Mathematician’s
Apology
by
G.H.
Hardy
This
is
the
best
book
I
know
about
the
sheer
beauty
of
mathematics.
Here’s
one
lovely
quote
from
the
book:
“A
mathematician,
like
a
painter
or
a
poet,
is
a
maker
of
patterns.
If
his
patterns
are
more
permanent
than
theirs,
it
is
because
they
are
made
with
ideas.”

The
Future
by
Nick
Montfort
This
is
a
short
read
but
a
great
look
at
some
key
future
thinkers
throughout
history.
Through
delightfully
written
case
studies,
Montfort
makes
the
argument
that
the
future
can
be
made
and
not
predicted.
It’s
a
must-read
for
anyone
interested
in
future
studies
and
the
role
that
sci-fi,
speculative
design
and
big
ideas
play
in
shaping
our
future
relationship
with
technology.

We

how
to

in

and
in

Madson

a
wonderful

by
Brenda
Ueland
For
those
who
know
they
have
something
to
express,
these
stressful
times
can
feel
a
bit
hopeless—it
may
seem
impossible
to
find
the
time,
skill

energy
to
create.
This
is
one
of
the
most
timeless

on
how
to

and
it’s
also
a
delightful

in

itself.

The
adolescent
girl
from
Tennessee
was
standing
on
the
stage
of
a
drama
summer
camp
in
New
York.
It
was
a
beautiful
day.
But
the
girl
didn’t
feel
beautiful.
She
was
not
the
leggy,
attractive
Hollywood
type.
In
fact,
she
described
herself
as
stupid.
Her
name
is
Reese
Witherspoon.
Since
Reese
Witherspoon
was
six
years
old,
she
had
admired
and
respected
Dolly
Parton,
who
was
a
famous
country
singer.
For
three
years
she
had
gone
all
out
to
act,
dance
and
sing,
fancying
that
she
could
be
another
Dolly
Parton.
However,
at
the
end
of
the
camp
her
coaches
told
her
to
forget
about
singing.
They
suggested
she
think
about
another
career.
She
took
their
words
to
heart.
After
all,
why
shouldn’t
she
believe
the
professionals?
But
back
at
home
in
Nashville,
her
mother—a
funny,
happy,
optimistic
woman—wouldn’t
let
her
feel
depressed.
Her
father,
a
physician,
encouraged
her
to
achieve
in
school.
So
she
worked
hard
at
everything
and
was
accepted
at
Stanford
University.
And
at
19,
she
got
a
part
in
a
low-budget
movie
called
Freeway,
which
prepared
for
her
role
in
the
movie
Pleasantville.
But
her
big
break
came
with
Legally
Blonde.
“If
you
can’t
sing
and
you
aren’t
charming,
play
to
your
strengths.
If
you’re
going
to
make
it
in
this
business,
better
focus
on
what
you’re
good
at,”
she
told
the
interviewer
later.
And
then
came
the
offer
that
took
her
back
to
her
Nashville—playing
the
wife
of
country
star
Johnny
Cash,
a
singing
role.
All
of
a
sudden
the
old
fears
learned
on
that
summer
stage
were
back.
She
was
so
nervous
on
the
stage.
But
she
didn’t
give
up
on
the
movie
or
herself.
She
spent
6
months
taking
singing
lessons
again.
She
learned
to
play
the
autoharp.
And
the
hard
work
built
up
her
confidence.
Last
March,
Reese
Witherspoon
walked
up
on
another
stage,
the
Kodak
Theatre
in
Hollywood,
and
accepted
the
Academy
Award
for
Best
Actress
for
her
heartbreaking,
heartwarming
singing
role
as
June
Carter
Cash
in
Walk
the
Line.

