Flying
High
Barrington
Irving
made
his
historic
flight
and
founded
an
educational
non-profit-making
organization.His
message
for
kids:“The
only
thing
that
separates
you
from
scientists
is
determination,hard
work
and
a
strong
liking
for
what
you
want
to
achieve.”
The
secret,he
believes,is
having
a
dream
in
the
first
place,and
that
starts
with
learning
experiences
that
inspire
kids
to
build
careers.
The
moment
of
inspiration
for
Irving
came
at
the
age
of
15
in
his
parents’
bookstore.One
customer,a
professional
pilot,asked
Irving
if
he’d
thought
about
becoming
a
pilot.“I
told
him
I
didn’t
think
I
was
smart
enough;but
the
next
day
he
took
me
to
the
cockpit(驾驶舱)
of
the
commercial
airplane
he
flew,and
just
like
that
I
was
hooked.”
To
follow
his
dream,Irving
turned
down
a
football
scholarship
to
the
University
of
Florida.He
washed
airplanes
to
earn
money
for
a
flight
school
and
increased
his
flying
skills
by
practising
at
home
on
a
$40
flight
simulator(模拟器)
video
game.Then
another
dream
took
hold:flying
alone
around
the
world.He
faced
more
than
50
rejections
for
sponsorship
before
convincing
some
companies
to
donate
aircraft
components.He
took
off
with
no
weather
radar,no
de-icing
system,and
just
$30
in
his
pocket.“I
like
to
do
things
people
say
I
can’t
do.”
After
97
days,26
stops
and
dozens
of
thunderstorms,he
touched
down
to
a
cheering
crowd
in
Miami.“It
was
seeing
so
many
young
people
watching
and
listening
that
pushed
me
into
giving
back
with
my
knowledge
and
experience.”
Irving
has
been
doing
it
ever
since.He
set
up
his
non-profit-making
organization,Experience
Aviation(航空),aiming
to
increase
the
numbers
of
youth
in
aviation
and
science-related
careers.Kids
attend
programmes
dealing
with
hands-on
robotics
projects
and
flight
simulator
challenges.
“We
want
to
create
chances
for
students
to
accomplish
something
amazing,”
he
notes.Perhaps
Irving’s
most
powerful
educational
tool
is
the
example
his
own
life
provides.After
landing
his
record-breaking
flight
at
age
23,he
said,“Everyone
told
me
I
was
so
young
that
I
didn’t
have
enough
experience,strength,or
knowledge.They
told
me
it
would
take
forever
and
I’d
never
come
home.Well...guess
what?”

was
finally
given
enough
money

keep
going.
C.He
got
the

his
video
game.
D.He
took
on
a

after
he
knew
how
to
fly.

Irving
set
up
his
non-profit-making
organization?

people
were
interested
in
what
he

thought
he
could
teach
more

flight
schools
could
do.
(B)
We
are
the
products
of
evolution,and
not
just
evolution
that
occurred
billions
of
years
ago.As
scientists
look
deeper
into
our
genes(基因),they
are
finding
examples
of
human
evolution
in
just
the
past
few
thousand
years.People
in
Ethiopian
highlands
have
adapted
to
living
at
high
altitudes.Cattle-raising
people
in
East
Africa
and
northern
Europe
have
gained
a
mutation(突变)
that
helps
them
digest
milk
as
adults.
On
Thursday
in
an
article
published
in
Cell,a
team
of
researchers
reported
a
new
kind
of
adaptation—not
to
air
or
to
food,but
to
the
ocean.A
group
of
sea-dwelling
people
in
Southeast
Asia
have
evolved
into
better
divers.The
Bajau,as
these
people
are
known,number
in
the
hundreds
of
thousands
in
Indonesia,Malaysia
and
the
Philippines.They
have
traditionally
lived
on
houseboats;in
recent
times,they’ve
also
built
houses
on
stilts(支柱)
in
coastal
waters.“They
are
simply
a
stranger
to
the
land,”said
Rodney
C.Jubilado,a
University
of
Hawaii
researcher
who
studies
the
Bajau.
Dr.
Jubilado
first
met
the
Bajau
while
growing
up
on
Samal
Island
in
the
Philippines.They
made
a
living
as
divers,spearfishing
or
harvesting
shellfish.“We
were
so
amazed
that
they
could
stay
underwater
much
longer
than
us
local
islanders,”Dr.
Jubilado
said.“I
could
see
them
actually
walking
under
the
sea.”
In
2015,Melissa
Ilardo,then
a
graduate
student
in
genetics
at
the
University
of
Copenhagen,heard
about
the
Bajau.She
wondered
if
centuries
of
diving
could
have
led
to
the
evolution
of
physical
characteristics
that
made
the
task
easier
for
them.“It
seemed
like
the
perfect
chance
for
natural
selection
to
act
on
a
population,”said
Dr.
Ilardo.She
also
said
there
were
likely
a
number
of
other
genes
that
help
the
Bajau
dive.

