The boy sat on his chair, with his hand above the keyboard. He thought about what to write.
He recalled that the competition deadline was merely a week away. But he still had not even started on his piece. He looked at the brochure again. WRITING COMPETITION! the title read. His mom had encouraged him to enter the writing competition, and now he was taking it on as his personal task for the holidays.
As the boy reflected on his previous writing efforts, he realized how hopeless his task of winning was. Every story he ever wrote was based on other stories. He had little imagination, and unfortunately, imagination was the key to writing.
Suddenly, he had a brainwave. This time, he came up with an original and imaginative story.
The words shot towards him like a storm of leaves. Words were coming easily, flowing through him, faster than he could type. He typed faster than he ever had before. He continued to type, amazed at how easy writing this story was. The boy could not stop writing. He looked at the word count and saw the number 248 staring right back at him. He was not even halfway yet.
Then he heard the call of his mother saying time for bed. He continued writing the piece, ignoring her. He had to make up for the time he had lost thinking about a topic to write.
Finally, he finished. The word count now read 498.
揚erfect, he thought, just under the word limit. He knew this was the story that would win.He went onto Google and searched for the competition. He found the page but there was no 揈nter button.
Confused,he then re-read the page again. It read COMPETITON CLOSED.

Looking through a magazine in a waiting room recently, I came across an article with the title “My top five most precious possessions”.It was just a few lines of text with pictures, but it caught my imagination.
It’s interesting how inanimate(无生命的) objects can take on such significance and become woven into a person’s, and sometimes a whole family’s, life history.
Anyway, the article had me considering what my most precious possessions are.It was difficult to choose only five, but here are mine:
An old cardboard box filled with my children抯 baby photos.
A yellow pocket-sized birthday book of special things (poems, pictures of flowers and trees, etc) given to me by my dad when I was probably about seven or eight years old.
A 21st Birthday card from my mum.In it she抯 written her congratulations, her love, and her hopes for my future. She died not long after, when I was in my early twenties.
A few ancient but very beautiful botany books that were once my great grandmother抯.She was a botanist in a time when it was relatively unusual for women to be qualified in this field and I think she was probably a remarkable and very interesting woman.I’d like to have known her.
A brooch(胸针) left to me by my much-loved grandmother. It was given to my great grandmother (her mother) by my great grandfather on his return from World War Ⅰ.It is not worth anything in terms of money. However, it not only stands for a link between four generations of women, but it is also a reminder of one young man’s return from World War I.
How about you? I’d love to hear what you feel are your most precious possessions.
24.What made the writer have the idea of writing the passage?

D.show a person’s love and respect for his or her relatives

Feeding bread to the ducks is a fond pastime for many of us, reminding us of our happy childhood trips to the local park. But did you know that bread actually poses a danger to birds, as well as the environment? Eating it can cause our feathered friends to develop a condition called Angel Wing, which is when too much bread makes birds feathers grow too quickly. This additional weight puts a strain on their muscles, causing their wings to twist and drop open, and if not treated fast, they can lose the ability to fly.
揂ngel Wing can be爎emedied爄f we reach birds before it has developed too severely, says Caroline Simpson, a trustee of UK charity Swan Lifeline, which has rescued and treated more than 30,000 birds over the last 20 years. “Otherwise the consequence can be awful—such as amputations(截肢)of the wing.” Adult swans can also develop gut and heart disease, so it’s important we do our bit to prevent this by feeding wild birds with the right kind of food.
Bread can also cause harmful changes to the natural ecosystem. Rotting bread at the bottom of rivers and lakes allows bacteria to breed, spreading disease and attracting rats and other vermin to our waterways. It can result in algal(藻类的)blooms and the presence of a mould(霉菌)called Aspergillus too, which has the potential to kill waterfowl(水禽)and other wildlife if it gets into their lungs.
But this doesn’t mean we have to stop fun trips to feed the ducks. Giving birds the right food-like frozen peas, sweetcorn and lettuce leaves-is good for both them and the environment. So, next time you visit your local park, take a healthier alternative with you and do your bit to protect our precious wildlife.
28.The underlined word remedied in Paragraph 2 probably means牋.
A.reduced B.expected C.caused D.corrected
29.Which of the following is NOT a consequence of feeding waterfowl with bread?
A.Harmful creatures will be drawn to waterways.
B.Water birds will be overfed and risk losing their bodily functions.
C.The water will be enriched thanks to the nutrients in bread.
D.The eco-balance at the bottom of rivers or lakes will be disturbed.
30.The purpose of writing this passage is to牋.
A.stop people from feeding waterfowl.
B.instruct people how to raise waterfowl.
C.warn people of the danger threatening waterfowl.
D.promote a safe and healthy way to feed waterfowl.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Most of us long for relationships in which we are loved and accepted. Our hearts’ desire is to give and receive love in relationships that make us feel that even if others disagree with what we do or say, they still love us, accept us, and appreciate what we give to the world. While it would be wonderful to have these types of relationships with all people, we know that抯 hard to do. However, we can have such relationships with some others, 31 梐nd, strangely, this is often the hardest relationship of all.
牋 Do you love yourself? You may think you do, but do you really? There抯 only one way to find out by taking a close look at what you think, say, and do. You may not like some of what you find, but if you are serious about really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work. 32 :
Listen Closely to Your Thoughts
牋 Your thoughts will determine your actions. 33 . It is not necessary for you to write in it every day, but it helps to record various insights you gain as you go about your life. Instead of using a big notebook, you might use a small notepad that you can keep in your pocket for easy access to record your thoughts as they occur to you. Whichever method you choose, what抯 most important is that you write your thoughts down. It will help you know what抯 in your heart.
34 牋
To do this, you should pay attention to your actions. Actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth. If you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more reliable? On the other hand, if you say you抮e not good at a certain job, but your actions say otherwise, that抯 also important. What do you do with this insight?燳ou can use it to make more positive choices in your life. By being honest with yourself, you will act according to truth instead of just what you tell yourself.
Take Quiet Time to Listen to Your Inner Voice
牋 This is similar to the first point, but it takes a step further beyond the natural mind to the heart that cannot be seen. You may want to use your quiet time to think deeply. However you use this time, 35 . Breathing deeply during quiet time will also help you focus. I know it抯 hard to find quiet time during a particularly busy day, but it抯 so important even if it抯 just 10 minutes a day and you have to hide somewhere to get it. Quiet time can really make a difference in your life.
牋 Despite what your mind may be telling you, you can have love with no limits. The key is to unconditionally love yourself first.
One thing helping you to listen to your thoughts is keeping a journal
the time shouldn抰 be too long
C . the key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself
Here are three ways for gaining greater personal insight for deeper love
but only when we first have them with ourselves
Be Honest with Yourself
it is difficult to keep relationships with people around you.
