(B)
Everybody,at
some
point
in
their
lives,has
experienced
failure.It
could
be
something
as
simple
as
not
getting
the
job
you
wanted,or
getting
fewer
marks
even
after
hard
work.But
what
makes
you
is
not
your
failure,but
how
you
get
back
up
after
being
hit.
Once,a
young
school
boy
was
caught
in
a
fire
accident
in
his
school
and
it
was
assumed
that
he
would
not
live.His
mother
was
told
that
he
was
sure
to
die,for
the
terrible
fire
had
destroyed
the
lower
half
of
his
body.Even
if
he
were
to
survive,he
would
be
lame
throughout
his
life.
But
the
brave
boy
did
not
want
to
die
nor
did
he
want
to
be
lame.Much
to
the
amazement
of
the
doctor,he
did
survive.But
unfortunately
from
his
waist
down,he
had
no
motor
ability.His
thin
legs
just
hung
there,lifeless.Eventually
he
left
the
hospital.But
his
determination
to
walk
was
unshakable.At
home,when
he
was
not
in
bed,he
had
to
stay
in
a
wheelchair.One
day,he
threw
himself
from
the
chair
and
pulled
himself
across
the
grass,dragging
his
legs
behind
him.He
reached
the
fence,raised
himself
up
and
then
began
dragging
himself
along
the
fence,firmly
determined.He
did
this
every
day,with
faith
in
himself
that
he
would
be
able
to
walk
unaided.With
his
iron
determination,he
did
develop
the
ability
to
stand
up,then
to
walk
on
and
off,then
to
walk
by
himself
and
then
to
run.
He
began
to
walk
to
school,and
then
run
to
school,to
run
for
the
joy
of
running.Later
in
college
he
was
on
the
track
team.
In
February
1934,in
New
York
City’s
Madison
Square
Garden,this
young
man
who
was
not
expected
to
survive,who
would
surely
never
walk,who
could
never
hope
to
run—this
determined
young
man,Dr.Glenn
Cunningham,ran
the
world’s
fastest
mile.
A
good
example
of
the
power
of
positive
thinking
and
faith
in
one’s
self,Glenn
Cunningham
continues
to
be
an
inspiration
for
many,and
his
story,a
brilliant
evidence
to
how
one
can
bounce
back
even
when
all
difficulties
are
piled
against
one,to
the
degree
that
death
seemed
the
preferable
option.
1.What

C.Arouse

interest.
D.Function
as
a
brief
introduction.
2.What
was
the
doctor’s
opinion
about
Glenn?
A.Glenn
was
able
to
walk
with
his
own
great
effort.
B.Great
determination
could
make
a
difference
to
Glenn.
C.There
was

Is
it
true
that
British
people
have
a
different
sense
of
humor
than
people
in
other
countries?
Let’s
have
a
look
at
what
we
laugh
at
in
Britain.
1.
It’s
not
just
politicians
who
make
us
laugh,
but
anyone
whose
job
is
to
tell
other
people
what
to
do
and
who
takes
themselves
too
seriously.
We
laugh
at
authority,
but
also
sympathetically
laugh
with
anyone
who
we
think
is
treated
badly.
2.
Our
clowns
are
often
silly
people
doing
silly
things—Mr
Bean,
for
example—while
in
America,
they
are
often
clever
people
doing
clever
things
and
winning.
The
fact
that
we
laugh
when
other
people
might
feel
hopeless
is
one
of
the
oddest
things
to
appreciate
about
British
humor.
We
do
have
a
strong
sense
of
irony
(反讽).
“Not
very
pleasant,”
we
might
say
after
some
terrible
experience.
3.
“It’s
a
bit
windy
today”
we
might
say
in
the
middle
of
a
typhoon,
or
“There’s
a
slight
problem,”
when
something
has
gone
very
seriously
wrong.4.
Another
thing
that
can
make
it
difficult
to
understand
British
humor
is
that
we
don’t
always
laugh
or
even
smile
when
we
say
something
funny.
5.
Do
you
think
the
British
sense
of
humor
is
unique?
A.In
addition,we
tend
to
play
things
down.
B.We
often
keep
a
straight
face
even
when
we’re
making
a
joke.
C.Culture
plays
a
big
part
in
how
funny
you
may
find
something.
D.We
know
they
can’
t
win,but
if
they
do
so
sometimes,it’s
even
funnier.
E.Brits
don’t
express
extreme
feelings;we
just“keep
calm
and
carry
on”.
F.Brits
turn
to
laughter
as
a
form
of
medicine
when
life
knocks
them
down.
G.To
the
British,powerful
and
important
people
are
often
sources
of
laughter.

