist
the
entire
buildings
to
meet
the
new
street
level.Small
wood-frame
buildings
could
be
lifted
fairly
easily.But
what
about
large,heavy
structures
like
Tremont
Hotel,which
was
a
six-story
brick
building?
That’s
where
George
Pullman
came
in.He
had
developed
some
house-moving
skills
successfully.To
lift
a
big
structure
like
the
Tremont
Hotel,Pullman
would
place
thousands
of
jackscrews
(螺旋千斤顶)
beneath
the
building’s
foundation.One
man
was
assigned
to
operate
each
section
of
roughly
10
jackscrews.At
Pullman’s
signal
each
man
turned
his
jackscrew
the
same
amount
at
the
same
time,thereby
raising
the
building
slowly
and
evenly.Astonishingly,the
Tremont
Hotel
stay
open
during
the
entire
operation,and
many
of
its
guests
didn’t
even
notice
anything
was
happening.
Some
people
like
to
say
that
every
problem
has
a
solution.But
in
Chicago’s
early
history,every
engineering
solution
seemed
to
create
a
new
problem.Now
that
Chicago’s
waste
water
was
draining
efficiently
into
the
Chicago
River,the
city’s
next
step
was
to
clean
the
polluted
river.
28.The
author
mentions
the
joke
to
show
.
A.horses
were
fairly
useful
in
Chicago
B.the
Chicago
people
were
particularly
humorous
C.Chicago
was
very
dangerous
in
the
spring
D.Chicago’s
streets
were
extremely
muddy
29.The

An
international
group
of
coffee
experts
has
considered
Ethiopia’s
coffee
as
the
best
in
the
world.Coffee
is
a
top
export(出口物)
of
the
country.But
at
home,it
is
seen
as
national
pride.Ethiopians
feel
good
about
their
coffee,and
enjoying
a
drink
with
friends
is
a
long
tradition.
Some
people
say
the
climate
produces
quality
beans.Morton
Wennersgarrd
is
a
coffee
importer.He
said,“Ethiopia
has
different
ancient
types
of
coffee.They
are
planted
in
places
with
perfect
soil,perfect
altitude,and
climates
that
are
really
suitable
for
coffee
processing.”
Finding
the
best
quality
beans
is
often
an
issue
of
taste.The
process
is
known
as
cupping—tasting
and
comparing
coffee
from
different
roasted
beans,grading
and
then
pricing
them.But
before
international
experts
come
to
taste,coffee
beans
are
studied
in
small
coffee
laboratories.Helen
Assefa,a
lab
technician,describes
the
process,“When
the
coffee
comes
to
the
lab,we
assess(评价)
its
quality
first
by
recording
the
details.Then
we
weigh
the
moisture(水分)
level
and
we
examine
the
beans
for
analysis.After
that
we
grind(磨碎)
the
coffee
beans
and
taste
the
samples.In
the
end
we
check
for
defective(有瑕疵的)
beans.”
Mubarik
Abaoli
is
a
lab
worker.He
says
that
testing
is
a
very
difficult
and
long
process.“We
select
out
the
defects
by
hand.And
we
select
out
the
defect
according
to
the
defect
types.”
Ethiopia
has
got
a
lot
of
money
by
exporting
coffee
to
more
than
120
countries.The
country
has
an
export
revenue(税收)
of
more
than
$840
million
a
year.But
not
all
the
best
coffee
leaves
Ethiopia.Forty
percent
of
the
coffee
grown
in
the
country
stays
there.It
remains
an
important
part
of
everyday
life
at
work,at
home
and
at
ceremonies.
32.Ethiopians’
attitude
towards
coffee
may
best
be
described
as
.
A.proud
B.relaxed
C.brave
D.doubtful
33.The
third
paragraph
is
mainly
about
.
A.the
ways
of
making
coffee
B.the
process
of
assessing
the
coffee
C.the
tips
on
planting
the
best
coffee
D.the
influence
of
the
coffee
34.What
can
we
learn
from
the
last
paragraph?
A.More
than
120
countries
export
coffee
to
Ethiopia.
B.Coffee
plays
an
important
role
in
Ethiopians’
life.
C.40%
of
the
coffee
grown
in
Ethiopia
is
exported.
D.Ethiopians
earn
their
living
by
exporting
coffee.
35.What
is
the
main
purpose
of
the
passage?
A.To
advertise
the
coffee
in
Ethiopia.
B.To
comment
on
coffee
experts’
work.
C.To
introduce
the
best
coffee
in
the