C
If
you
grew
up
in
a
household
that
had
its
fair
share
of
bookshelves,
it
might
say
something
positive
about
your
personality
now
that
you’re
all
grown-up.
This
new
study
found
that
people
who
grew
up
in
book-filled
homes
have
higher
reading,
maths,
and
technological
skills.
The
researchers
analysed
data
featuring
160,000
adults
(aged
25
to
65)
across
31
nations.
All
participants
were
asked
how
many
books
there
were
in
their
homes
when
they
were
16
years
old.
They
chose
from
a
series
of
alternatives
ranging
from
“10
or
less”
to
“more
than
500”.
If
a
household
held
at
least
80
books,
then
participants
went
on
to
display
the
average
rate
of
literacy
and
numeracy(读写和计算能力).
The
rate
of
literacy
continued
to
increase
in
parallel
to
the
number
of
books
a
household
contained
until
the
rate
didn’t
increase
from
350
books
onwards.
Furthermore,
young
teenagers
who
grew
up
around
books
were
shown
to
have
the
same
levels
of
literacy
and
numeracy
as
university
graduates
who
had
only
grown
up
around
a
few
books.
Literacy
was
clarified
as
“the
ability
to
read
effectively
to
participate
in
society
and
achieve
personal
goals”.
Participants
took
tests
that
“captured
a
range
of
basics
through
advanced
comprehension
skills,
from
reading
brief
texts
for
a
single
piece
of
information
to
synthesizing
information
from
complex
texts”.
Numeracy
tests
measured
the
“ability
to
use
mathematical
concepts
in
everyday
life”,
while
IT-related
tests
“assessed
the
ability
to
use
digital
technology
to
communicate
with
others,
as
well
as
to
gather,
analyse,
and
synthesize
information”.
The
results
suggest
those
books
made
a
long-term
difference.
“Growing
up
with
home
libraries
improves
adult
skills
in
these
areas
beyond
the
benefits
from
parental
education
or
one’s
own
educational
attainment,”
the
researchers
report.
Not
surprisingly,
the
biggest
effect
was
on
reading
ability.
“The
total
effects
of
home
library
size
on
literacy
are
large
everywhere,”
the
researchers
report.
( )8.What
can
we
learn
from
the
new
study?
A.Homes
filled
with
books
do
much
benefit
to
one’s
growth.
B.One’s
literacy
and
numeracy
are
finally
shaped
at
the
age
of
16.
C.All
participants
need
to
have
ten
to
more
than
500
books
at
home.
D.Those
reading
a
lot
are
more
competent
than
university
graduates.
( )9.What
is
Paragraph
4
mainly
about?
A.The
benefit
of
literacy,
numeracy
and
IT
ability.
B.The
measurement
of
literacy,
numeracy
and
IT
ability.
C.The
relation
between
literacy,
numeracy
and
IT
ability.
D.The
difference
between
literacy,
numeracy
and
IT
ability.
( )10.According
to
the
text,
books
influence
one’s
most.?
A.parental
education
B.educational
attainment
C.calculating
ability
D.reading
ability
( )11.What
is
the
writer’s
purpose
in
writing
the
text?
A.To
describe
the
importance
of
receiving
good
education.
B.To
clarify
the
effect
of
home
library
size
on
one’s
adult
skills.
C.To
explain
the
necessity
of
acquiring
literacy
and
numeracy.
D.To
introduce
methods
of
improving
one’s
literacy
and
numeracy.

A
good
way
to
look
at
failure
straight
in
the
face
is
by
writing
a
failure
résumé(简历)
or
CV.
Like
social
media,
there,
we
usually
only
see
our
friends’
“highlight
part”.
When
we
look
at
others’
résumés,
we
get
scared
and
think
how
ours
doesn’t
measure
up.
But
even
the
most
accomplished
people
have
plenty
of
failure
behind
them—we
just
don’t
see
it.
Stefan
felt
this
deeply
as
a
scientist,
so
she
wrote
a
different
CV
which
of
course
boasted
(夸耀)
about
her
good
grades,PhD,and
published
papers.
But
the
way
she
deals
with
her
failure
CV
is
a
model
of
what
we
could
all
do.
“My
CV
does
not
reflect
my
great
academic
efforts—it
does
not
mention
the
exams
I
failed,my
unsuccessful
PhD
or
scholarship
applications,
or
the
papers
never
accepted
for
publication.
During
the
interviews,I
talk
about
the
one
project
that
worked,not
about
the
many
that
failed,”
writes
Stefan
in
a
column
for
.
Stefan
suggests
keeping
a
draft
on
which
you
log,
casually
but
regularly,
every
unsuccessful
application,
refused
grant
proposal
and
rejected
paper.
And
that’s
the
point:not
to
consider
what
we
got
wrong,but
to
use
that
information
to
both
look
at
failure
and
realize
it’s
really
okay,
and
also
to
use
our
failures
for
another
purpose:
as
learning
tools.
The
point
is
to
be
real—with
ourselves
and
about
how
the
world
works.
Being
real
means
taking
an
honest,
critical,
but
also
kind
look
at
what
we
didn’t
get
right,and
then
doing
our
best
to
change
what
we
can.
Instead
of
focusing
on
how
that
failure
makes
you
feel,
take
the
time
to
step
back
and
analyse
the
practical,
operational
reasons
that
you
failed.
So,
practise
being
okay
with
failure,
and
turning
your
failures
into
lessons
learned.
And
yes,sometimes
we
have
to
learn
those
lessons
more
than
once,
letting
go
of
what
you
can’t
change.
And
keep
moving
forward
to
success.
( )12.What
does
the
underlined
word
“it”
in
the
first
paragraph
refer
to?
A.Plenty
of
failure.
B.A
failure
résumé.
C.Highlight
part.
D.Social
media.
( )13.What
does
Stefan
intend
to
tell
us
in
Paragraph
3?
A.All
her
failures
in
her
career.
B.Benefits
she
got
from
her
failures.
C.The
content
of
her
own
résumé.
D.The
difference
between
her
résumé
and
others’.
( )14.What
does
Stefan
advise
us
to
do
in
our
careers?
A.Regard
failure
as
part
of
our
life.
B.Keep
a
record
of
our
failures.
C.Value
our
achievements.
D.Long
for
failure.
( )15.Which
of
the
following
best
describes
the
author’s
opinion?
A.No
pain,
no
gain.
B.All
roads
lead
to
Rome.
C.Where
there
is
a
will,there
is
a
way.
D.Failure
is