Where
do
hurricane
names
come
from?
Why
do
we
give
human
names
to
violent,
mindless
masses
of
water
and
wind?
And
how
do
we
all
agree
which
name
to
use?
Before
the
1940s,
only
the
worst
storms
were
given
names.
1.There
was
the
Sea
Islands
Hurricane
of
1893,
the
Great
Galveston
Hurricane
of
1900
and
the
Labor
Day
Hurricane
of
1935
to
name
a
few.
The
practice
of
using
more
memorable
names
didn't
begin
until
1950.
It
was
when
Atlantic
tropical
hurricanes
received
official
names,
although
they
still
weren't
human
ones.
2.
So
the
1950
season
featured
such
strangely
named
storms
as
Hurricane
Dog,
Hurricane
Easy
and
Hurricane
Love.
3.
The
same
list
of
names
was
recycled
every
year,
so
the
1950-1952
seasons
each
featured
a
Hurricane
Able
through
at
least
Hurricane
Fox.
That
became
confusing,
so
in
1953
the
U.S.
National
Hurricane
Center
began
using
female
human
names,
which
proved
far
more
successful.
Not
only
did
it
make
storm
identification
easier,
but
it
helped
authorities
and
news
outlets
spread
warnings.
4.
The
first
hurricane
names
were
often
inspired
by
forecasters'
wives,
but
in
1979
men's
names
were
added
to
the
mix
The
World
Meteorological
Organization
now
monitors
the
master
list
of
names,
which
alternates
between
male
and
females
six
lists
are
rotated
annually
in
the
Atlantic.so
the
2015
names
will
be
used
again
in
2021.
5.
Seventy-eight
Atlantic
hurricane
names
have
been
retired
since
1954,
including
29
since
2000.
A.Besides,
it
helped
the
public
pay
attention
to
them.
B.These
names
were
chosen
from
some
familiar
words.
C.This
naming
rule,
however,
had
an
obvious
weakness.
D.These
names
of
retired
hurricanes
are
silly
or
unreasonable.
E.But
when
a
hurricane
is
bad
enough,
its
name
can
be
retired.
F.They
were
usually
based
on
the
place
or
time
of
year
they
made
landfall.
G.It
is
also
easier
to
use
names
when
we
have
more
than
one
storm
to
track.

On
June
9,
1870,
Charles
Dickens
died
at
the
age
of
58.
The
next
day,
a
headline
in
The
New
York
Times
read:
"Death
of
the
Great
Novelist

Mourned
by
the
People
of
Two
Continents."
1.
Even
today,
the
British
novelist
is
loved
by
readers
all
over
the
world.
Dickens
created
some
of
the
most
unforgettable
characters
in
English
literature.
You
must
have
heard
of
or
even
read
some
of
his
novels:
Oliver
Twist,
A
Christmas
Carol
and
A
Tale
of
Two
Cities.2.
Since
1897,
there
have
been
more
than
300
film
and
television
adaptations
of
Dickens'
works.
Natalie
McKnight
is
a
literature
professor
who
studies
Dickens
and
his
works.3.
One
important
reason,
she
says,
is
that
Dickens
wrote
from
his
heart.
He
tried
hard
to
produce
emotional
effects
among
his
readers.
A
Christmas
Carol,
for
example,
was
written
to
make
every
reader
think
about
how
they
could
make
a
difference
to
their
society.
People
always
enjoy
works
that
make
them
laugh
out
loud,
cry
and
think.
Many
other
19th
century
novelists
wrote
entertaining
works.4.
Dickens
wrote
about
situations
and
emotions
that
still
interest
people
today.
He
used
his
pen
to
fight
social
inequality
and
gave
voice
to
the
poor.5.
This
coming
June
marks
the
150th
year
of
Dickens'
death.
It's
another
chance
to
remember
this
great
writer.
Will
you
read
(or
re-read)
some
of
his
most
famous
works?
A.Dickens'
novels
have
enriched
English
literature.
B.A
Tale
of
Two
Cities
has
sold
more
than
200
million
copies.
C.His
works
led
to
many
important
social
changes.
D.However,
few
of
them
worked
as
hard
as
Dickens
to
attract
readers'
minds.
E.The
headline
was
not
overstating
the
fame
of
Dickens.
F.Their
works
became
the
best
sellers
of
that
time.
G.She
explains
why
the
novelist
has
remained
so
popular.