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Gratitude
is
beneficial
to
both
the
one
giving
and
the
one
receiving.
36
It
can
be
as
simple
as
getting
up
in
the
morning
and
acknowledging
that
you
woke
up—not
everyone
has
that
benefit.
Instead
of
getting
mad
at
others,show
them
gratitude.Make
an
effort
to
communicate
more
effectively
instead
of
being
critical.When
you
are
having
a
hard
day
at
work,take
a
break
and
remember
some
of
the
good
days
that
you’ve
had
that
month.
37
Research
shows
that
individuals
who
express
gratitude
have
a
more
positive
outlook
on
life,better
health
and
less
stress;they
are
more
likely
to
forgive;and
they
have
stronger
relationships.
38
Having
a
gratitude
jar
reminds
us
of
the
feeling
we
felt
when
we
were
“in
the
moment”.It
allows
us
to
be
more
mindful
and
present.
To
make
a
gratitude
jar,find
a
decorative
vase
or
fish
bowl
and
start
recording
all
of
your
happy
memories
and
events
throughout
the
year.Keep
some
decorative
paper
close
so
that
you
can
jot(草草记下)
these
memories
down
and
place
them
in
the
jar.
39
And
you
can
remember
all
of
the
good
time
that
you
have
had
throughout
the
year.
40
Be
specific
when
you
reflect
back
on
your
memories
so
that
you
won’t
forget
any
important
details.If
possible,be
personal
and
include
names
when
writing
down
your
entries(条目).
A.You
shouldn’t
be
too
critical.
B.Don’t
forget
that
it
is
only
a
bad
day,not
a
bad
life.
C.Be
creative
when
writing
down
what
you
are
grateful
for.
D.There
are
many
reasons
for
which
to
express
your
gratitude.
E.Don’t
forget
life’s
surprises:unexpected
events,visitors,etc.
F.Instead
of
using
a
gratitude
journal,I
started
using
a
gratitude
jar.
G.When
you
are
having
a
bad
day,you
can
reach
into
your
gratitude
jar.

I
had
never
been
more
anxious
in
my
life.I
had
just
spent
the
last
three
endless
hours
trying
to
get
to
the
airport
so
that
I
could
travel
home.Now,as
I
watched
the
bus
driver
set
my
luggage
on
the
airport
sidewalk,I
realized
that
my
anxiety
had
only
just
begun.
This
was
my
first
visit
alone
to
the
international
terminal
of
the
airport,and
nothing
was
familiar.I
could
not
make
sense
of
any
of
the
signs.Where
was
the
check-in
counter?
Where
should
I
take
my
luggage?
I
had
no
idea
where
to
go,feeling
as
if
I
were
deaf
and
blind
and
stupid.I
began
to
panic.What
time
was
it?
Where
was
my
plane?
I
had
to
find
help
because
I
could
not
be
late!
I
tried
to
ask
a
passing
businessman
for
help,but
my
words
all
came
out
wrong.He
just
frowned
and
walked
away.What
had
happened?
I
had
been
in
this
country
for
a
whole
semester,and
I
could
not
even
remember
how
to
ask
for
directions.This
was
awful!
Another
bus
arrived
at
the
terminal,and
the
passengers
came
out
carrying
all
sorts
of
luggage.Here
was
my
chance!
I
could
follow
them
to
the
right
place,and
I
would
not
have
to
say
a
word.
I
dragged
my
enormous
suitcase
behind
me
and
followed
the
group.We
finally
reached
the
elevators.Oh,no!
They
all
fit
in
it,but
there
was
not
enough
room
for
me.I
watched
in
despair
as
the
elevator
doors
closed.I
was
abandoned
again!
I
had
no
idea
what
to
do
next.I
got
on
the
elevator
when
it
returned
and
stared
at
all
the
buttons.Which
one
could
it
be?
I
pressed
button
3,because
I
thought
I
saw
those
passengers
pressed
3,though
it
was
no
more
than
a
quick
glance.The
elevator
slowly
climbed
up
to
the
third
floor
and
came
to
a
stop.A
high,unpleasant
noise
announced
the
opening
of
the
doors,and
I
looked
around
shyly.

参考范文
Tears
formed
in
my
eyes
as
I
saw
the
empty
hall
and
realized
that
I
would
miss
my
plane.Just
then
an
elderly
airport
employee
walked
towards
me
from
the
corner.He
saw
that
I
was
lost
and
asked
if
he
could
help
in
any
way.He
gave
me
his
handkerchief
to
dry
my
tears
as
I
related
my
predicament.He
smiled
kindly,and
patted
my
shoulder
to
ease
my
anxiety,before
leading
me
down
a
long
hallway.We
walked
up
some
stairs,turned
a
corner,and
at
last,there
was
the
check-in
counter!
He
led
me
past
all
the
lines
of
people
and
pushed
my
luggage
to
the
inspection
counter.
When
I
turned
to
thank
him
for
all
his
help,he
was
gone.I
never
got
an
opportunity
to
know
that
kind
man’s
name,but
I
would
always
remember
his
unexpected
kindness.He
helped
me
when
I
needed
it
most.Without
his
timely
help,I
would
have
certainly
missed
my
plane,I
can
only
hope
that
one
day
I
will
be
able
to
do
the
same
for
another
traveller
who
is
suffering
through
a
terrible
journey.