Youngsters
usually
benefit
from
having
a
relationship
with
someone
older
and
wiser
to
mentor(指导)
them.
The
mentor
might
be
a
teacher,
family
member
or
more
experienced
peer.
However,
not
everyone
is
suitable
to
be
an
influential,
positive
role
model.16. Here
are
some
common
characteristics
of
good
role
models.?
They
are
confident.
Most
people
admire
those
who
have
much
confidence
in
themselves.17. So
they
are
able
to
acknowledge
their
skills
and
achievements
without
becoming
arrogant
(自大的).
Just
as
child
development
specialist
Dr
Robyn
Silverman
suggests,
healthy
self-confidence
shows
as
pride
in
who
you
are
and
what
you’ve
learned
throughout
your
life.?
18.
Role
models
show
their
commitment
to
a
desired
goal
by
their
actions
and
are
willing
to
invest
the
necessary
time
and
effort
to
achieve
success.
They
don’t
give
up
easily
and
continue
trying
when
faced
with
challenges.
Their
determination
to
succeed
encourages
youngsters
to
follow
through
and
reach
the
goals
they
set
for
themselves.?
They
are
respectful.19. Young
people
appreciate
being
treated
with
respect
and
admire
those
who
treat
them
and
others
that
way.
Role
models
who
show
selflessness
and
an
equal,
non-prejudiced
view
of
those
different
from
them
earn
the
admiration
of
others.?
They
are
optimistic
and
creative.
Role
models
inspire
others
with
a
positive
outlook
on
life.
For
example,
a
community
leader
faced
with
a
financial
setback(挫折)
might
welcome
the
opportunity
to
organize
a
fund-raising
project
that
pulls
everyone
together
in
a
constructive
manner.20. ?
A.They
are
hard-working.
B.They
are
knowledgeable.
C.Role
models
show
respect
for
others.
D.Pick
someone
having
the
same
hobbies
and
similar
qualities
as
you.
E.Good
role
models
have
a
healthy
appreciation
of
their
accomplishments.
F.Effective
role
models
possess
desirable
characteristics
that
make
them
easy
to
look
up
to.
G.Role
models
tend
to
see
the
bright
side
in
difficult
situations
and
can
find
creative
solutions.

home.
He
was
out
all

It
was
getting
dark

light
snow
was
coming
down,
so
he
almost
didn’t

the

that
she

He

He

He

Why

As
he

she

said

She

4.B 推理判断题。根据第三段前两句“However,
at
the
end
of
the
camp
her
coaches
told
her
to
forget
about
singing.
They
suggested

about
another
career.”可知夏令营结束时,教练告诉她应该忘掉唱歌这件事,另谋出路。故教练认为她不适合唱歌。故B项正确。
5.D 细节理解题。根据第四段前两句“But
back
at
home
in
Nashville,
her
mother—a
funny,
happy,