1.C根据文章第一段最后一句“The
secret,he
believes,is
having
a
dream
in
the
first
place,and
that
starts
with
learning
experiences
that
inspire
kids
to
build
careers.”可知,Irving认为最重要的是首先要有梦想,也就是首先你要有自己迫切想要完成的具体事情。
2.B 根据第二段第三句可知,Irving告诉对方自己可能不够聪明,说明他怀疑自己的能力。
3.D 根据第三段第三句“Then
another
dream
took
hold:flying
alone
around
the
world.”可知,在学会飞行以后,他有了另外一个梦想:独自飞越全球。
4.C 根据第四段第二句“It
was
seeing
so
many
young
people
watching
and
listening
that
pushed
me
into
giving
back
with
my
knowledge
and
experience.”可知,促使他建立这个公益组织的是他看到了很多年轻人都对他做的事情感兴趣。
(B)
1.B 第一段讲到人类是进化的产物。不过随着科学家对基因的深入研究,他们发现了人类在过去几千年里进化的例子。据此可知,这里是要介绍关于人类进化的新知识。故选B项。
2.D 根据第二段中的“They
have
traditionally
lived
on
houseboats;
in
recent
times,they’ve
also
built
houses
on
stilts
in
coastal
waters.”可知,传统上,巴夭人住在船屋上;不过最近他们还在沿海水域的支柱上建造了房屋。故选D项。
3.C 根据第三段中的“We
were
so
amazed
that
they
could
stay
underwater
much
longer
than
us
local
islanders...”可知,令Jubilado感到惊讶的是,巴夭人居然在水下停留的时间比当地岛民还要长。故选C项。
4.A 文章主要讲述了居住在海上的巴夭人由于生活环境特殊而进化,故A项“为(适应)海上生活而重新塑造的躯体”适合做标题。
(A)
1.由下一句“1893年的海岛飓风,1900年的加尔维斯顿大飓风和1935年的劳动节飓风等等。”可知,这些飓风都是根据时间地点来命名的,承接下文,F选项“它们通常是根据它们一年中登陆的地点或时间来确定的。”切题。故选F项。
2.由上两句“使用更容易记住的名字的做法直到1950年才开始。那是大西洋热带飓风正式命名的时候,尽管它们还不是人类的名字。”和下一句“所以1950年的季节有这样奇怪的命名风暴,如飓风狗,飓风易和飓风爱。”可知,飓风狗,飓风易和飓风爱(Dog、Easy和Love很熟悉常见)都是选用熟悉的词命名的,承接上下文,B选项“这些名字是从一些熟悉的词中选出来的。”切题。故选B项。
3.由下三句“每年都会重复使用相同的名称列表,所以1950-1952年的每一季都至少有一次飓风能和飓风福克斯。这让人很困惑,因此1953年美国国家飓风中心开始使用女性人名,这一做法被证明是成功的。它不仅使风暴识别更加容易,而且帮助当局和新闻机构传播警报。”可知,选用熟悉的词给飓风命名,会产生有“许多相同名字飓风”的弱点,这让人们很困惑,这不利于识别飓风和发出警报,所以才出现了用女性人名命名的方式(有利于识别飓风和发出警报),承接下文,C选项“然而,这个命名规则有一个明显的弱点。”切题。故选C项。
4.由上一句“它不仅使风暴识别更加容易,而且帮助当局和新闻机构传播警报。”可知,上下两句讲飓风用女性人名命名的好处,上下两句是顺承递进关系,承接上文,A选项“此外,它也有助于公众对它们的关注。”切题。故选A项。
5.由下一句“自1954年以来,已有78个大西洋飓风名称被注销,其中29个是2000年以来的。”可知,承接下文,E选项“但是当飓风够糟糕的时候,它的名字可以注销。”切题;该选项中的retired对应下文的retired,同词复现。故选E项。
(B)
16.根据上文The
next
day,
a
headline
in
The
New

Times
read:
"Death

Mourned
by
the
People

headline与上文a
headline
in
The
New
York
Times
对应,E项:The
headline
was
not
overstating
the
fame
of
Dickens.(标题并没有夸大狄更斯的名气。)符合语境。故选E。
17.根据上文You
must
have
heard
of
or
even
read
some
of
his
novels:
Oliver
Twist,
A
Christmas
Carol
and
A
Tale
of
Two
Cities.(你一定听说过甚至读过他的一些小说:《雾都孤儿》、《圣诞颂歌》和《双城记》。)可知,B项中的A
Tale
of
Two
Cities与上文对应,进一步介绍狄更斯的著作受欢迎。B项:A
Tale
of
Two
Cities
has
sold
more
than
200
million
copies.(《双城记》销量超过2亿本。)符合语境。故选B。
18.根据下文One
important
reason,
she
says,
is
that
Dickens
wrote
from
his