Leadership
lessons
from
Singapore
The
COVID-19
outbreak
is
causing
alarm
around
the
world,
but
here
in
Singapore,
the
small
island
country
has
managed
to
mostly
contain
the
spread
quite
rapidly.
1.
Learning
from
the
past
--
ready
for
the
future.
“Here
is
your
key
card,
office
key
and
personal
thermometer,”
said
the
university
administrator
when
I
started
teaching
many
years
ago.
I
was
puzzled
with
the
thermometer
as
a
standard-issue
device
for
every
employee.
2.
Since
I
was
not
here
during
the
2003
SARS
outbreak,
I
never
appreciated
the
importance
of
having
a
thermometer
in
my
desk
drawer,
but
now
I
use
it
twice
daily.
3.
“Every
instructor
must
complete
the
training
for
delivering
their
courses
online
in
case
of
emergency,”
the
university
told
us
over
seven
years
ago.
It
seemed
a
bit
unnecessary
at
the
time.
But
all
of
us
completed
the
training
--
and
were
retested
each
semester.
Who
would
have
thought
that
in
2020
we
would
need
to
shift
more
than
1,000
courses
online
with
less
than
12
hours'
notice!
That
could
not
have
been
accomplished
without
the
previous
efforts.
Clarifying
expectations
--
universal
diligence.
“Stop
right
there!
Give
me
10
feet
and
then
you
can
come
by,”
says
my
colleague
as
I
meet
her
in
the
common
hallway.
4.
Large
gatherings
are
canceled
and
restaurants
are
empty
as
we
all
spend
more
time
at
home
to
avoid
interactions
with
others.
To
enter
a
mall,
restaurant
or
any
building
on
our
campus,
you
must
pass
a
temperature
screening
and
often
record
your
presence.
5.
In
spite
of
the
global
crisis,
classes
and
university
operations
have
continued
without
disruption.
A.The
virus
is
hard
to
contain.
B.Planning
alternatives
--
the
ability
to
move
quickly.
C.As
a
witness,
I
must
share
a
few
leadership
lessons.
D.The
nation’s
readiness
for
emergencies
helps
to
fight
the
virus.
E.
How
often
do
we
really
take
lessons
from
the
past
to
protect
our
future?
F.
In
fact,
I
once
joked
that
they
should
also
give
us
a
snorkel(水肺)
in
case
of
tsunamis.
G.
We
are
still
friends,
but
it
is
our
responsibility
to
avoid
unnecessary
human
contact.

1.C 根据第一段第三句“But
at
Union
Station
in...,a
board
went
up
with
dollar
bills
attached
to
it
with
pins
and
a
sign
that
read,‘Give
What
You
Can,Take
What
You
Need.’”可知,在这个布告牌上的钱是大家捐献的,其他人可以无条件拿去。由此猜测该句的含义是“无条件提供的钱”,故选C项。
2.B 根据第二段中的“‘People
of
all
ages,races,and
socio-economic
backgrounds
gave
and
took,’
said
Tyler
Bridges
of
The
Toolbox...‘We
even
had
a
bride
in
her
wedding
dress
come
up...’”可推知,Bridges用新娘的例子来说明这项活动吸引了各种各样的人,所以选B项。
3.D 根据第四段第一句“...Bridges
said
the
only
goal
was
to
show
generosity
and
sympathy.”可知D项正确。
(B)
1.D 根据第一段的第一句“Everybody,at
some
point
in
their
lives,has
experienced
failure.”和最后一句“But
what
makes
you
is
not
your
failure,but
how
you
get
back
up
after
being
hit.”可知,第一段的作用是做一个简短的介绍。
2.C 根据第三段的第二句“Much
to
the
amazement
of
the
doctor,he
did
survive.”可知,医生认为这个男孩活下来的概率很小。
3.B 根据最后一段的第一句“A
good
example
of
the
power
of
positive
thinking
and
faith
in
one’s
self,Glenn
Cunningham
continues
to
be
an
inspiration
for
many...”可知,Glenn以他感人的故事激励着人们。
4.B 根据第一段内容可知,让你成功的不是你的失败,而是你如何在被打击后重新站起来,由此可知本文最佳主题是“Stand
up
after
failure”。
(A)
1.根据下文It’s
not
just
politicians
who
make
us
laugh,
but
anyone
whose
job

too
seriously.(让我们发笑的不仅是政客,还有那些以告诉别人该做什么为职责的人以及那些把自己看得太严肃的人)可知这里指出了在英国,哪些人会让人们发笑。该空引出下文,G选项“对英国人来说,有权有势的人物常常是笑料”切题,选项中的powerful
and
important
people对应下文中的politicians,故选G。
2.根据上文We
laugh
at
authority,
but
also
sympathetically
laugh
with
anyone
who

说另一件让我们很难理解英式幽默的事情是,当我们说一些有趣的事情时,我们并不总是笑,甚至不笑。该空承接上文,进一步指出英国人在开玩笑的时候,也经常板着脸,B选项“即使在开玩笑的时候,我们也经常板着脸”切题,选项中straight
face对应上文中的don’t
always
laugh
or
even
smile,故选B。