Her
father,

encouraged
her

8.A 细节理解题。根据第二段中“This
new
study
found
that
people
who
grew
up
in
book-filled
homes
have
higher
reading,
maths,
and
technological
skills.”可知,这项新研究发现,在书堆里长大的人具有更高的阅读、数学和技术技能。由此可知,新研究表明充满书籍的家庭对一个人的成长有很大的好处。故选A。
9.B 段落大意题。根据第四段中“Literacy
was
clarified
as
‘the
ability
to
read
effectively
to
participate
in
society
and
achieve
personal
goals’.”(读写能力被定义为“有效阅读以参与社会和实现个人目标的能力”)以及“Numeracy
tests
measured
the
‘ability
to
use
mathematical
concepts
in
everyday
life’,
while
IT-related
tests
‘assessed
the
ability
to
use
digital
technology
to
communicate
with
others,
as
well
as
to
gather,
analyse,
and
synthesize
information’.”(计算能力测试指的是“在日常生活中使用数学概念的能力”,而与IT相关的测试则是“评估使用数字技术与他人交流的能力,以及收集、分析和综合信息的能力”)可知,第四段主要讲了读写、计算和IT能力的衡量标准。故选B。
10.D 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Not
surprisingly,
the
biggest
effect
was
on
reading
ability.”可知,不出意料,影响最大的是阅读能力。由此可知,书对人的阅读能力的影响最大。故选D。

size
on
literacy

【文章大意】
本文是一篇议论文。即使是最有成就的人,背后也有很多失败——我们只是没有看到它。那么我们如何看待失败呢?作者从失败的简历开始,告诉读者不应考虑我们错了什么,而应正确看待失败,把我们的失败用作学习的工具,分析失败的原因,保持好的态度,把失败变成经验教训,继续前进,走向成功。
12.A 代词指代题。根据上文“…even
the
most
accomplished
people
have
plenty
of
failure
behind
them…”可知,即使是最有成就的人,背后也经历了很多失败。分析句子可知,破折号是对上文的解释说明,画线词所在句说的是“我们只是看不到它”,因此推断it指代上文提到的plenty
of
failure。故选A。
13.C 推理判断题。根据第三段“‘My
CV
does
not
reflect
my
great
academic
efforts—it
does
not
mention
the
exams
I
failed,my
unsuccessful
PhD
or
scholarship
applications,or
the
papers
never
accepted
for
publication.
During
the
interviews,I
talk
about
the
one
project
that
worked,not
about
the
many
that
failed,’
writes
Stefan
in
a
column
for
.”可知,本段讲述的是:“我”的简历没有反映“我”在学术上的巨大努力——它没有提到“我”不及格的考试,“我”不成功的博士或奖学金申请,或者从未被接受出版的论文。在面试中,“我”谈到一个有效的项目,而不是许多失败的项目。因此可知,Stefan的目的是告诉我们她的简历的内容。故选C。
14.B 细节理解题。根据第四段的“Stefan
suggests
keeping
a
draft
on
which
you
log,
casually
but
regularly,
every
unsuccessful
application,
refused
grant
proposal
and
rejected
paper.”可知,Stefan建议保留一份你可以随意但定期记录的草稿,上面写着你的每一个不成功的申请、被拒绝了的资助申请书以及被拒绝的论文。这些都是我们失败的记录。故选B。
15.D 推理判断题。根据最后一段“So,
practise
being
okay
with
failure,
and
turning
your
failures
into
lessons
learned.
And
yes,
sometimes
we
have
to
learn
those
lessons
more
than
once,
letting
go
of
what
you
can’t
change.
And
keep
moving
forward
to
success.”可知,对失败要保持好的态度,把你的失败变成经验教训。有时我们必须不止一次地吸取这些经验教训,放弃你无法改变的东西,继续前进,走向成功。因此可推断,作者认为失败是成功之母。故选D。

After
the
lady
finished
her
meal,
she
paid
with
a
one-hundred-dollar
bill.
The
waitress
quickly
went
to
get
change
for
her
hundred-dollar
bill,
but
the
old
lady
had
driven
off.
She
was
gone
by
the
time
the
waitress
came
back.
The
waitress
wondered
why
the
lady
did
so.
Then
she
noticed
something
written
on
a
napkin.
There
were
tears
in
her
eyes
when
she
read
what
the
lady
wrote:“You
don’t
owe
me
anything.
I
have
been
there
too.
Somebody
once
helped
me
out
the
way
I’m
helping
you.
If
you
really
want
to
pay
me
back,
here
is
what
you
do:
do
not
let
this
chain
of
love
end
with
you.”
Under
the
napkin
were
four
more
hundred-dollar
bills.
That
night
when
the
waitress
got
home
from
work,
she
was
thinking
about
the
money
and
what
the
lady
had
written.
She
was
wondering
how
the
lady
knew
she
and
her
husband
were
in
need.
With
the
baby
to
be
born
next
month,
life
was
going
to
be
hard.
She
knew
how
worried
her
husband
was,
and
now
everything
was
going
to
be
all
right.
Knowing
what
had
happened,
her
husband,
Bryan,
shed
tears
of
joy
and
gratitude.
